Title: speed rating invalidate insurance?
Post by: Pesky jones on April 24, 2015, 03:44:43 pm
Car went into for a recall today. As others may know, that when the car goes into a VW garage they do a health check on it (free :D). Anyway, my health check told me that my tyres were the wrong speed rating and that might/would invalidate my insurance. The tyres on them atm are W’s which are rated up to 168mph. Apparently they should be Y’s. My car is never going to reach 168 – so why is it going to invalidate my insurance?

As it happens I’m having the rears swapped tomorrow for new ones which are Y’s. Not the full set however, should I get the fronts swapped as well?

2 of Mine are W mate all Michelin ps3's but 2 are Y and 2 are W
If it was so important why are winter tyres rated at H which is something like 128mph!

IIRC, you can use winter tyres with a lower speed rating and this is stipulated into almost all insurance policies when I looked into it a year or so ago - I use V rated ~150mph iirc (which exceeds the standard cars top end).
However, other than that (and the spare wheel use) the rating has to meet Specification (Y ~186mph), mental, but there you are.

I'm not 110% on those details, it's just what I remember... best way is to ask your insurance company. :happy2:
