Cant wait to pick it up in a few weeks and start modding. What should i do first??
Thanks

Coilovers and a remap! :driver:
-
welcome and nice car,
would suggest brakes (r32), air filter (pipper cross panel filter or revo intake), precat delete and remap :happy2:
-
Check if your insurance will cover you with mods you have planned.
-
Thanks for the replies.
What is involved in the pre cat delete?
Also anyone know where the best place is to get hold of the interior door handles?? The driver a passenger ones will need replacing as they are pretty scratched.

Get them direct from VW parts. Must actually add them with part number into my build thread - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,89715.msg907250.html#msg907250

Maintenance first:
-cam follower
- PCV
then power
- pre-cat delete
-remap :driver:

Ive read through some threads about the DV. Which versions are you guys running? I hear 'g' is the best one for standard??
Many thanks

DSG should be done every 40k.
Cam follower is easy to do, there's a guide on here, it's not down as a serviceable item.
Rev G is the latest DV.
-
Thanks @AndyBrown (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10128) Is it easy enough to do or should i see a specialist? (reagrding the DSG service)
Is it worth fitting the Rev g??
-
I'd take it to the dealers or vag specialist personally as it's not as simple as old oil out new oil in.
Not 100% on the methods but the oil needs to be measured to replace the correct amount and/or they will use vcds to sort the levels.
I haven't changed my DV as I've had I issues, should probably check it really.
-
A friend of mine was looking for this very same spec. Good purchase!
If your loosing power diverter valve is the first place I would go and throttle issues could be PCV. Mine had both about a year in after buying mine and both of them I changed myself (PCV is the easiest out of the lot of the parts).
Cam follower is next on my list once I've got my car back from the body shop :happy2:
-
Ok cool. I'll have a check when I pick the car up.
This question may be slightly odd. I have seen lots of different induction kits on gtis but I was wondering if you have to have a special engine cover or do some of the kits fit with the old engine cover??
I'm currently unsure whether to get a ramair induction kit or a pipercross panel filter.

You can either...
1. Modify the existing cover
2. Get one from a TT RS
3. Do without
I've got a K&N panel filter in mine. Didn't notice much difference. Tempted by Ramair kit myself.
-
Thanks dave.
Yeah seen a ramair kit for £154 on flea bay.
Not going to lie I kinda like the engine cover atm. Keeps everything looking neat.
Any idea what's involved to modify it?
-
Another question.... What sort of price am I looking at for the cam follower?? Am I best off getting it from the dealer??
Really can't wait to pick the car up now. Just want to drive it. :happy2:
-
Got mine off ebay

-
Awesome stuf thanks. Just purchased it. Had a flick through your build thread. Gave me some good ideas. Nice car!
-
So ive got a small collection of parts already and i havent even got the car yet. haha
This is getting addictive.
Keep looking at so much and wanting to buy soo much.
Anyone got any recommendations for for springs? have been looking at H&R's.
thanks again
:driver:
-
So I picked my car up yesterday morning amd my god I'm in love. Such a nice drive and the grin I get when I put my foot down is emence.
Got the mod bug though. Looking at a ram air induction kit at the minute and looks like I'm definitely going to do the pre cat delete.
One happy lad right now :driver: :happy2:

Hey guys,
Its been a while but thought i would give a little update.
Recently fitted the Polo aerial, makes the car look so much better. Also changed the cam follower, didn't look too bad but glad i changed it. At least i can forget about it for a while.
Need to do a DSG oil change. Anyone got any idea on how much this costs?
Ordered a Pipercross air filter aswell. Will hopefully fit at the weekend.
Will post pics up soon.
I have a question about exhausts. What bits have people changed on them?? Backbox?? centre section? etc.
Also thinking about doing a precept delete. Any ideas on how long this takes?? Looks fairly simple.
Thanks.
Any advice or help welcome.
-
hi all,
Little update.
Pipercroos air filter is now installed, can't tell if its made any difference but the old one was pretty dirty so I'm glad i changed it.
Looking at buying and MFD2 nav unit off one of the guys on here. Guessing its just a straight plug n play swap with the RCD300 that i currently have.
Fitted led's in my sidelights and rear number plates. Look really good at night. Will post some pics up when it gets dark.
Also purchased some PoorBoys Black hole wax for my car. Yet to arrive yet but hopefully will help remove some of the swirl marks you can see on my paintwork.
Looking to get the following done at some point:
1. MFD2
2. Colour code rear bumper and side skirts
3. Change the colour of my wheels (looking at anthracite maybe)
4. Remap (unsure who by yet but possibly looking at Revo)
5. Cat back exhaust system (up for debate)
6. DSG gearbox oil change
Thanks for reading.
Any help tips etc please feel free to comment :happy2:
-
just a little update.
Haven't done much recently.
Brought some Poor Boys Black hole to use whilst cleaning the car and what a difference it makes to the cars shine. Its great for hiding the notorious swirl marks of a black car.
Also had a little spend on some H&R 30mm springs. Should have them fitted some time this week.
-
So i got my springs fitted last night.
All went pretty well until i went to drive off the ramp, my cv joint had popped off.
After an hour we managed to get the driveshaft back together, however now its knocking so I'm gonna have to fit a new one.

