Well, I'm still planning on getting the E46 M3 in April, but I neeeeeeeeed to scratch the R32 itch that I've been having for years now. So I was thinking of getting one for now until next April.
My question is:
I read a while ago about a guy that went to a dealer and literally did a straight swap - his GTI for their R32. No cash paid. His argument was that the GTI would sell within two weeks, whereas the dealer was having problems shifting the R32 due to the big engine/road tax costs etc etc etc.
I was just wondering if anyone knew/could guess whether a similar deal could be struck now?
:scared:
-
My answer is;
You'll be disappointed.
I did this move back in 2006, and after a variety of different cars, I am back in a GTI, by far the better drive
-
Honestly i can't help you with that one mate as i don't know, but one thing i do know is if car tax and petrol wasn't the price it was i think i would have gone for an R32, there is just something about that car i love, purely the sound really but it is a heavy old girl.
Let us know how you get on :happy2:
-
I know what you're saying....
I've driven the R32 and it was OK, but I just can't get enough of the sound. Plus the 4wd will be good for the coming Winter months. Just want to own that car at some point in my life, and now seems like a good time to do it.

Yeah same! Just something about it that I need to have, even if its only for a few months!
-
Get yourself a mk4 R32 mate, will free up some cash and 'scratch the itch'. Will hold its value better than a mk5 gti and mk5 R32 i expect so you can have a free year of driving (sort of lol) :happy2:
-
i did see the R32 market drop, but i dont think things are as bad now, so i dont think theres many bargains about now

^ Yeah I have, and still am contemplating this, but the last thing i want is an older car to cause me mechanical issues, and therefore extra cost during the few months that I own it.
The thing is that I drove the MK4 and MK5 on the same day and really just couldnt get on with the MK4. Maybe it was just a bad example?!
I still reckon i could get a MK5 and it would hold its value by April...
-
I expect so mate. It should not lose anything.
Im selling mine for about 15.5k, which seeing as i bought it for under 15k isnt bad!

GTI's like mine are selling in VW Dealers for 15-16K. There are loads of R32's for around that value!
I just debate whether or not it would be attractive for a dealer to do? It sounds logical to me....if he is having trouble selling an R32, but could sell a GTI within weeks for the same price, then surely he would want to do that? I really should find the thread in which the guy posted about it to find more info from him!

In fairness all used cars have done this, and the worm is about to turn as the market has now slowed, and depreication will set in again soon
-
....
Whichever .:R you get, Chris, (the Mk5 will hold its value better) make sure it has a nice loud aftermarket exhaust so you can enjoy that V6 music!
I've overtaken seen quite a few 09-plate Mk5 R32's recently.
-
R32's have strengthened recently so you might not be able to do the same deal. With the mk6 gti out but no V6 golf being made i expect the pattern has shifted.
At the end of the day though if you car is worth more than the R32 you want i cant see it being a problem!

Yes but the R32 has appreciated by a large amount according to glasses guide and still is, not very many other cars have done this, they have merely caught back up to the price they should have been before the market crash. The lack of a new 'proper' r will strengthen the value further.
-
White i see your sense of thinking but whether or not a dealer would is a different story, they can be a funny breed sometimes! i think it all depends if you get a salesman that is actually on the ball and can see a benefit of changing. The only thing to do is find out first hand mate, give it a go.
When i test drove one i couldn't get enough of the sound either, it was the sound that sold me at the time but it was the pace that didn't. It just felt very slow!!
-
You'd be buying it for the love, as they're slow and handle like a cathedral - I doubt you'd be wanting to mod it if you're only keeping it a while.
Wait for the M3.

Exactly! No mods, just 3-4 months of enjoyment and ownership - 3-4 months is enough. I agree with all that's been said, I'd get bored/frustrated of it. To be honest, I've never been overwhelmed by it when I've driven it before, but there's just something about the car. Similar feeling that I have with the M3, but not as strong! I plan to keep the M3 for a couple of years.

They handle quite well mate, well set up suspension and haldex means you can put round corners and exit very quickly. Im no where near good enough a driver to worry the car on a corner :ashamed:
Not sure why everyone says they are slow? Its no super car but sub 6 secs to 60 isnt slow is it
I think it depends what your are use to, it still feels quick to me :sad1:
-
Don't get me wrong, they're special and have a naughty charm all of their own, so the speed/dynamics aren't everything.
I'd worry about the market come Feb/March when it gets flooded and prices drop again, you may get stung??

Oh dear :sad1:
All cars have done this in the last year, but only because they fell on their arse in Dec 2008! Glasses guide has never been more so than it is now, the used car market is in a bit in turmoil at the moment, and in the last 4 weeks has slowed considerably(more so than it usually does this time of year). Mark my words, normal depreciation will appear in the new year. The R or any other car will all suffer from it, you speak about it like its a RS model, sold in limited number, IT ISNT!, and has always played 2nd fiddle to the GTI, the MKIVR32 is the more special model, albeit quite dated now.
Back OT, the GTI is more nimble and more fun to drive, even though it ONLY has 2WD, I should know Ive owned 2 MKV GTIs and a MKV R32 and a MKIV R32 - The R's make a great noise especially with Milltek and are a very, very safe and easy drive, but I just find the GTI more fun.
Will you be able to swap it at a main dealer - probably, but why don't you sell your on pistonheads, and go in armed with cash, probably a better deal to be had. And IF you have to scratch that itch then do it, but you will not be depreciation proof, as previously suggested, this has only been possible due to the recent trends. Oh and if you do, Milltek MUST be your second port of call, second to the petrol station of course, they are a thirsty beast!
Enjoy :happy2:

They don't - but they can with a simple ARB change and an uprated Haldex controller, you need to be able to use the arse end to compensate for the big lump up front. They can be really fun when they're right though :happy2:
Slow compared to his, not in general.

