I am getting a knocking noise when I go over slight bumps or speed bumps in the road... This is in my Edition 30...
From previous cars I am guessing it could be the bushes?
Does this sound right? I can book it in for a check up but would be good to hear in advance any thoughts...
Car has done 48k miles if that helps
Cheers

coilovers upper bushes? arb?

I'm getting this on the rear. Changed a wheel bearing over the weekend which cured the humming/knocking that was causing but still have a know. I'm thinking possibly dampers.

just had a local service place look at it and they say its an issue with the steering rack.....
can see this being pricey now.... Dunno what it is with me and steering racks as I had to have a new one on my mk4 two years ago... :fighting:

For a new Gen3 rack and wiring loom adapter (Gen2 to Gen3) you are looking at circa £1400 including fitting. Well thats what it cost me Jan 14 when i had the rack replaced on my old MK5 Gt TDI 170.
Seriously. Get a second opinion!

I got a second opinion and it's been confirmed it's the rack..... VW quoted £895 exc vat and fitting so probably works out same as previous poster...
I am looking at second hand ones on eBay now.. There are a couple taken from low mileage cars for about £180

I had my steering rack done,
Check out Motors in Motion, Worksop. I got mine for £150, and got it fitted locally witihin 3/4 hours at £36 per hour labour. So wasn't horrific.

Are there any other symptoms of a failing rack, other than knocking? My ED30 is coming up for 90K so I'm preparing myself for some big bills. Mine feels a little 'loose' and not as sharp as I remember MK5s feeling when new.
It's the bloody massive wheels they fit to cars these days wearing the buggers out prematurely.

I know it's unlikely, but my Explorer started making a thump over certain bumps, it was a rear wheel bearing that was shot.

Buddy you 100 percent certain it's the rack I only ask as in a vw tech and my edition was identical noise and I was thinking the rack but only under the shake plates at work found the front roll bar bushes giving away ever so slightly. I also only say as there a few guys here who have condemned racks for customers and it's not fixed it, and been the arbs. A lot of coin for a no fix solution.