No before use shots as i forgot to take one but most of you know the standard ride height.
Here some after shots taken today. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll191%2Fsmithers692%2FIMG_1951_zpsfjecidge.jpg&hash=865d486fa0761fface77f4e76539efcbce66b253)(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll191%2Fsmithers692%2FIMG_1950_zpslrmnvk7n.jpg&hash=36ffc1a76790d3907ba88ae25889fc77b762f91f)
Ride is pretty much the same but there is less body roll when your going around corners.
When changing the front springs I found that removing the hub assembly and strut together was a lot easier than just removing the strut.
Looking forward to see how she sits once fully settled.

So weird you say that as I put some h&r 30 mm on last week and now mines knocking at slow speeds while turning and also if I hit a slight bump while driving there seems to be a slight knock.
Looks good man

That is very strange.
I know my passenger side popped out completely as once done i had no drive and a grinding noise.
When i checked the knuckle had come completely apart. my mate is pricing up a new cv for me tomorrow.
Hoping thats what it is, if not could be drop link for the ARB. ill see if i can have a look at my ARB.

Hi guys.
Had my new CV joint fitted yesterday. I am pleased to report that most of the knocking has now gone.
However, there is still a slight knock when turning in either direction at slow speeds. Can anyone shed any light??
Thanks

Hi guys.
Small update. I had a dension gateway lite BT in my Audi so I contacted dension and got a replacement cable to connect to the golf.
Fitted the kit this morning and I have to say it's much easier to do in the golf than the Audi.
Great sound quality when streaming music from my iPhone and the voice calls are very clear.

You get the knocking sorted at slow speeds? Mines still bloody doing it haha.
Had my trusted mechanic take a look and he's pretty sure he knows what it is...(the spring diameter) basically he said he has seen it once before and its basically the spring moving slightly in its holder/cup when being turned at slow speed. I haven't got a clue but he's pretty confident he can sort it next week by putting some rubber insulation on the ends of the coil of the springs.
anyway no idea if it will work but worth a shot as its not costing me anything. Was just curious of you'd had any luck? If not Il report back how mine goes
-
Hi mate.
No luck yet. I'm gona get the car on a ramp at work next week. I think it may be subframe bolts. It doesn't knock when on a 2 post ramp and the wheels are at full sag so I'm gona try on my 4 post ramp at work and get someone to turn the wheel whilst I'm under it.
If you could let me know that would be great.
I'll update if I find anything.

Hi guys it's been a while.
A couple of weeks ago I was hit by a foreign lorry so my car is in the garage for repair. Car needs a new wing, door, tyre, wheel refurb and a new mirror. A massive annoyance but atleast nobody was hurt.

hey guys.
Haven't posted in a couple of weeks due to being busy with christmas etc.
Last night i spent a long time reading through @MateyGuv (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7486) build thread. Was an excellent read and gave me a big kick in the butt to get more mods done even if they are subtle and nobody may know they are even there.
Here's a link to his build thread: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,69555.0.html Great read!
So today i got a few things done that I've been wanting to do for a while. Please excuse the dirty car. :ashamed:
Changed my hazard switch to a cherry red one. £4 or so from ebay. very easy to install, there are a lot of guides on here on how to remove the centre console. only takes around 10-15 mins.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll191%2Fsmithers692%2FIMG_2310_zpsr51wymku.jpg&hash=32c4a86c92c6b69997677cd8846dd742dcb8116d)

Also got my seat inserts fitted. They definitely add a little something.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll191%2Fsmithers692%2FIMG_2312_zpsqtu8xz0p.jpg&hash=d17a080ec89e1f9bac6de851e84a24788c1e3455)
And not to everyones taste but added a set of Team Heko wing deflectors. I dunno why i do this to all my car but i like them. :jump move:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fll191%2Fsmithers692%2FIMG_2313_zpsyda1sxag.jpg&hash=10356156d98c917790669609f640d3f3a3d268f0)

Im also hoping to collect a Ramair induction kit off one of the guys on here so ill show photos etc of installing that when i get it. I will also give a review on it as i know a lot of people say that they are losing torque low down once fitted.
I have also got a pair of Vibe slick 6c component speakers to install. Any ideas on what kind of mounting rings to use would be great. :happy2:

So this morning I picked up the ramair induction kit from @tommy2478.
I was umming and arrring about fitting it today but after some breakfast I decided I would do it.
It was pretty easy to install. Old air box and engine cover came out pretty quick and the induction kit went in pretty easy.
Heat shield fitted. Looks pretty smart imo.

