Title: Depo Projector Style Headlights
Post by: Georrge on February 26, 2015, 10:35:34 am
Hi guys,

I've been looking into changing my headlights to projectors for some time now, and came across various threads along my way. It's left me with a few questions to ask.

First of all, what are projector headlights? How do they differ from normal halogen headlights? :ashamed:

Secondly, are the Depo headlights actual projectors, so having a HID kit in them is safe and legal?

Thirdly, am I right in thinking that in order to have genuine VW Bi-Xenon Projectors legally, you need headlight washers? Why is this the case, and not for the Depo's?

Finally, what is the difference between genuine projectors and the Depo ones, and the Depo ones and Hella ones?

Thank you!

Hi Mate

1.Projector headlights project the light beam whereas reflector headlights reflect the beam (i think)
2. Depo ones are projectors, Yes using a HID kit in them is legal
3. Not sure, A few people have retrofit them but not done washers and had no issues
4. Genuine projectors have shutters so when you flash to pass, the shutter opens fully which is also used for full beam. (Providing you have a highline CECM and run a wire from the lights to the CECM) also the genuine ones are self leveling (If you have the sensors fitted) and the Depo ones are manually levelling using the headlight scrolling adjuster

From what I know;

"Genuine Projectors" would have to be OEM Xenon lights, need an adaptor to connect them the MKV GTI fitted with halogen reflector lights along with ballasts etc.

"Hella Projectors" (I have them in mine) are deemed to be OEM? That's what mine were advertised as by the seller in Germany. They must have been standard equipment on a particular MKV variant. These have Halogen bulbs fitted in the housing which then shines through a projector lens, the look identical to OEM Xenon lights from outside. An aftermarket Xenon/HID kit is able to be fitted to these lights.

The "Depo" ones are very much the same as the Hella type I believe but are just not OEM quality.

The washers don't need to be fitted for the lights to work but it may not be legal? It is technically illegal here in Australia but I've never heard of someone getting picked up for it.

Thank you both for the info, that cleared that all up nicely!
Now the question is whether to get the Depo or the Hella lights? I've struggled to source the Hella ones.. but have found the Depo ones for £199!

Also, what HID kit is best suited? 6000K? Want s nice white light, but nothing blue

Think OEM are usually 4750k or something like that, not just as bluey as 6000k.

Standard xenons are 4300k I have 5000k in my depo projectors and they are perfectly white I'm very pleased not blue at all

I have depos with 4300k hids. Nice white light. Light output is good...no complaints

I'll probably go with 5000K then :happy2:

Does anyone know where currently sell the Hella projectors? They're literally impossible to come across :signLOL:

it should be set to Xenons without shutter installed. Theres something to do with a grounding issue with the wiper motor linking to the headlight

I have no idea what those first ones are, they're so ugly :signLOL:

£399 for Hella's is extremely overpriced

I've looked into the Hella ones and they are sold out everywhere.

Have spoken to Hella themselves and they've told me there is no available stock and one side is now discontinued.

The tuning fanatics shop on ebay don't have any, so unless someone is keeping stock, 2nd hand ones are the only way?

This is why im thinking of getting the Depo ones as long as they function ok, and the quality is good.

I just got myself a set of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK5-2003-2009-R32-Gti-Style-Black-Projector-Head-Lights-Lamps-Depo-Pair-/301204859556

Can somebody recommend a good HID kit? I'm looking on HID's Direct at the moment, do I need 35W or 55W?

Thanks :happy2:
Title: Re: Depo Projector Style Headlights

I bought these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/H7-55-Watt-Smart-Canbus-HID-Xenon-Conversion-Kit-3-4-3k-5-6-8-10-K-SEAT-/221131893476?

I went for 6000K as I noticed with 55W the 5000K starts to look yellow like 4300K (based on a kit I had in the past, although that could have just been a poor quality kit). Mine come out a nice clean white.

Cheers

I just ordered a kit off hids-direct. 35W and 5000K, that's what they recommended to me knowing i wanted pure white and nothing blue-ish.

I'm looking forward to the new set up, never had HIDs before!

I'm fitting them tomorrow so I'll update then! Apparently the 6 o'clock mod is no big deal, and the coding is minimal, it's just setting it to xenons without shutters to prevent flickering and the wiper motor burning out :happy2:

I have some condensation in one of them though and it's been about 5 hours, although I did wash the car.. is this normal?

Also, I read that with HID kits, you shouldn't start the car up with your lights on? It can fry the ballast or something? Can anyone shed any light on this?
My lgihts come on automatically when I unlock the car, so would mean having to manually switch them off, starting the car up, then turning them to auto again :signLOL:

I've got the depo with a 35W HID kit and in the beginning it used to drain my battery. But turned the coming home and leaving lights off and ive had no problems since

Glad you got on well.
What was the actual process of the 6 o clock mod?
Also, is it critical to get them coded?
I'm new to this forum and have no access to the software, so don't see an easy solution.

Cheers

I didn't do the 6 o'clock mod, I thought I'd try and get away without doing it but it's really noticeable, so I need to find out how to do it and get it done haha :signLOL:
They will still work without being coded, however I think not having them coded can lead to your wiper motor burning out for some reason!
If you make a post on here, you will be able to find someone near you with a cable and they will sort it out for a small fee

The light output is insane though, really worth doing!

Still worried about doing this 6 oclock mod!!
If I was to get the car coded for xenons before I installed them would that cause any issues?
Really having trouble finding someone in London with VCDS who can help me.

