Hi all
Well long story short took car for service (I only brought her 26th Jan)
garage very reputable so know they wouldn't say I needed something done when don't BUT
the oil filter had collapsed
its burning oil
carbon build up on plugs
cambelt needs replacing
oil warning light for sensor & pressure
thick black oil
n/s rear caliper sticking
front and rear discs and pads
plus 2 new tyres!
I brought it from a proper car sales place with 6 months warranty
I understand the perishables are not covered and I don't mind about them but
is my engine fighting a loosing battle now?
Thanks for any advice you can give me :sad1:

service and u get new oil and filter!
put new plugs in , ask them if they can unstick caliper also ask for the brake disc measurements compare to manufacturer spec, replace cam belt when you can afford it check service history for last change on car
thick black oil tell them they are putting new oil lol
-
Oil pressure light =blocked pick up pipe.
Probably due to shiznit oil used in it.
Possible damage done to engine depending how long light has been on
-
Oil filter collapsed - replace it
Burning oil - that's pretty normal but put in some decent stuff and you'll probably see an improvement
Carbon build up on plugs - replace them
Cambelt - replace when you can
Oil warning - probably blocked pickup pipe so replace that
Thick black oil - change it
Sticky caliper - pretty common (I had to replace one)
Discs/ pads/ tyres - wear and tear
Sounds like it just needs a good service and a few other normal bits have come at the same time, its a pain to have to fork out all the £££ at once but after all that it should run great and not need much for a while.
When I first bought mine I spent nearly £1k on new plugs/ caliper/ discs/ pads /bushes/ oil + filter/ fuel filter/ thermostat/ wipers and more I've forgotten but it was worth it for piece of mind and the cars been fine for 15000 miles since.

As above get all that changed.
Usually i change majority of that anyway when i buy a car just for peace of mind.
Should run well once all that is changed.

Thanks guys I'm happy to do all the usual stuff was just a bit concerned when they said it was burning so much oil as didn't know if I could be looking at piston rings/seals etc?
They've done the service and said its running a little better but not 100%!
There trying to free up the caliper for me but might be able to get that changed under warranty "faulty"
Realistically how much should I be paying for cambelt change and am I correct in thinking the water pump gets replaced at same time? It was last done at 93k in 2009 it's now on 134k checked vw say every 120k or 4 years whichever is sooner!
-
Cambelt change every 60k or 4 years whichever comes first mate, as for price unless you have a good mechanic friend expect a bill of around £300+ with waterpump :happy2:
If the caliper is sticking id just demand that its replaced as its very rare that they are alright for long after trying to unseize them, tried a few times on mine and just gave up and fitted brand new one in the end (£79 ebay) sticking caliper causes 10% drop in mpg too

As all the above.
I've spend just over 1k on mine since buying it in Feb.
Full Service

Cam belt

And a few other bits and pieces
If you are planning on keeping the car then try not to get worried about spending money on it's up keep.
Hope it all gets sorted with minimal problems ;)

Unfortunately most mk5 Gti's are getting on a bit now and are starting to require a little tlc in various areas
Only had mine 8 months and have done a fair few jobs on it already
Most of which are preventative maintainance and some because Maybe a have touch of ocd