Took it for a test drive once fitted and I like it
. Turbo noise is fairly loud but it doesn't bother me too much. I can also say I haven't noticed much if any drop in low end torque.
Anyways thanks for reading. Comments as always welcomed

After some opinions, Ive been thinking about possibly changing my lipstick and brake calipers to yellow. anyone seen this done so i can see what it looks like or can anyone do some photoshop work on a black gti?
Thanks
I've seen a Pirelli edition with it done and it looked wicked! Think he had 4 or 6 pots in front though which helped :)
-
Did he have dark wheels aswell?? I think that'll help

Personally I like a black gti with yellow lipstick.. Looks different

He had standard Pirelli edition wheels (silver) which IMO look horrid but his is the only car what looks like them wheels belong on it. Really did catch my eye.
Yellow lipstick gets thumbs up from me but leave the VW badge alone!

Haha yeah wasn't going to yellow the vw badge

:surprised: I wasn't expecting you too! Haha a lot of people do them black though and IMO it looks abit chav. I think I've seen that Pirelli with yellow lipstick on Facebook. Possibly the mk5 owners club thing so try there :happy2:

Wicked thanks mate I'll have a look

Hey guys. Still thinking about the yellow lipstick.
Today I done an oil change and fitted the new subframe bolts. Car is still knocking :( had a feel about and it could possibly the track rod ends but not the steering knuckle end, the rack end. Or if not it could be the rack :(

Mine still knocks and dead slow speed ever since the hr 30mm springs installed.
Found another thread on here with 3or 4 other people who all have hr30mm springs having the same problem. I've had new top mounts, the springs looked at track rod ends looked at the lot. Was thinking possibly arb bush or something but they look absolutely fine :sad1:
-
Yeah all of mine are fine. If I grab the wheel whilst it's on a vehicle lift and jiggle side to side you can feel the knock in the track rod. My mate said it could be the end on the track rod that attached to the steering rack :/ might price up the parts and see.

So it's been a while since my last post. A few bits have changed with the car.
The knocking noise is pretty much sorted. The left hand cv joint was shot to s**t managed to get it replaced under warranty from the garage that fitted it originally.
I have also sprayed my front grills and fog surrounds satin black so it looks a lot better imo.
Also removed the gti badge from the rear.
I'll upload pics soon.
Off to the Nurburgring soon. So need to do an oil change, while I'm there I'll probably change the oil pick up. Need to do file filter and spark plugs as well.
As I say I'll upload pics soon.
Thanks for reading

Hi GrahamGti
The car looks great mate, good to see another black gti getting some love. You've pretty much done the same mods as me lol.
Love the satin black grill, i've been tempted to do that myself but i restored my OEM with C4 and the results speak for themselves. Plus I have the diamond cut 18" monzas on mine so now the grill colour matches the wheel inserts as VW originally spec'd.
I discover Poorboys too, what an amazing product that is!! I use nattys paste to seal the car too and the rain just beads and runs off.
I'll be keeping an eye on your progress.
Good work fella

Thanks rippers for your kind words.
I love the black hole product it gives my paint a great look.

Booked in at pipecraft in Basildon at the end of the week to have my centre resonator removed and a pipe welded in place.
Still contemplating a remap before I go to the Nurburgring in a couple of weeks.

Hey guys. Just got back from pipecraft in Basildon. They have just removed my centre resonator and replaced with a straight pipe.
Very very quick and a brilliant job. The car sounds awesome now. Slight drone when accelerating up hill but when cruising at 70 on a flat road the noise is the same as standard. The best bit though is the noise from the dsg farts. Sounds epic.

Another small update.
So tonight I fitted my cold air feed from the fog light grill. Looks good. Going to run live data to see my inlet air temp and after that I'm going to heat wrap my intake and run the data again and see him much difference it makes

Small update time.
My cars now on around 75k so today whilst carrying out the service I decided to replace the oil pickup.
Very simple job to do even without the ball head hex socket. Managed to get on the 2 tricky bolts with a 1/4 drive ratchet and 10mm socket then I used a standard ball head Allen key to remove it the rest of the way. Couldn't see anything in my sump so happy days with that.
The new strainer installed

