Hi,
I had a few leaks on my engine, around fuel pump, and rocker cover gasket along with the egr valve leaking, went to a few mechanics they all wouln't look at the car until I had my engine bay washed, so I took their stupid advice and went to get my engine bay washed, I was assured they'd done this hundreds of times and nothing happens, they cleaned the bay and engine etc, so far so good.
I get home, my car seems to be idling around 1100rpm, which is very odd, and my coolant temp CEL light had disappeared, and everytime I turned the engine on the car would rev to 2000 rpm then settle back down to 1100rpm, now all this with no CEL, took it to a local mechanic they pulled the MAF plug said water might have gotten in, so they pulled it, still no CEL, they said let it dry, and come back tomorrow.
On the way home the car still pulled like a train so I thought im sure its just some electrical fault that should be sorted, next thing you know, loud pop noise, and bellows of smoke out of my engine and the turbo pipe was being compressed in as if it was being sucked, this was when I realised my turbo had basically blown, the RAC came checked all boost pipes and finally jacked the car and felt that all the fins in the turbo were basically broken and the turbo had suffered catastrophic failure, sure the car is mapped and is on around 150k with original turbo but all this on the day that I had the engine bay washed for the first time ever?
The fault codes which came up were Glow plug circuit cylinder 2 and that was it, my coolant temp didn't come up even though it was there before?
My car now starts, but I dare not to drive it, it starts and revs to 2000+ rpm before settling at 1100rpm again, and there is no other fault codes...
I know I need a new turbo but what else could have done the damage, quite scared of a big bill!

That's a bit of bad luck. Personally in your position I'd look at replacing the whole engine or a total rebuild, as there is obviously some other issues with your engine. It'll be better to source a lower milage engine (BWA engines are good), with its ECU and wiring loom. If you can get one with all ancilleries or at least with a turbo that's a good start.

OP's engine is diesel. :wink:

Yeah, I knew that... :sad1: My bad! Still, ignoring my lack of reading g, replacing the whole engine still sounds like a safer bet to me, or a rebuild. Rather than fault chase just refresh everything.

Don't Start the engine as the bits of the turbo will be floating about in the pipes and could recirculated back into the engine..If this is the case it will start getting expensive..Get in contact with dark side development as am sure I saw a turbo on there e bay listing to clear of stock

I'll never ever wash a cars engine bay I just wipe the bits you can see.
Wash it steam cleaning? Or just a jet wash

do you guys reckon a new engine block is needed? I mean as son as turbo popped I turned off the engine, it wasn't running long at all, hopefully no bits have gone in, I've sourced a new turbo, and MAF as that was soaked, engine still runs fine although slightly louder than before, as there is no compression in the valves and its running sdi basically I might just look at all the fuses and relays, and all electrical connections, there is no water in the engine so hopefully engine is healthy?

Take the inlet side of end see if there is any metal in there,also you will have to check the intercooler,my turbo went on awesome gti rollers but turned the engine of,it was okay

I'll have to get it on a ramp and look at whats in the pipes, nothing seems to be in the turbo pipes I have taken off, again I'll find out properly when I take off the turbo and see if any of it has broken off, if it's all intact and just seized like I was told, should be okay...but I'm waiting on a turbo in the post atm.
Also, do I need a new oil return line?

I've always been careful when cleaning the engine bay on my golf, but I recently purchased an old Volvo to use for a banger rally and there's actually instructions in the owners' manual for 'Washing engine - recommended annually' :laugh:

Yes rule of thumb when doing a turbo is change the oil feed and also oil and filter

Also check intercooler and pipework to ensure no bits have been caught up inside the intercooler fins.
