Title: ED30 or Facelift S3
Post by: BenGTI on March 23, 2015, 06:37:14 pm
Hi guys, I know this is a golf forum but what do people think of the S3's I've been thinking of getting one, I already have a gti but obviously an Eddy would be a little upgrade.

Has anyone owned both and have any opinions!?

Thanks

i had an s3 for a month (cousin went to oz) and i own an edition 30 - im thinking of getting an s3 now, even though i prefer the way the golf feels lighter, the traction (or lack of) is just frustrating me too much now.

Ah okay well i have a normal golf at the moment but i just want more but i dont particularly want a golf straight after having one and as you say... ive heard after a FWD car gets over 300+ bhp they just spin unless its bone dry. Thing is if i get a S3 i would be taking it to stage two so hopefully i would still have fun in one !

I had an Audi A3 2.0 TFSI quattro and driving it day to day felt no different to my GTI except for being slower.
you had to be going ridiculously stupid things for you to notice the rear axle do any sort of power in the dry or wet. Snow would be a different story however..

I've owned both dude and I swapped my ED30 for the S3 if that helps!

Admittedly mine is a pre-facelift but very little changed mechanically between them. I think that the S3 is a better car in every way. My Eddy was a Stage 1 and had trouble putting the power down. I won't be having those problems with the S3! Plus the interior and particularly the steering wheel in the S3 is SO much better. A flat bottom wheel is a must if you bought one.

Thanks buddy! That's why I'm coming away from the idea of getting a Ed30 and getting a s3 yeah the interior is lovely In the S3

I best start car hunting!  :driver:

Have you considered an ED35 instead? Bit rarer than the ED30 it seems and being a mk6 has a lot of the nicer bits that us mk5 lot seem to "borrow" for our interiors!

£MEGA for one of those though. It's an ED30 with mk6 interior & body kit.

Exactly the same underneath

I got rid of my leon k1 this winter and moved to a a4 quattro, the difference is amazing,

In damp, or wet conditions stage one is pointless the car just can't put the power down, that's with a walk kit and goodyear f1 a2 on.

Id also go S3 mate although a do much prefer the look of the Golf
Love my standard mk5 Gti but know if a increased the power at all id hate it as find overpowered fwd cars very annoying/frustrating
Friend of mine has a Leon Cupra running around 360bhp and im affraid it's utterly pointless
Now that power in a S3 would be  :driver:

Best of both worlds would be a Golf R mk6-mk7 but big money then!
R32 also a great choice but not particularly fast, £500 road tax and no Booooost could be booring too although they do make a good noise :-)

Hmm, all this talk of more power being too much for a FWD car and people going for an S3... Is it normal that my reaction would be "ah well, lets just put a 4motion system on my GTI, that'll sort traction issues out"?

:-) that would be my ultimate Gti mate
Actually even prefer the look of the Mk7 performance pack Gti in carbon grey with the Santiago wheels over the Golf R if only it was 4x4
They should have just sacked the R off and gave the option of bigger powered 4x4 Gti  :jumpmove:

I haven't to be honest, i do live the ED30 but i already have a golf and a mk5 golf to a MK5 golf would just be abit boring i think.

S3's are not that terrible in money i think anymore you can get a decent facelift one for 14-15k with pretty good millage but the 4WD in them is just a pull to me, id love a Golf R mk6 but there are hardly any for sale and they are all bloody 5 door!

Thats what people have said that taking a FWD drive car over 300bhp is just pointless as it just cant keep traction  :scared:

That's the option I'd go for as well! Parts hunting gives something to do as well! Garage midnights golf seems to do alright with the power, and golfzilla as well?

Kind of what the R division did, they took out the compromise VW put into the design to lower the overall cost of the GTI.

For the cost of it, a stage 3 GTI with 4motion is still less than a newer S3 or mk6 Golf R! (Depending on how much work you do yourself and sourcing parts at discounted prices).

Personally think much over 200bhp in a fwd car is pointless mate especially without a fancy limited slip Diff  :happy2:

Others will disagree but its a simple sum of physics not rocket science

As long as you're sensible with the go-faster pedal, high power in a FWD is manageable. I will admit, there have been times when lapse in concentration has made me realise 250bhp through the same wheels that control the direction of the car can cause a bit of a conflict... But I'm still here to tell the tale!

I reckon i wont be disappointed with an S3, and after ive took it to stage 2 ill love it

Obviously its different for everyone but i went from a stage 1 gti to an edition 30 dsg and its a completely different machine, made me fall for the mk5 platform all over again take one for a test drive, as the fist says a 4wd coversion its that much of a bank buster if you get stuck in and source at good prices

Don't forget buying an S3 isn't that much different to an ED30 these days! I paid less for my S3 than i sold my ED30 for, admittedly my ED30 was pretty much the best spec you could buy and so good it was sold to me by a VW dealer. But i got a low mileage decent spec 3 door S3 for what people are paying for ED30s! And I don't have to put a 4WD system on it as an extra!
