Hi all.
Ill be dropping the oil in a month or so, and it got me thinking.
Shall I take off the sump and check the oil pick up pipe just for peace of mind? Is there any point in doing it, or should I just cross my fingers and hope that I dont see a OIL warning light on the dashboard or worse?
Should I check it? Then clean it? or replace it?
Cheers.
Rich

If you are thinking about it, then do it.
It was always a mild concern for me when I had the ED30 though I know mine had a new sump pan the year before I bought it.
-
I say go for it. Lately I've seen a lot of threads on this matter!
Here's a video of it - http://blog.micksgarage.com/project-gti-oil-strainer-cleaning/
-
I've also been thinking about doing this.
-
I've also been thinking about doing this.
Just need to make sure we have the right tools to get to the awkward sump bolts. :signLOL:
-
Long allen keys with the wobble end or wobble bit on your extension. Bit awkward but a straighforward job. Hopefully it's nice and clean but may aswel put your ramps to use and get it checked :)
-
So only replace it, if its full of crap?? Or replace anyway seeing as the sump is off?
-
Might as well replace it while the sump is off. I did mine for peace of mind recently. The pick up was dirty but not full of crud.
The whole job took about 4 hrs, awkward bolts as mentioned. I also spent time really cleaning out the sump. No real sludge but some hard baked scale.
The latest pick up pipe is supposed to be better than the original. Not sure I could see much difference though.
You will need a new o ring gaket and some of the special silicone for the sump. I bought VW stuff at enormous cost! I still have half a tube you can have for postage if you PM me.
-
If you've got the time the pickup pipe will clean up as good as new but your best refitting with a new Oring.
Just make sure you've got some good quality cleaning rags, degreaser and cardboard to do the cleaning job on,this will allow a simple tidying up after cleaning the parts down if your working on your drive!

That would be great @OSB (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=6802) thanks :happy2:

Rich I wrote a guide that tells you exactly what you need and the cost, under £100 all in.

Going to get cracking on this soon.
Do i also need to replace the Turbo oil line gasket 058145757A??
-
I didn't, just a teeny bit of the same sealant i put on the sump.
no leaks.
wouldnt hurt though.
-
Its well worth doing, even as preventative maintenance as if the dreaded "STOP OIL PRESSURE" warning comes on, it's a tow back to somewhere for repair.
I have the perfect allen key for the job, it's out of an IKEA furniture pack at some point haha! There's nothing special about it. it's just a 5mm long ball ended allen key, something like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9PC-BALL-END-HEXAGONE-KEY-HOLDER-SET-SHORT-WRENCH-ALLEN-HEX-KEYS-1-5MM-10MM-/131399496622?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1e980533ae

Feel like i've wasted my time with this one. :sad1:
Pickup pipe looks ok.
Should i give it a clean where it is? or remove it and give it a clean out? Or replace?

definately take it out and clean it, the gauze goes all the way to the edges and crud sits around the edges, ideal soak in fuel and blast out (backwards and forwards) with airline very well over some clean rag / blue roll so you can see what come out.
the final part is the most important - refitting the sump, put bare minimum sealant on the sump and let it go off a little before refitting, too much and it'll squeeze out of the joint back into the sump undoing all of your good work. :happy2:
-
Dont have air line or any fuel. Maybe will pick a new one up from the stealers. If i do clean it should i change the rubber seal??
-
may as well while you're there, for peace of mind
-
I've ordered a new pipe.
A few questions.
2 of the 3 bolts going from gearbox to sump are corroded. Should i replace them? If so anyone got any ideas of the part number?

Had a dig about in the old pick up pipe there was a bit of crud in it.

Also found this. Any ideas what it could be.

The sump looks pretty good this is how it looks after a wipe out with tissue.
Don't know if i need to resort to brake cleaner??

I'd replace those bolts, sorry, I dont know part numbers though.
The bit - is it metal or cork? Looks like a bit of old gasket or something.
I'd clean the sump out as much as possible, it can't harm and it's only a few quid for some brake cleaner :)
-
Funny enough i had an almost identical piece like that in my pickup when i changed it, it was lodged to the side of the opening, out of sight initially. Never did figure where it came from... Sure it was metal though but it was a while ago.
I also had a few shards of plastic that had fallen off the dipstick at some point in the past. A worthwhile piece of maintenance for any TFSI owner, even if just for peace of mind.

I'm off the stealers now hopefully they can find the part number for the bolts.
The piece is metal. I'm also going to add a magnetic sump plug be interesting to see what it picks up over the next year.

Thanks mate that makes me feel better.
-
Daz. What sump plug is it? Link?
-
Interested in sump plug too - I remember reading about them a while back (generic ones), some people said they leaked...
-
I just bought a really strong magnet and stuck it to the end of my sump plug (externally) - More than does the job :signLOL:
-
What happens if it comes off? :scared:
-
it's EXTERNAL - i.e. not in the sump
-
Oops. Sorry, I missed that bit. :signLOL:
Neodymium magnet? And that works well yeah?
-
I bought it from opie oils
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-83967-gold-plug-ap08-magnetic-oil-drain-sump-plug-for-volkswagen-vehicles-ap-08.aspx
Anyone know the torque for the bolt holding the pickup pipe??
-
Anyone know the torque for the bolt holding the pickup pipe??
Id just go for tight. Cant imagine its that critical, as its not subject to any great force.

Magnetic sump plug installed.

My arms were a bit numb after 6 test fits of the sump. I managed to get a thinner line as i went on.

Sump is in bolts torque to 15nm??
When my arms recover i will finish it off.

lovely :happy2:

Just bought some 15x5mm neodymium magnets to make a mag. sump plug... see if it works.
-
Did you move your boost pipe clip @dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457) or is it loose?

The boost pipe clip is disconnected and i used a bungee to keep the pipe out of the way.
-
All good info cheers for the share
-
Went for a quick spin. No leaks at the moment.
Thanks for all your help guys. Onto the cam belt now.

Ive had the ECS mag plug fitted for some time. Maybe lining the whole of the bottom of the sump with neodymiun magnets will do a good job haha

Seems a good idea but won't the magnetism pass through to the sump ? Where as the other plugs are insulated against the internal magnet. Will be interesting to see results

Good point...... might have to rethink :signLOL:

Was just looking at buying some magnets when I thought about it :sad1:
-
Yeah.... might also dissipate the magnetic power as well, instead of it being concentrated on the "tip.
Just gonna buy a mag. plug. Then if it picks up some stuff ill drop the sump next service.
-
How can it possibly be insulated against magnetism? Last time i checked my sump wasn't magnetic anyway so bit of an invalid argument  Home made magnetic sump plug does the job perfectly for a fraction of the posh one
Yeah.... might also dissipate the magnetic power as well, instead of it being concentrated on the "tip.
Why not see how powerful the magnetism is at the tip of the bolt? Mine was pretty strong

Hardly an invalid argument, the fact I made an enquriey. Unfortunately I have neither a magnet or sump in my lounge to check, hence why I mention my thought.
If thats the case then great, I'll get some magnet and get them on the sump plug.
-
It should still work even if the sump is magnetised bits of metal held there will be flushed out when you drop the oil.
-
Thats true... the sump is aliminium.... bollocks. Ill have to stick them back on again! :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL:
