Title: Fitted MDI today
Post by: chrisr32 on November 29, 2009, 04:22:05 pm
After buying the Media Device Interface MDI several months ago, I finally got around to fitting it to my RNS 510.
I had a bit of help off my friend who is a VW Master Tech.
It has been installed so that my Ipod is hidden away in the glovebox.
I am pleased that my 6 disc changer in the armrest also still works. Not that I need it now with the amount of tunes on my Ipod.
I got the MDI and Ipod cable for just over £100 (discount through my mate).
I am very happy now with the artists/ track names showing on the RNS screen and Highline screen.

Looks great, I am just aboutvto invest in the 510, Bluetooth kit and the mdi cable - do you have the part number for the cable you installed, and any pictures of it fitted.

Many thanks

Hi Oli,
The Media Device Interface is a module that gives you full control over your Ipod/ MP3 player. You can either buy an Ipod cable or USB cable to connect to the MDI.
The MDI unit is hidden behind the head unit or centre console.
I think the RRP for the MDI from a dealer is around £140 and the cable is about £20. As I said I had both for just over £100 through my mate.
I have got the part numbers for you. I will try to find them.

Chris - If I only want USB functionality, do I still need the full MDI unit with all the ipod trimmings? I won't use these so want to get away with the minimum

would the MDi work with the RCD300 as my ipod cable packed in so was thinking of replacing it with another.

^^^ Pretty sort it won't Keith, IIRC you need one of the later touchscreen units, (i.e. RCD510 or RNS510)

Is there a retrofit guide for MDI to the arm rest usb/ipod connection specifically please?
Took apart the dash surrounds today although couldn't feed the Aux lead from the dash anywhere outside to the front of it, i.e. couldn't find a gap/hole whatsoever so I gave up  :ashamed:

Don't know what I missed but it's gotta be fed to the underside of the armrest MDI connection  :indifferent: ?

Thanks.

^ Rob, I don't think it does for what I need fella. It only illustrates the glove box stuff there (unless I've missed something?).

I specifically am stuck at the point of where to stick the lead from the RNS-510 area round the back of the glove box to get it out into the open cause I'm feeding it all the way out in the open to the arm rest, not the glove box as that guide seems to instruct?

The only route out seems to be where the RNS-510 Nav aerial is alongside the glove box compartment area.
I can't for the life of me see down there for it my hand under, so it's a stab in the dark literally as to where I feed the AUX end of the MDI lead to get it to the open side of the dash in the cabin, if you like?

Thanks.

Can't you feed the cable down from the back of the RNS510 to the side of the centre console and then into the armrest area, following the orange line

Camel, yeah, that bit is fine.

It's getting it to that point, the furthest left in your pic if you like, that I'm unsure about. Where is my passage from behind the RNS-510?

The whole area round the back seems surrounded by plastic with no exit out to the glove box or the other side, so its like I just need to get it into the cabin area then the rest is easy.  :chicken:

I'll post some pics when I get a chance so I can make myself clear  :ashamed:

There is a gap from where the the RNS sits towards the steering column (that's the route I used to install my cable for the RVC) and you can drop down there to the centre console

I'll have a go tomorrow.

What's the RVC sorry?

^ Cheers Ollie.

Well I finally finished my MDI install to the USB port in the arm rest today.

Fuming tbh  :fighting:
After taking all the care and consideration to not scratch or dent anything, I've ended up with a scratched RNS-510 screen and dented + scratched climate control unit. This is the second replacement one too, as I scratched the first in EXACTLY the same way - £130 to waste it seems... Oh and 3/4 broken clips on various plastic bits. Everything went back in happily so I have no idea where they came from

This is all despite using a tea towel to protect the climate control fascia and also to rest the RNS-510 on.
Doesn't help that my drive way is quite steeply sloped but even so, I have to work with what I've got. I'm also not exactly an expert on this kind of stuff, but with various guidance and FAQS and on second attempt today, it didn't really go smoothly.

I even wore some surgical style gloves cause after attempting it yesterday, as I cut my hands in about 8 places. The cold didn't help but it felt facking raw out there despite the sun.

All in all, anyone planning on retrofitting the MDI to the Arm rest setup, prepare for frustration and some very tight spots. Don't expect it to be clean and easy  :fighting:

That's not good news how did you manage to scratch both units

It sounds like the broken clips were from the lower surround around the climate control, they can't be replaced you have to replace the whole cover, however I have two broken ones and its not affecting how the panel fixes

Assume you found the space on the drivers side where to drop the cable down

At least you already had the cd changer armrest, I found swapping that over really was a pig  :fighting:

:signLOL: I don't know mate tbh, as I say I knew I was going to do it and had the right measures in place to prevent it, but the tea towel kept slipping off.

Na the clips were from the assembly above the dash, the speaker looking grill thing where the front de-mister connection is. Not a problem though as it all went back to place without issue.

I did find the gap, thanks for the pointer  :happy2:

I also retrofitted the MDI interface into the arm rest, that wasn't a barrel of laughs either. At least I've done it now
