Evening all. I've got the standard exhaust on my mk5 GTI and the tips look like they have never been cleaned. The car had done 80k. I gave them a wipe with some metal polish and they came up OK. They still have loads of rust spots and seem to be stained yellowish. Any ideas to bring them back to life?

Metal polish, wire wool and elbow grease has good results for me.
-
Brillo pads are ace for exhaust tips!
-
I use Silvo and they come up a treat! Look in supermarkets in the house cleaning isles. In a tin :happy2:
-
all i can say is good luck as it's going to take some serious elbow grease and results whilst always producing better looking tips than what they were can vary in how much better - so best not to have expectations of that stainless steel brand new cutlery look from the start

Autosol metal polish with 00 grade wire wool or a fine scouring pad.

Autosol top product Halfords about £5-6 really good stuff
-
Autosol does amazing things to my milltek tips but on standard exhaust tips which haven't really been maintained you'll be there forever lol
-
I use autosol also and and find it good also
-
Fine wire wool with Autosol if its really bad then grade it back.
Britemax Metal twins are great with a dremmel style tool and small polishing head.

Caustic Soda, make sure it's massaged in to all the nooks and crannies. Best to,use bare hands, so that you can get it exactly where you want it....

Best advice ever given on a forum award goes to......

Ha ha, would definitely get all the soot and crap off though. Only downside is all the skin it would remove!
-
Thanks for the advice guys

I use Autosol and #0000 wire wool to clean my Milltek tips; works and absolute treat and brings them up like new.
-
Another vote for Autosol here.............always brings my Milltek tip up a treat! :pomppomp:

I wouldn't bother with the stock exhaust pipes
They are mild steel and will start to rust again almost immediately.
On mine we sanded them and then went through about 4 or 5 different stages of metal polishing to get them back up
They went horrible again after a few weeks even when coated in a hi-temperature wax.
-
Autosol metal polish for the win!
-
Deffo autosol.
-
I still have the stock exhaust tips, but what I do, is after every drive yep, every drive I take a damp microfiber towel and wipe the insides of the tips, and use a dry microfiber towel right after to each tip to buff em clean - They look perfect
Getting them looking perfect in the first place is a different story... 0000 steel wool, P21S Polishing soap, and elbow grease
-
i always use fine wire wool and carbon collective metal polish !
-
Mine were really bad when i bought the car fine wire wool and autosol for me too now nice and clean so only need soft cloth and autosol to keep the shine
-
So I started on the exhaust tips with 400 wet and dry, which took the soot and corrosion off really well but not the scratches. Are the tips stainless or plated?I

Yip! I did deserve that, you were quite right. My excuse was I was feeling tired and hungover from the night before and didn't really read before I began to type. I'll keep on top of them for a while during the weekly wash and see how I go.

used wire wool, then different grades of emery cloth to get the crap off and then finished with autosol which brought them up a treat for about a couple of weeks, they look caked now so will be interesting to see how easy they are to clean back to a polish again.
autosol defo works well but its all the other caked on crap that makes it a pain to look good again.

Mothers mag and aluminium polish for me :happy2:
