I think i have to do mine. How long should it usually take to hit 90.

For the main stat its not so much about how long it takes to hit 90 - warm up is more effected by the inline regulators, its about if once its up to 90 whether it stays there or not.  Once at 90 the needle should never drop.  If your needle drops off 90 once its up to temp then you need to replace the main stat.  If it takes a long time to warm up but once it does the needle stays put you need to do the inline regulator/s.....

Went for a drive to the next village (16km round trip) the coolant temp on polar fis floated between 69 and 73. As i was pulling into the garage the temperature started to increase the gauge is nearly at 90 and polar fis shows 81.

dazza - are your clocks just wrapped?

Don't pay much attention to the actual reading, VCDS reads differently to what the needle shows too.

Just keep your eye on the needle, if you are seeing it dropping off 90 when up to temp then theres a stat issue.

Surely i should be at temp after 16km considering its 20 plus today.

Depends on year of car also as my 57 plate manual has no inline stats only the main which was replaced few months ago and all fine now  :happy2:

Thanks guys any ideas what a 05 AXX DSG will have?

Went for a spin on the motorway it came up to 90 as soon as i put my foot down then dropped off when i coasted down the off ramp.

So by the looks of it the AXX has 2 inline stats with part number 4E0121113. May as well switch both of them out and see if it cures it??
Title: Re: thermostat change
Post by: SkyJawa on April 29, 2015, 03:55:10 pm
Yes mate a 2005 DSG will have 2.

That's what we had done.  Dealer changed the main stat under warranty and that made it stay at 90 once up to temp.  However it still took stupid long to get up to temperature so we had the 2 regulators changed and its now up to temp in a few minutes.
Title: Re: thermostat change
Post by: dazza on April 29, 2015, 04:03:11 pm
So the AXX will still have the main stat behind the alternator which is a pita to replace?
Title: Re: thermostat change
Post by: SkyJawa on April 29, 2015, 05:33:28 pm
Afraid so!  VW quoted 3 hours labour to do it, but luckily was picked up under warranty for us as it was within the used car warranty period.  They wouldn't listen to me about the regulators despite no end of online proof so had to get them done ourselves.  Local indy charged about 150 quid including parts IIRC.

We have the same as yours, 2005 AXX DSG GTI.

It does get to 90 but takes ages and then drops. So if i'm draining the coolant to do the cam belt/water pump i may as well switch out these three as well??

I would mate
Vw quoted me about £300 to do main stat
Good friend who is vag/bmw specialist charged me £130 including parts to do main stat
Said it was a horrible job and he's never doing another

I've been faffing about with the boot build for too long. Going to change the inner CV boot tomorrow and start checking things off my never ending todo list.
