Title: lower splitters/ ebay lower splitter
Post by: mk1mad on February 17, 2015, 10:00:36 am
Recently bought a mk5 gti and have noticed the lower splitter is missing. Has anyone fitted the cheaper ebay copy ? Does it fit correctly or am I better off not wasting my money and buying genuine.

The car in not lowered yet, are these easily knocked off?

As with all cheaper eBay body parts, they're usually made from fibre glass and don't always fit correctly without modification, it's a risk really. Personally, I'd go for OEM products only as you know they'll fit and integrate properly with the rest of your body fittings (ie. the under tray).

Some possible upgrades are the ED30 splitter;

Better off looking for a second hand one in good condition as it'll be a little cheaper but may need respraying if not in your colour. Alternatively, have a look at Rieger Tuning (from German);

Made from GRP plastic (like OEM body trim and bumpers) so better quality.

End of the day, you get what you pay for. :happy2:

Thanks that's what I thought.I do prefer  to fit genuine but it seemed little point if it was going to keep getting knocked off. Had the same problem on my mk1! forever loosing front splitters!

Genuine it is then, will take a look at edition splitters as well.

Personally I prefer the shape of the Ed. 30 splitter. I got a good ABS copy from ebay.co.uk of a German shop. It was a sale price of 80 £. Normal price is still less than 100 £.

That store isn't selling anything now. I wonder why? :confused:

At the moment I could only find this replica front splitter but it's in reinforced glass fibre. It's good quality and looks good but it will crack if you hit anything too hard. Link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281000817587 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281000817587)

It's not the same store but it looks identical. :smiley:

I've found the oficial site of that ebay store. Here's the Ed. 30 front splitter: http://www.funtuning.de/product/golf-v/front-bumper-spoiler-30th-for-vw-golf-v-gti.html (http://www.funtuning.de/product/golf-v/front-bumper-spoiler-30th-for-vw-golf-v-gti.html).

As you can read in the description:
"Product is made from ABS plastic.

ABS material was created specifically for use in the automotive industry.
ABS is used in production of factory bumpers and other car body parts.
ABS products are characterized with increased strength and flexibility.

This product has been TUV MATERIALGUTACHTEN certified (TUV certify for material)."

@th3_f15t (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8969): I think OEM body trim and bumpers are made of ABS plastic. It's the replica bumpers and splitters that are made of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP). Just like the link I put previously: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281000817587 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281000817587). You can see in the description: "made of high quality glass fibre reinfordec plastic (...) Not OEM Parts but looks exactly like the OEM Frontlip". :wink:

Let me know how you get on with it, I need to do a few more important jobs before buying splitters.

Yeah, you're right, it is ABS plastic and not GRP. I'm tired and shouldn't write things like this... Apologies.