I have been checking prices everyday as i will be selling mate and have watched R32 prices rocket up quicker than alot of others such as the cooper s (a very strongly priced car)
Im well aware of market patterns and am sure the 32 will hold its value. No its not an RS, that will most likely have a similar car in a few years with a similar engine and set up massively decreasing the 2nd hand value, the golf will never have a V6 again

I didn't say it was slow, i said it felt slow . I think the power delivery is just very smooth so it doesn't give the effect that your going for it if that makes sense.
-
Yeah i know what you mean. I would have liked a remap to give a little more punch higher up if i was keeping it. I think the noise makes you think you are doing about 300mph as well but your only going 40 :signLOL:
-
You just dont get it do you - Now get back to your check out, what you know, and Ill do the same, and stick to the motortrade!
A quick lesson, just because cars are put up for sale at a particular price, doesn't mean they sell at that. You have been only monitoring R32s, believe me the whole market has been the same, the R has rocketed so much because it crashed so much - you could buy a brand new one in 2008 for 18k! Oh and Cooper S's have always been strong, as have all mini's.
Hopefully when you've sold it, you will get out of your 'R32's are best bubble'(or will it then be the Mini Cooper S bubble) and have a sensible forum chat with people. You just take everything as a personal jibe, when the R is mentioned!
And just because its the last V6, doesn't actually make it any much better than a four pot, like I said, its not like the RS4, which will be the last V8 RS model.
:happy2:
-
Calm down mate. I have been helpful to the OP, you shouldnt get offended so easily.
-
:P ha ha offended

:P ha ha offended
Quite a rant you went off on, insults about my job was uncalled for as well. I have been quite different on this forum recently as others will be aware of im sure, so your post is completely unnecessary.
-
:congrats: no rant, you just took offence as I stated :drinking:
EDIT - Sorry whiteGTI for the slight OT :happy2:, just making sure the facts are known
-
need i say more  my old one
-
Now thats a great sounding exhaust
-
Chris if you can do as you wish without it costing you money then go for it! I enjoyed every mile in my .:R but my god they are far thirstier than any GTI so be prepared for that.
As for the slow fast bollox I can sum it up pretty easily for you. You will be amazed at the way the thing takes of from a standstill, hell the damn thing nearly broke my back a few times pulling out whilst turning!!
But then there's the mid range punch that you will miss dearly! Without the turbo there is just no get up and go once your on the move! :happy2:
Oh and if you get one you MUST go non-res with the zorst!!
:drinking:
-

....The Haldex switch really transforms the Mk5 R32 - Race setting is best. Haldex is NOT true 4WD - It changes the front to rear balance in driven wheels. That and an exhaust will really make the car feel much more alive. It's not a slow car at all but doesn't feel as nimble or spirited as a mk5 GTI, let alone an Ed30.
I seriously considered trading my GTI against a new Mk5 R32 when it came out and was lent one and did some back-to-back test drive comparisons on exactly the same routes. I adored the V6 but found myself needing to enter licence losing territory to fully enjoy it - The R32 just doesn't feel as fast as the turbo'd GTI.

What he said :pomppomp:, if you've got the itch go and scratch it, you'll only be disappointed with the higher Car Tax and it's thirst for go-go juice. :drinking: The V6 growl is to die for and it rev's cleanly all the way to the red line too, unlike my old V6 2.5 Vectra which felt as though it had asthma...
Oh and go for the MK5, the MKIV is a harder and noiser ride plus trying to find a nice one will also take time, but may see you get some cash your way, VW refined the MKV so it feels softer and quieter, but the non res exhuast on the MK5 is a lot noiser than the MKIV.
They are both fab runners and I've loved/love both of mine.. :happy2:
Good luck by the way...

Yes.

Yup
(not mine but gives you an idea)

With all due respect Chris... Why are you asking on here? Why don't you just phone round some dealers and try and play them off each other? Tell them you've heard of direct swaps before and see what they say. You could try appealing to their wallets too, and offer to take out the minimum finance possible. They get their comission for selling a financial product and shifting a car that is fast becoming very unpopular and hard to sell. Then you settle the finance as early as you are allowed to and only take a tiny hit with the interest.
Colbornes in Guildford have always got R32's on their forecourt - because they are hard to shift! They had two Ed30s last weekend too which doesnt happen very often.
You don't get if you dont ask, worst they can say is no.
-
Come on Chris, let's hit some dealerships at the weekend
-
Yup
(not mine but gives you an idea)
Havent got ENOUGH time to watch that eventually hit 60  (JUST JOKING!!!! Before i get set apon by the R Bouncers )
Good luck choosing your next wagon chris. Perhaps an Ed30?? if your think Golf route?

Not interested in another Golf Steve, just fancied an R because of the noise and 4x4 for the winter months until i get the M3! No point getting an ED30 because i wouldn't mod it because I'd only be keeping it for 4 months max! You see?
Thanks for the advice all, will go to a dealer soon and enquire perhaps.

Make sure you do the flapper mod mate
The exhaust is restricted by a valve/flap until you reach a certain speed when it opens up (something to do with noise regs i think) Makes a huge difference on start up and casual acceleration.
A mk4 but you get the idea
All you is pull off a tube and plug it up, easy to put back if and when you like in 1 min :drinking:

if your only planning on short term an ed 30 imo is a bad idea cause in jan when the R arrives ed 30 values will come down yopu mark my word

That black box next to the battery contains fuses and electrical cabling, the MKV R32 is similar but has NO battery. It's in the boot floor. See Jules pic. :happy2:

Something to do with the haldex maybe?
