been thinking of changing my Alpine header unit to the kenwood dnx525dab but do I have to fit the dab aerial just to listen to normal fm

If you just plug your fm fakra connector in, then you will get fm. I did this for about two weeks until I got a clear weekend to do my DAB aerial!
