Morning!
First post so be gentle. Looking at a Mk5 GTI today. Absolutely gully loaded DSG - but without paddle shift, I've seen I can put a new steering wheel with paddles shifts on, but exactly what work is needed?
What else should I be looking for, its a 2005 GTI has SatNav Xenon's sunroof and on pretty decent milage - 77k.
Thank you and hi!!

DSG and no paddle shifter on the steering wheel? Sounds off to me... Sounds like the steering wheel has been swapped or something but its enough to make me think whoever owned/worked on it didn't really know what they were doing.

This. Too many of these are 'fiddled' with.

What about if it was an early dsg and the paddles weren't spec'd on the car in the first place?
-
Early '05 DSGs didn't come with paddles - it was an optional extra. Mine came without paddles.
I've since added paddles to mine. You'll probably need a new wheel controller, new wheel and some coding in VCDS. A new slip ring may also be required depending on the one currently in the car.
-
As mentioned the early gti didn't have paddle shifts, don't let this put you of
-
Didn't let it put me off. Was a great drive and put a deposit down. Needs a couple of bits doing on it - but to be expected on a car of that age. Really excited!!
-
nice one--will look forward to the pics when you get it
-
Pick it up at some point this week. Will need the how to guide of how to the paddles!!
-
Sounds similar to mine. Dsg but no paddles. Against an early GTI.
Enjoy it and definitely change dv, pcv and cam follower of not done.
Also if it does have main dealer service history ring them up and ask them what work/ recalls have been done on the car.
To my surprise even though there was no receipt for it the dsg oil and filter had been changed which was a bonus.
-
as above change the dv, pcv, and cam follower. treat it to a nice service to.
enjoy it. :happy2:

Well you learn something everyday! Get a mk6 multi function steering wheel with the right corner if you're going to upgrade. :happy2:

Thanks all. Yes very much looking forward to it! The Mk6 wheel will be on my list of things to do. Also there is a little rust on the wing - which after some digging found is often repaired under warranty for free!
Exited to have something quick again!
-
Careful, the wing isn't warranty so don't go guns blazing. Its done as a good will gesture by VW as they admitted a design flaw. Ask nicely and you should get it all done free, worst case you'll need a 50% contribution to labour.
