I need to change the rear disks and pads, which means removing the rear calipers.
So ... can anyone please give me a link as to where I can get the required 14mm Spine Tool?
I've searched eBay, Amazon etc and drawn a blank. I don't really want to lash out on an expensive full set for one tool/one job!
Thanks out there.

Not done rear discs and pads but here you go...

I used this set to change when changing my front shocks last week, but you might be better off wiith the one above for the brakes

ive never removed the rear calipers. the rear disc is quite thin and can be removed at a slight angle. well on a tdi its possible. not sure about GTI
-
Spline sockets? Halfords. Not too pricey
-
There isn't much room Rich, between the bolt and the strut iirc. The dealer tool / socket is shallow and gives that required space

on the 1.9 you can do it but the gttdi you to remove the carrier for

Don't forget you'll need a caliper wind back tool.
I've changed (or had changed) three sets of rear discs and pads and each time the caliper has been seized (different cars).
-
Thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated.
Tfsi Mike - that looks the one. The longer ones don't give the required clearance - so I understand......do they?
Got the wind back tool.
Now just hope that the bolts are not too tight/seized!
-
Maxitrol - just had a closer look at that set. They look short as well. Cheers

The Laser 30mm ones in my second link should be just the job?
-
Paid around £4 for mine off ebay and did the job just fine
It is tight in there with the strut etc but certainly doable without any special tools!
Bolts on mine were very tight and one caliper was seized  turned into a nightmare job to be honest as then had to order a new genuine caliper in red off ebay and bleed system etc
Make sure you apply a dab of loctite to those spline bolts when refitting as last thing you want is those coming loose
:happy2:
-
Yeah, a nice long 1/2" bar helps too!

Yes, many thanks. Have just got link to open.....
Lots of answers and lots of choice! :happy2:
Hopefully a 24" breaker bar should be long enough - if not I'll have to get my 6ft bar, used for shifting VW Beetle rear hub nuts!
-
This one looks like it's designed for the job if you can wait for USA postage!

Otherwise, I got a set like this, and can confirm the small sockets work fine.

I did mine without removing the carrier, just had to shimmy them around and off they came.

Do you know how much this cost Mike?
-
I'll look through my receipts for you
-
It's made by Snap-On for VW costs around £13
-
Been out all day. £18 rings a bell.

I'd seriously recommend buying the Halfords (http://www.halfords.com/motoring-travel/tools-diy/socket-sets/halfords-advanced-professional-7-piece-spline-bit-socket-rail-1-2) spline kit, top quality, I put the 14mm spline bit under serious pressure and not a mark on it. Was gutted at first having to buy a whole set for one piece, but wow what a quality kit.
-
^^^ x 2
I've got the Halfords spline kit as well, expensive, but good quality, and not much choice on a sunday afternoon :sad1:
-
On a Sunday it's your saving grace haha.
-
I have the halfords one but with my torque wrench space is extremely tight, we've had the tool stuck on a number of occasions haha
-
i have both the halfords one and the proper vw one, its doable with the halfords one especially as you don't have rear drive shafts on your gti's, however its easier with the vw one no matter what mk5 golf you own.
good luck undoing them if your only on axle stands as the hight needed to get the purchase on the breaker bar can be a problem with the ridiculous tightness vw do these up, plus throw in a bit of rust and corrosion and you'll be needing a swear jar pretty soon
-
Indeed. I've only ever done it on axle stands and it requires patience :)
-
There's definitely a knack to the angle whilst on the drive way... a nice mixture of Auto Trans fluid / Acetone makes the break torque a lot less for the bar on those splines, but they are hefty buggers and can take some punishment. :D
