Evening fellow MK5ers
I'm looking to replace my discs and pads but I'm not sure what to replace with or where from. There seems to be a whole range from filthy cheap to 'are you sitting comfortably' expensive. What's the best for OEM performance or slightly better???
-
i replaced mine with brembo discs and pads. standard size as oem and oem calipers. when need to replace them again ill go for the s3 setup.

So what kind of cash, if you don't mind me asking is in the Brembo setup you have, and what changes for the S3 setup?
-
cant remember price of top of my head but ill have a look and let you know. i think around 300 ish for front and back but could be wrong.
s3 setup is bigger calipers, bigger disc and pads.

Just had a peek on Ebay. Found a couple of listings for Brembo pads and discs for £100ish for the front. Steer clear???
-
is that just discs or with pads?
ill check now wat i payed.
might want to also look at braided lines. made a nice improvement to braking over oem hoses.
-
cant find the invoice but i remember it was about 300 ish
the ones on ebay seem genuine enough, look like the same ones ive got.
-
Changed mine to brembo front and back pads and discs. Got mine off ebay from quality car parts, £95ish the front and £70ish the rears included discount when you bought the full set. Very helpful with no problems, great stopping power. Genuine VW are a fortune, think I was quoted £75 +vat per disc and the same again for the fronts alone! My local specialist vasstech said they would always reccomend using genuine parts for a quality fit but said the brembo should be just as good. I thought so, don't brembo specialise in brakes???

Cool! Thanks for your advice. Did the brembo stuff improve the braking over the OEM fit? Not sure I'm up for brake lines, not sure how to bleed them after. Nice engine bay!!!

Sounds ideal to me! I'm off to ebay, I may be some time :)

Mtec are highly thought of on ebay for disks
-
i noticed i slight difference but not huge. feel more comfident with them over oem tho. the brakes lines firmed the pedal up and gave abit more response to. definatly feels better over oem.
thanks mate :happy2:0
@SpecialistPhil (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11587) yer ive herd they know there stuff when it comes to brakes :signLOL:

Slightly related - the brembo pads have no wear indicator? Does this just get coded out on vagcom or is there some other way of getting rid of the warning light?
-
i had no issues with it. my pads came with the wear indicator which plugged into the normal socket.
-
Mine had wear indicators as well!
-
Nice! Good to know. I thought the brembo pads had no wear indicators for some reason
-
Also does anyone know how to find out what size discs I have? There seems to be a choice between 212mm and 232mm. At the moment I think the pads are the wrong size as the outer 20mm of the breaking surface on the disc is rusty. I'm by no means an expert but it looks to me like the pads are for the smaller discs?????
-
believe the fronts are 312mm and rears are 282mm.

I'm a clown! Thanks for pointing thatout. Just found a thing saying some are bigger at 345mm. Do you know what that's about?
-
345mm sounds like the s3 brakes. need bigger calipers to run them.
-
If you give the supplier your reg number against the set you want they'll tell you whether they fit or reccomend another size. I thought the edition 30's and pirelli's ran the 312mm fronts and the 345mm were for the R32 fronts. The gti's had the 288mm with the upgrade of the 312mm? If I'm wrong I appologise