Lovely build mate :happy2:
I need to do some of the same service items as you...
Can I ask...
1) How hard was the strainer swap? I'm not a mechanic but I do do virtually all the work on the car myself. I'm nervous I will possibly make a balls of re-sealing the sump and end up with it leaking after?? What do you reckon the chances of that are?
2) Did you clean your strainer or replace it??
3) How hard was the fuel filter swap?
Sorry for all the numpty questions :ashamed:
Hope you will have a blast at the ring  :happy2:
-
Thanks man.
1) the strainer swap was easy. If you can undo 23/24 bolts then you've pretty much cracked it. There's a few guides knocking about on here and there's some clips on YouTube if you get completely stuck. Asking as you clean the surface of the block and sump and use a small bead of sump sealant you'll be fine. I sealed mine, bolted it up then left for 20 mins or so before refilling with oil. Then I ran it up for half hour or so. No leaks yet.
2) I've seen some threads saying to just clean the strainer but I just swapped it completely. It's relatively and its just peace of mind.
3) the fuel filter was easy. Just in front of the rear right wheel. 3 pipes and a Philips screw and its off. Pretty easy. The pipes have a lock on them which you have to squeeze/depress then they just pull off. Takes 5-10mins max.
Don't be sorry I'm here to help.
Cannot wait to go. Should be a laugh. I'm going with a few mates. It's Gona be my gti, an e46 m3 and a Megane rs

Hey guys.
Got back from the ring on Wednesday. Have to say I had a wicked time. Only managed to get in 1 lap as my car broke when I got there and took me 2 days to get a new brake caliper so miss out on the TF on the Sunday but managed to get on the track Tuesday evening for a lap. The track got closed as I came up to gantry as a yellow Clio blew its engine and set alight. Thankfully no one was injured.
Will Defo be going back again next year :)

Been watching the old YouTube Nurburgring crash videos :surprised:  :surprised:
They'd put you right off

Haha yeah as I said I was really lucky in a way that they closed the track after I drove on. Only about 9 cars passed me so I had pretty much a clear lap. Still feel a bit gutted for the lad in the clip though. Must be sh*t seeing your pride and joy go up in flames

Did you get a time at all?
Went this year (couldn't use my own car due to it being rubbish) and 2nd lap my mate got a 9mins 59secs. Planning to take my car along next year!
-
Hi mate,
Sorry for the late reply. i didn't log a time. as it was my first lap i just wanted to know where i was going so i was pretty reserved but the go pro was on for around 12 mins. Started it at the ticket office then turned it off once back at the diner. Had to slow down at the end because of the yellow flag.
Little update,
Car is super dirty and needs a good wash. Currently parked near another gti. think it belongs to @Deano45 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=12004) but i could be wrong. His car is so clean it makes mine look like crap. Anyways looking at possibly getting a set of stance+ coilovers and a few other handling mods. Want to get the handling sorted before taking the trip to R-Tech for more power.
Im also thinking about colour coding the side skirts and rear valance. And i most definitely need to do some paint correction but I'm thinking I've left it a bit late as the s**t weather is closing in. Can anyone recommend a good set of cleaning products?? Currently using poor boys black hole but i am in need of a decent clay bar kit and a good product to seal the car with.
As always thanks for reading
-
I use natty's paste wax sealer after poorboys, wipe on buff off, easy. I've seen they now sell one specific for black cars now too.

Decided I want to satin my grill. How did you separate it?
-
Dead easy mate. Pop the bonnet. There are some screws/torx bits along the top of the grill then I pretty much just pull it off. There is some screws which connect the lower and upper half of the grills but mine weren't there. They are below the number plate mate. You'll be able to see them if you look.

I can work out how to separate the honeycomb grill from the number plate part. Mine appears to be one piece.

All i done was tape off the area I didn't want to paint. Under the paper is the lipstick and the rest of the grill

Hi there. Loving the build thread. Did you manage to get some logs of temps now you have a cold air pipe up to the ramair?
Tempted to buy one for mine and get a decent air feed to it.
Cheers
-
Hi guys.
@DMackie I haven't managed to yet sorry. But I will get round to it.
Just a little update. I've fitted some vibe slick 6 inch speakers to the front. These speakers make the audio so much more crisp.
Also today I fitted a pioneer mvh-av280bt. The sound quality from this is amazing. Definitely an upgrade from standard. The unit is mechless but that doesn't bother me. I rarely listen to cd's. It has the option of Bluetooth, aux and USB so it accepts a lot of media. The unit also plays films from the USB.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuploads.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F20161009%2F10fed4b280b47829eea83877e30dbecb.jpg&hash=5396a515149c5b4a0bf1f6e2d4cb5afcaed5d195)
The units red lights match the one interior and it's completely plug and play with the correct ISO to quad lock adapter and an aerial adapter. I purchased the adapter which allows for steering wheel controls and these work great. In the future I may add the reverse camera.
Thanks again for reading

I found this thread searching for info on the Dension as I was thinking of buying one just to play music off USB through my MFD2.
Are they good bits of kit? I know there are some cheaper alternatives but they all seem to be capped at 99mb file size and not 100% convinced of the quality, the Dension's look better though.
-
I liked the dension. Only ever used it through Bluetooth though. Cannot comment on the sound through USB or using the aux.
Good bit of kit for the money
