Been getting a knocking noise and hoped it would be bushes or something mild.... turns out I have an issue with my steering rack and its had to go somewhere else for a full check to see the exact issue...
Any ideas on whether steering racks usually get specific parts replaced or do they tend to have to be complete units? If so how much am I looking at for a new steering rack?
cheers guys

Sadly.. its the full rack. Cost to replace with a new one is ~700-800 :fighting:

Wasn't there a recall on steering racks, or am I thinking of another car?

Arggghhh.. The annoying thing is it is just a knocking noise when I go over a bump and it's only on one side... It feels like it's something like just a bush or minor... Steering is fine and no issues at all with that... Just seems ridiculous that it would be the rack itself

It's only done 46000 miles too

Mines only on 30k and it was knocking

What was the issue mate?
It's going in for a second opinion in the morning... Last thing I need is a £650 + labour bill... I have seen some second hand racks on eBay I may consider

If it is your rack that's gone then there's no way I'd buy a brand new one. A used one from a GTI breaking would probably be like 50 quid.

The rack went on mine 2 days before I was meant to collect it from the garage where I was buying it, it was in VW for a service & DSG oil change at the time, when the garage went to collect it there was a steering fault light on the dash so the VW took it back inside and promptly hit him with a £1500 to replace the whole rack, they said something anout a sensor error. I dunno, sounds a bit harsh having to swap the whole rack for something like that. Maybe he got his pants pulled down by the dealers, just glad I didnt have to foot the bill :).

Rack was knocking badly

Well I have just taken it into my usual garage and they got it up on the lift and checked the bushes and checked movement in the wheels... He said there isn't enough movement for it to be the rack itself.. he said the bushes were fine too. He narrowed it down to the tie rod arm on the left hand side... As soon as he said it I remembered I had the right hand one done at my MOT last year...
He's replacing it and putting it through its MOT next week..
Thankfully its not the steering rack itself!
