Title: monza 2 cracked lacquer
Post by: tommy1 on December 07, 2009, 09:38:28 pm
Hello one and all,

after washing my car the other day, i noticed a missing chunk of lacquer about the size of my small fingernail on the dish of my wheels (not sure if thats what you call the recesses). it has taken the slightly darker paint with it which is annoying, but i will be ok with it as long as they don't start to corrode...

is there anything that can be done to stop them from corroding or the peal spreading? i thought about applying some clear lacquer over the top... anyone had this problem? other than that the wheels are mint so, deff not time for a referb

Cheers

Tommy

Same thing happened with mine, I just dotted a bit of lacquer on and left it to dry thoroughly for a week. Wet sanded it back and mopped over it to flatten it out.

You wouldn't be able to notice it unless you were told about it. Do what ever your comfortable with dude  :happy2:.

Like snapey says, it's definitely worth touching up if you're comfortable doing so. But keep a very, very watchfull eye on all your Monza's with Winter and the road salt gremlins coming. You can't really arrest the white worm's progress once it has started.

Wouldn't be able to tell you the specific brand etc. My dad owns a body shop so I just took some of the lacquer he used on all of his customers cars and dropped a bit in a pot.

As long as its a clear drying lacquer you'll be alright dude.

for anyone interested in repairing a crack in the lacquer, i would recomend doing this:

rub back the paint with 1200 grit wet and dry
apply 5 thin coats of clear lacquer, job is a gud-un!

just so you know...

It's the chips which cause the problems - The lacquer seal gets broken and the dreaded white worm starts. That's why I powdercoated my Monza 18's.
