Title: Oil light
Post by: Markweir12 on March 05, 2015, 08:52:54 am
Hi,

Yellow oil light came on this morning for me. Always checked level etc but when I finally got to pull over, the cap was full of gunk and so was the dipstick?

The car is my daily and gets driven to and from work and I give it a fair blip too.

Whats broken?

People have had this due to the cold weather but it's mainly people who do short journeys.
How's your coolant level?

Coolant level is fine.

I do short journeys to work and back everyday and to the gym.

How do I get the light to go off then?

The gunk will probably be caused by the short journeys it's condensation.
Take the car out for a good drive it might sort itself out.

I would hang about to see if anyone else can shed some light, I'm not an expert that info is from stuff I've read on other threads on here  :happy2:

Probably worth getting it scanned to see if there is any faults there, where are you based?
Have a look on this link and see if there's someone near to you.

I believe the oil light is oil pressure, so if the oil level is ok, it might be not getting up to pressure correctly.

If that's the case i would say don't drive it, low oil pressure is as bad as having low oil, as it needs the pressure to correctly move around the engine.

I take it u've had a look around the engine for leakingness.

Car was on ramp yesterday getting the turbo studs replaced to the downpipe.

Work are gonna do another oil chance and run the diagnostics on it to check the issue

Kool, well fingers crossed it's some thing simple, like a cable plug left off.

If it was oil pressure it would have a red light and not amber. (Amber is level) My golf showed an amber light once so i opened and closed the bonnet and it's never came on since...

Oil was slightly topped up in garage today - light has gone off.

Gonna take it for a rip tonight and hope the gunk clears itself :)

Will I need to replace the pick up or just clean it.

I wouldn't be doing any ripping until you've cleaned the pickup pipe.
Depending how dirty the pipe is it's quicker just to replace it!

Well he said it was the level light and not the pressure light?

It's a common problem just google it - plenty people have been lucky and undertaken the repair just in time which if ignored is an expensive repair!

The yellow light is nothing to do with oil pressure. Your oil level must have been low (was it?).

There's no need to drop the sump because of this.

Oil level was just above minimum?

Seems fine after a topup now anyway :)
