Title: Is it possible to modify an ESP switch as an On/Off Button?
Post by: usmangti on March 02, 2015, 04:06:06 pm
As above, reason being fancy having the ability to switch off an amplifier for a subwoofer when I have the kids in the car. Currently modifying the switch blank but also thought if I could use the ESP flipped around on the right it would illuminate also. Trying to keep it all oem looking rather than just use a rocker switch. I know you can buy custom switches of a site but they are nearly 70Euros delivered.

Ideally I am looking for a wiring diagram for the button. Also considering the Winter mode button also.

Thanks in advance

im looking to do something similar to switch on and off my dab unit as I don't want it constantly powered on as we only use it sometimes. so far I have only found a rocker switch but also want to keep it oem.

you got a link to the custom switches?

I have found this on the web, can anyone explain to me what wires need to be connected to illuminate and use as a on/off switch:

Subject to how your equipment needs to be wired this set up will work for most typical situations as long it's its a low amp circuit or a relay will be required as there's no swich rating details provided!

Pin 6 earth for illumination off dash lights on - (brown wire)
Pin 3 feed from lighting circuit for dash lighting illumination - (grey)

Pin 5 fused feed for the circuit to be controlled
Pin 4 switched side of circuit to activate item to be turned on upon button activation.

Pin 1 earth for the light illumination for the switch side of the circuit - the button will illuminate when the item controlled by the push button is in the on position.
Note pin 6 and 1 can be joined together.

@doylebros (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6153) thats is excellent thank you. Its just for a amp remote wire so the switch should be more than capable.
Can I ask, did you get that info from the pic above or a vw wiring diagram?

Just to add a bit to this,  all vw switches are not on-off,  there like a door bell just push on,  so you will need to add a latching relay so with each press of the switch will turn relay on,  then next press will turn off,  plus regardless of power to the relay as it has a magnet in it hence latching it remembers it's last told command

@SI-R32 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1757) Thanks for the info, do you mean it will forget the last position when the ignition is turned on/off or literally like a door bell where it will only work aslong as the button is depressed. Because if Its not the the latter I could probably live with that.

All as stated above is correct!
However, your drawing for the switch offered is not a momentary switch so if your buying as per the drawing all will be good to go.
If you're going to use a VW switch you'll have to fit the latching relay or your amp will only work when you've got the button pressed.

Aah ok that makes sense. The wiring diagram is supposedly for the vw switch. So this latching relay, I've had a quick look on eBay and seen for about £20ish, is that how much they are?

Maplins do a latching relay less than £5.00

This is worth watching to help you understand

Sadly the Maplin one, although a good find,  isn't really suitable for your application as it comes with 2 coils,  one for on one for off.

You could use one with a magnet in so once you've pressed your switch and released it the contacts will stay closed until you press it again,  I paid 20 quid for mine from Farnell,  just had a look about nothing obvious I could see.

Or just get a normal relay with 2 sets of contacts and follow the superb tutorial that John posted up

Any update/progress on this? just thought about this idea myself, and wanted to know if you were successful?
at the moment, i have installed a on/off switch underneath the wheel to control the amp.

I've not done as I couldn't find the switch I wanted from breaker so just stuck a normal rocker switch in. Use a fuse tap if u want it work on ignition.

Ah fair enough, i have had to resolve to this for now. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi68.tinypic.com%2F206gaoy.jpg&hash=e05d2957e7f2457c51fd6369deefa3b19f3594ec)

I took power from the cigarette circuit, so its always live, hence the switch.
But i do plan to get add a switch to the center console. make it look like OEM.
Just purchased all the stuff needed today. Got myself a latching switch, lets see how that pans out.

Yeah I came across these, just couldn't justify its price at the moment.
May get them later on though.

Your look amazing though.
I will contact them to see if they can make a custom one for me, with am amplifier image or "amp" written on it. For now, ill try to use the latching switch and add the blank cover on it and see how that pans out.
