Title: Castrol EDGE 5W40
Post by: Stamanatic on March 25, 2015, 11:28:28 am
Hello,

Read a fair few topics on edge 5w30 and edge 5w40, people saying 40 is better for track days for the higher temps. I never track my gti and it's only stage 1, and I don't drive it too hard and use it everyday. But 5w40 is half the price of the 5w30, is 40 really only more suitable for people who drive it harder to reach higher oil temps?

Any links to exact one mate
Vw 502-505? £26.77 on ebay 4 litres

5w/30 Edge is actually cheaper as you get 5 litres delivered for £30.60 and its the correct vw 504-507 spec
Thanks

I run Millers Nanodrive CFS 5w40, doesn't meet the spec, it exceeds it. Spec rating is largely irrelevant anyway, just a huge amount of money an oil company must pay to VW for a pointless test.

5w-40 fully synthetic can withstand higher temperatures before expiriencing "cracking" (same process used for natural crude oil to separate it into it's separate layers). Anything over a stock engine will generate more heat but this is slightly negated by using higher octane fuel which burns cooler in the combustion chamber.

End of the day, I've yet to see solid proof that 5w30 is better or worse than 5w40 oil used long term.

Grand so I'll stick with 5w40 so seeing as 5w30 is more than double the price.

Does the 40 weight put more demand on the Oil pump?

I see a lot of the Diesels are using 5w30 now... namely an Evoque SD4 only wants 5w30 Edge "Professional" C1 Oil, hmm.

Be great to get one oil for both motors, perhaps "Millers Nano Drive", is that C1?

there's not really much in the way of strain, the pump just pumps volume and the oil pressure is built by the restriction.

I've always used 5w40 oil, aside from when I did the sump as I could only buy decent 5w30 mobil1 stuff.

Use 5w40 in my rocco!

I'm also using the Miller's Nanodrive CFS stuff.....it's brilliant. I usually run 5w40 daily but use 10w50 for track use.

was wondering about this, when my car had a new hpfp and camshaft due to follower wearing through my mechanic put 0/30 edge in.was going to pull him on it but trust him being vw specialist for 20 odd years. maybe a 5/30 or 5/40 oil change should be on the cards after saying its to thin.
