Title: Should I sell my edition 30 for an R32
Post by: Bish155 on May 25, 2015, 08:39:44 am
I love the edition 30 I bought just over a month ago, but my mate has an R32 and I just can't help but love the sound of that thing. I have mainly had bmw's before owning the edition 30 and they have all been either 3ltr straight sixes or 3ltr twin turbo's so the engine has been very good on the ear.

I don't know if I should keep my gti now or sell it and get an R32?

Get a couple of choice mods, a BCS exhaust and a stage 2 map and watch your buddy in the mirror as you sail into the sunset, that should make you feel better :innocent:

Thanks for the reply, it's already quicker than his! It also has a pipeworx down pipe and sports cat on soon to be mated to a non resonated milltek, hopefully that will make it sound a bit better.

They sound great but they're just not for me, the power delivery is very linear and with 4WD there's hardly any punch to it. If your after a fun car stick with the ED30, the only reason I'd buy an R32 is if I really wanted 4WD or planned to turbo it at some point otherwise its not worth it.

No.
R32 is no faster than a stock ed30 and much less mpg. Only benefit is the noise.

vast majority of R32 will cost £500 a year in road tax also

Going of your previous car history you will like the noise of the r32 but will start wanting more power out of it...Stick with the ed30 and change the exhaust

This old topic rearing it's head again

As said above
What does the R32 have in its favour except making a decent noise!

Twice the road tax, half the Mpg as weighs nearly as much as the moon and in the real world no quicker than even a normal standard Gti let alone a edition30 plus with the Gti you get the huge following of a cult soon to be 40 year old hot hatch still being produced something the R32 or even the mk6/7R will never have

4wd would certainly be handy but the R32 doesn't need it as its too slow anyway
Personally id cry everytime a normal Gti left me standing with nothing more than a £300 remap  :rolleye: :driver:

For nearly aslong as the gti has been around their has has been a 'hotter' golf, just not always under the name 'R'.

R32s get a lot of stick on here but they are still good cars, to some it's not always about who has a quicker car at the end of the day there is always someone with a faster car regardless of what you drive.

Honestly couldn't disagree more mate
The R32 is mundane and lathargic!

friend of a friend has a stunning low mileage 32, just find its missing the zest and excitement you get from the GTI's

Ask your mate if he'll let you have a test drive in his and then make your mind up. Contrary to popular belief their fuel consumption isn't that bad unless you drive around like a bell-end with your right foot welded to the floor. They do sound great and 4WD is handy, high road tax isn't ,and if you get one that needs mechanical repairs be prepared to wave goodbye to your bank balance.

I've currently got a R32, but have also had an Ed30, I loved my Ed30 but the R32 is a great car, does have its bad points, high tax, mpg around town, expensive to mod. but every time I drive it puts a massive grin on my face. That noise  and they are fantastic off the line in the wet, and as others have said they are dripping in soul.
I would highly recommend both cars to anyone  :happy2:

I've previously owned a 3.2 Audi TT and the noise levels are awesome (I know it's not the same as the R32). That was brilliant to drive in all weather conditions. I wish my current GTi produced that kinda noise - I'd be happy.

My GTi is currently in standard form and I'm enjoying it as it's fun to drive, however, it does lack that grunt.

Booked in for a stage 1 remap from R-Tech in a couple of weeks. Hopefully that should up the fun levels. Not sure if I will be doing much else to it after that.

I like both cars in their own special ways and if I could afford both I'd buy one of each. To me it's not all about speed and bhp - it's how the car feels and drives and if it makes you smile  :happy2:

Having owned a mk5 GTI, mk6 R, and mk5 R32.. my favourite all-rounder is the R32.

The engine just has so much torque available at pretty much any point on the rev scale. The mk6 R gave me a few frights when approaching roundabouts in the wrong gear, no such problem with the 3.2 lump.

Real world MPG isn't far off the mk6 R - I average 29mpg on the commute to work on mixed roads, compared to 30.5 in the mk6.

The R32 is nowhere as quick to 100 70 as the R, but it just does it with so much more character, silky smooth and sounding like something much more exotic. It really is one of the best N/A engines I've experienced.

My GTI was mapped to approx 240 bhp, but the R32 just feels much more grown up, and is no slouch when it comes to overtaking. To each their own  :drinking:
