Title: Fitting IC
Post by: Madone on April 08, 2015, 01:55:14 pm
Hi,

At the risk of asking something obvious if I want to fit a IC, sounds like Peron or THS are best. Will these fit without any body mods at all ?, do they come with complete fitting kits ?. Or is the only non body mod solution a twintercooler type setup ?.

Thanks !

What do you mean body mod?
They replace the stock intercooler using factory mounting points..

Are there any downsides to installing an aftermarket larger capacity intercooler?
I do understand it helps the vehicle cool the incoming air faster and keeps it cooler longer
Is it likely to make the car harder to get upto temp in the cooler months or any other issues?

Not seen a thread that lists the negatives associated with the various modifications we carry out on our vehicles

pointless getting twintercooler.
the OEM intercooler is a huge sticking point for flow, cooling and power. why have 2 intercoolers when one is better?

ive got the airtec big intercooler and twintercooler. totally overkill  :signLOL:

What do you mean body mod?
They replace the stock intercooler using factory mounting points..

I mean do they require and bumper modification etc ?, some coolers make a point to saying 'No need to modify the bumper' indicating some could be required - others don't say anything, potentially indication some cutting required.

No, THS, Revo, APR, DsD, Peron don't require any modifications to anything to fit.
The stupid ones that go infront of the A/C rad for that true bad boy look may do.

Do these aftermarket intercoolers come complete with all the piperwork too?
Sounds like it might be a straightforward job after all with no visible signs of it being installed - which is something that appeals to me

i was planning on a forge style cooler as its seems eaiser to fit and personally i liek the look of the subtle cooler through the vents

Thanks, that's what I meant. I want one that looks as discrete as possible so black is a likely choice. I know Airtec are popular in Ford circles. Any opinion on these ?, hard is a cooler to fit ?, could it be done on the drive or is a ramp etc recommended ?

yeah it can be done on a driveway. I guess the S3, ths are more discrete as the front will look no different once fitted.

probably take a few hours to fit on your own.

I fitted a twintercooler to mine on little ramps on my driveway, took about 4 hours on my own, mainly because the silicone pipes provided were too long to fit and had to be trimmed to make them fit in properly. Fairly straightforward job and can feel a difference in power delivery without getting another remap.

both my airtec intercoolers were easy to fit on ramps at home. only need basic tools to. ive gone for black ones for the descrete look and they came complete with hoses and fittings. no mods or cutting needed to body work as they fit nicely.

It's fairly easy to fit just a bit fiddly.
Need to support the radiator and AC condensor.

Don't mean to hi-Jack, but saves me starting a new thread, are all s3 coolers the same and are they all more efficient than our standard gti ones?

They're more efficient. Darkside Developments sells an improved S3 IC. Other options are from THS and Peron.

Cheers, my only issue is cost. I have been offered an s3 cooler for very little money, it has plastic ends on it though, so wasn't sure if they all flow and cool better

Whole point is metal ends which better for heat dissapation I believe but mainly because they can take higher boost pressures before blowing.

Darkside's Uprated S3 intercooler is just a THS intercooler for about 2/3 the price.

Haha if it's no good I'll be in trouble then!!

Replace your AC condensor as well with a new one -  helps air flow so much.

Whats the difference between the old and new aircon condensor? Is it one off the Mk6?
Surely if you disconnect it the system will need regassing?

Is there a link to Uprated S3 intercooler you are referring to? I had a look at their website but couldnt see any kits that would fit the GTI just diesel stuff  :happy2:

@xjay1337 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7542) I'll look at the AC condensor. This Eddie has so few miles and was very well taken care of, might still be in good shape.

Thank you for the tip. :happy2:

Looks great and thanks for the links
Would be great if you could take a pic when you fit it compared to the standard ic
Very good price too!

Jay has pics of it fitted in his Rocco. I'm still gathering bits because I want to get them all fitted at the once.

I'll share pics when I have the new parts fitted.

Maybe i am reading it wrong but aren't the pipe upgrades for TDI engines ?, i think you said you had a Eddy ?

"We also produce Hard Pipe Kits for various TDI models which removes all of the clip connectors. Please see below"

"When fitting a Genuine S3 Intercooler to a TDI you would remove the clip connectors from the standard pipes and slide them over the 57mm Inlet / Outlet. Whereas with the Upgraded S3 Intercooler, you require these hoses to fit over the larger 70mm Inlet / Outlet"

Looks good value for sure, have anyone else got one of these ?, and feedback on the performance compared to say the Forge or THS ?

You have 3 options for the boost hoses. I chose the one for the TFSI engine.
