Title: Removing stains from steering wheel
Post by: oak_grun on May 25, 2015, 02:56:03 pm: Hi, what's the best way to clean a leather steering wheel? I've tried leather wipes just now and the section of the wheel looks worse! I think it's other half make up tbh, not that she has admitted it! Lol..

Really annoying? Don't want to ruin or make it any worse?

Any ideas, hints or tips guys and gals?

I saw a thing a while back on wrapping a warm damp towel around the wheel to soften the leather. Clean vigorously and then seal again but I never tried it so can't speak from experience.

I've also seen some people say that you should use leather conditioner on the wheel because it's a different type of leather.

I personally clean the crap out of it with leather wipes and damp microfiber and then re-condition once every few months and mine looks great.

This stuff is really abbrasive and will remove the protective clear coat and remove the dye from your leather, as with plastics.

Took a bit of time and effort, but the results are pretty amazing. There were deep scratches - not far off rips - and they're no long visible.

(I got carried away, and restored the VW badge in the middle with Autosol - make sure you cover the black sections if you go this far.)

Post by: DrG_GTi on May 28, 2015, 10:50:43 pm: I used the exact same kit as cpk, although my mfsw was in poor condition so needed a restore. It does take a little work and you need to apply the paint and top coat thinly and dry with a heat source, just use the matt coat, but it all worked a treat and comes up as new. I may have made it a bit black compared to oem but I'd rather that than too grey, so never mixed any white in!
