Title: Newbie tyre codes
Post by: Pesky jones on April 21, 2015, 02:15:53 pm
So I looked at my current tyres which give the code 225 40 18 92W XL

The 225 40 18 bit I understand

The 92W XL – is this something I have to look for?

But it’s a different code…

Wil they be ok?

92 is the load index - which means you can have 630 Kg on one wheel.
XL - extra load - tyres are designed to be used at higher pressures than normal tyres, they have also a stiffer sidewall.
W - is the speed rating - means they are good for max 168 MPH or 270 KMH.

Sorry, can you elaborate?

92 is the load index - which means you can have 630 Kg on one wheel.
XL - extra load - tyres are designed to be used at higher pressures than normal tyres, they have also a stiffer sidewall.
W - is the speed rating - means they are good for max 168 MPH or 270 KMH.

Brilliant, cheers for the info

I think it's Y that is recommended for the GTI. Then again, you might not reach the speed of 168mph from the W specs.

Apologies Pesky. Just double checked. I have ZR18 XL 92Y (MO)

Hahaha I'll come home one day to find my registration plate missing won't I?!

There's actually a kid who bought some old badges off me a while back who's stalking my car! I was home for the first time in a month last night and I can see out the window around 8pm. He drove up and parked outside staring at it for a few minutes before driving off. He wants to buy it but I won't sell it. Not sure if I should be flattered or installing another alarm!haha

That's pretty weird. Where the badges he bought for a GTI as well? Not surprising, from your threads its apparent you look after it!

Hmm ok, that code is in a different format isn't it... I think the ones I'm looking at will fit, its just the Y/W thing that's getting me. I don't know why the previous owner fitted Ws if he didn't need to.