6 o'clock mod

1. Cheap dremmel off eBay - £10 - make sure it includes cutting discs
2. Use a pen/pencil/marker and mark lines to the opposite side to the tab side of the bulb holder. Mark the lines so you can cut a tab similar to the other side.
3. Use the dremmel to cut your markings..take some care here....the dremmels can cut through very easily..don't drop the bulb (obviously )
4. Put the bulb back into the projector upside down

DONE..! 5 minutes :happy2:

Post by: Georrge on March 12, 2015, 08:22:09 pm
Cheers for that Philli, so the headlights stay on the car, it's just the bulb that needs to be removed and altered?

Ha...as tempting as this is I think you should do it.. it's that easy and you get the satisfaction of putting in the (not so) hard work!!

If ur local to Reading I'd do it.. Saves faffing with posting..buy a dremmel..you'll always need one...i need to use mine to do a tiny touch up on my alloys..lol

Thanks a lot, apprecoated!

Another thing regarding the lights, I read that starting the ignition with your lights on is bad for the ballasts, is this true? I have coming/leaving home lights so when it's dark, my lights are on before I start the car. Starting the car up causes them to go much brighter for a second, I guess a spike in power?

Cheers

Says 0 available however they have another set available with a different picture.  It says depo as the manufacturer  but another seller on ebay also uses the same picture but they are advertising it as the manufacturer to be  TYC.

Last thing I want is them to send it and its not depo manufactured

Rather than starting yet another thread on these, I thought I'd ask a couple of queries in here.

I'm looking at a few sets on eBay and all are in Europe. Does anything need done to allow them to be used in right hand drive cars?

This 6 o'clock mod that's been mentioned before, is it just if HID bulbs are being fitted? I'm only planning on fitting standard bulbs. Will they still need coded as xenons without shutter, or again is that just for HID's?

They will work without coding but you should tick the box xenons without shutters to avoid the wiper motor from blowing

right then! i have had my Depos delivered and hid kit delivered too.

I was somewhat taken aback by the amount of wires but it all looks pretty straightforward.

A couple of questions though...

1. the wires that come from the Depo are yellow and black. The wires that go from the HID kit to the Depo are red and black. I am assuming that black goes to black and yellow goes to red. Can anyone confirm? (and yes i did RTFM :D)
2. where does the ballast live? looks like there is a similar shaped space/hole under the light unit. I'd need to hack some bits to make the kit fit exactly, but should i mount the ballast there?

any help would be massively appreciated!

thanks

Hi wires do look scary but are straight forward to fit.

holes will be required in the covers approx 22mm
Yes red to yellow and black to black. You can situate the ballasts under there as I did mine the same way but if one or both fail it's off with the bumper and headlight out as I had done. buy cheap maybe get lucky or unlucky in my case  :signLOL:

right, got it all installed, wasn't too bad in the end. The only thing that doesn't seem to be working though are the sidelights. Although it's difficult to tell in day light.

Sorry what do you mean don't seem to be working?.

Do you mean the running lights when car lights are on?.

If yes you need to go into vagcom central electric 09 and then into long coding and select one of the bytes can't remember which one. Daytime running lights and set that to what ever percentage you want. I went for 40% lights out put and then press enter on laptop and you'll see that it's selected in the box next to where you typed 40% or your spec. Then X out of it and it should come up another Bix thay says do it click on it and thy will be done  :signLOL:

Neither front left or front right parking lights are working. The dashboard is reporting both are faulty. Need to investigate but have another problem now where my bonnet won't open :(

Lol its a pita  :signLOL:

Try use your phone camera reversed if you can or a piece of mirror so you can see where the bulb is situated then try blind as I did. When I had to replace the led bulbs for normal ones but still have a dash bulb out error for the fronts and now rears as I have the double brake mod done.

Have you posted before. You've obviously tried new bulbs or did a swop of the bulbs?. Checked fuse?.

Are you using a hid kit or the old bulbs?

If using a HID kit, have you coded using VCDS?

You don't need to code then in.
Only thing coding in is shutters off as these are not factory xenons or you'll blow your wiper motor.

Anyone recommend a reliable seller for the DEPO or Bi-Xenon headlights? I'm always a bit wary of buying on eBay ...

Hi All,

New poster but have been visiting for months!

I have recently just installed depo projectors and 5000k 35w HID kit. Not too happy with beam pattern but will do 6 o'clock mod to see if that helps.
My main question is regarding to how I adjust the main beam, they are too low (lower than dipped beam!).
The dipped beam has 2 points to adjust them, but I cant see any for the main beams, anyone know how to do it?
Thanks!

Ditch the hid kit and get led H7 bulbs. So much better and no need to worry about ballasts failing.

LED on left, HID on right

Hi, I’m about to purchase some used Depo projectors to fit on my Jetta with factory halogens. I’ve decided on LED H7’s instead of HID’s to avoid the extra hassle of ballast failure, placement, coding and 6 o’clock mod etc

Any chance you could tell me with LED bulbs these are and where I can get them? Also, how long have you had them and would you recommend them? Any issues?

Thanks in advance

Me too, especially if you can run “normal” bulbs not HIDs

Just had to change a low beam bulb, ended up taking the headlight unit out!

It's too tight on the driver's side.

Still need canbus friendly led sidelight bulbs that fit in the socket, any recommendations?
