Title: FITTED MFSW CHEAPLY DONE
Post by: Kam88 on April 06, 2015, 11:02:59 pm
So after few months of thinking and not wanting to buy a new steering wheel i decided to try something that everyone was saying can't be done. I have purchased a standard mk5 mfsw and took it apart. Unscrewed the buttons and took my steering wheel apart after comparing the wheels for a good while i decided to get to work.

After i did the first side i though its not as hard as i thought but at same time this was time of no return so i really hoped it will go well. So i carried on with the other side used just a stanley blade took about 15 minutes of carefully cutting away all the foam.

So once both were fitted i needed to cut a bit out at the bottom to get the module in which again took a few minutes but then i also needed a flat head screwdriver to dig some of the foam out, sounds horrible but as long as you are careful its all good.

once all been cut out and fit the airbag back into place.

Had it all coded today by @kalu (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3864) really nice guy took him a short while all works perfectly

finished product done all the work myself apart from coding

Total cost:
MK5 standard mfsw £40 once taken buttons off sold it on for £10 so Actually only £30
CH module from China £40
Airbag loom £15
Slipring £10
Stalk from China £20
HighLine clocks from USA £120

Total cost: £235 plus coding on top

I know its not greatest write ups but can save you some money like it saved me some money.
obviously i will be selling my midline cluster old module and the rest and hopefully i will be able to get some money back for them bits. So total cost be even lower.

Last thing is i have a kenwood double din and i have fitted auto leads stalk adaptor and i can't get it to work with the kenwood ??? anyone know maybe why? followed all the steps on instruction and no joy. Everything else works perfect with the highland all the buttons light up and work through the menu???

nice work, glad you didn't mess it up

have seen an r32 mfsw that looked a right mess after bodging it

on a proper mf wheel the ribbon cables are protected in channels to prevent chafing

@Eddie-NL (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2345)  yeah I saw the channels I used couple drips of glue at the end to keep them attached to steering wheel so they don't get cought. I am also glad that I didn't mess it up otherwise expensive way to fix it  :signLOL:

Do you need to remove all the foam behind the buttons, down to the metal or just enough for a tight fit??
Title: Re: FITTED MFSW CHEAPLY DONE
Post by: Kam88 on April 10, 2015, 06:26:11 am
some parts you do and some you don't just take some off and try to fit the buttons and just go in stages. don't try to remove loads as you might take off way to much. so better to take little at a time as you will not mess it up. remember you can't just put the foam back  :signLOL:

Got it all cut out and ready to glue the wire, also need to grab 2 screws to hold the buttons in place.

well done mate and just pop down to diy shop grab some screws simple as that match the thread obviously fairly easy to do and saves a lot of money.

So the screw mounting points for the buttons are already in there?

Yes, you just need to pick the rubber out from the screw hole...

Amazing. So much for all the nay-sayers saying it can't be done.  :congrats:

I have not yet fitted mine ! but it is all sitting ready to fit...

I had let a friend see the steering wheel today, he said that looks perfect, just the way they do look.   :signLOL:

Going to be doing this soon, so glad I seen this!

I love to do things that people say can't be done just to prove them wrong and to see their faces, I never take "can't do it" as an excuse, the only excuse they are making is they "can't be bothered" to try or take a risk at trying.

(If I get stuck I'll be screaming for help

Just out of Intrest, does the buttons clip into anything on the wheel or is it just one screw that holds it in place?
Title: Re: FITTED MFSW CHEAPLY DONE
Post by: Kam88 on May 14, 2015, 05:31:48 pm
if you take some of the foam out on the other side where the little notch is then it will sit in there perfectly and then screw it in  :happy2:

Yes, airbag loom and the little black connector at the bottom where the buttons wire and new airbag loom plug into

I think I'm going to fabricate some channels for the loom to sit in out of the foam that I've removed. #ghettofix  :signLOL:

So if I accidentally removed too much foam would the screws still keep the buttons from wobbling about?

You go pretty much to the petal and go little at a time and test fit also use bit of glue to make it better fit  :happy2:

Done this yesterday on an ED30

I won't be doing it again, I think the result with the buttons was not to bad. However the place where the module sits is not to my liking I'm sure it sits deeper on a proper m/f wheel

Does it really matter if it's covered by the airbag? Obviously as long as it's not chafing?

Done! Foam was a bit of a pain but all sorted now. My mute button doesn't work though? The long coding screen in VCDS flashes up for a second then disappears again? So I can't get to the long coding to change/check it?

For completeness, the torx screws for the buttons, if you want to get them from VW, are part number: N909 680 01. Approx 83p for 2 from memory.

Have you got genuine vagcom or copy sometimes that can make a difference?

Are you using vw radio ?? or aftermarket ?

I had problems with my vagcom where it did similar thing i left it till next day and tried it and BOOM coding worked that was for my valeo lights and to this day i don't know why it didn't work but got there eventually ?

Where did you get the little module from that goes at the bottom of the steering wheel?

And would these buttons do the job?

I stole the multifunction steering wheel out of my wife's car and put my non MF wheel into her car :ashamed:

She says sh doesn't mind but I know she misses the buttons!! Gonna do this job for her!! She'll be chuffed I know it! Thanks again for the write up :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:

So you have to have the highline clocks to fit these buttons? Sorry - total newb question but I really really miss simply changing the volume of the radio on the steering wheel having bought the golf. I was going to get the buttons from pashka but I don't want to have to spend another couple of hundred quid just to do that!

^If you do what I did and source a pair of older [pre 2005.5 model year] version buttons , not easy as they are quite rare, and your setup is like mine:

My setup is an RCD510, midline clocks, no bluetooth so obviously the left hand buttons don't do anything. But the right hand set let me:

1. Switch radio stations or tracks if listening to MP3s on SD card with the left and right buttons [as opposed to up/down on the newer buttons.]

2. Adjust the volume.

There is a mute button on the left hand button set but it doesn't work, I suspect it might work with bluetooth.

NOTE: If you try to do this with the newer buttons and a midline display cluster it WON'T WORK!

I'm going to have a crack at this soon. I bought:

Passat wheel with buttons: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322164478179 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322164478179) £45
CH Steering wheel module: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161853203992 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161853203992) £36
Airbag loom (Mk6, but should fit!) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201618601296 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201618601296) £11.22

Hopefully can sell my midline (for cruise) BN module and the wheel when I'm finished the install.

Not looking forward to doing the steering angle re-alignment thing

If all you need to do is change volume then you might get away with new style buttons? Cheaper and easier and if it doesn't work you can always sell them on.

I've got some second hand buttons so definitely older ones but no idea exactly how old. Looks like I need a few other bit though to even make them work by the look of it so need to collect a loom and the other bits from somewhere.

If they don't work I guess I can keep them on as they'll look smart!

Careful, there are 2 options depending on whether your airbag has single or dual ignitors!
