Title: Ed30/r32 rear lights on a budget.
Post by: M9xxr on May 31, 2015, 06:09:17 pm
Right thought id share how to get the smoked cherry red rear lights for a little cheaper than buying a set. I ordered from euro car parts these
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_3.2_2006/p/car-parts/car-electrics-and-car-lighting/lighting1/rear-light/?478444670&1&ffd0d854379b80890033a6cd5cd5302a50ff6e22&000269

and

they are made by Magneti Marelli and the quality is spot on. they have all the same markings as my oem lights i took off my gti. They also come with new bulbs and holders. So mine cost me £83 with a little bit of discount. i then used my original centres, split them and painted the insides. glues back together and i now have this.

they fit up well and look spot on. i know its not a massive saving but every little helps for some people.

Looks good! How did you split the centres? And what paint and colour did you use?

Is your plan to get legit Ed30/R32 inners or get a standard set and then tint them?

Tint standard inners, as per Maxx.

Got mine built together and fitted last night- over the moon with them!

Just checked on euro car parts, use discount code EXTRA10, brings price down to £76 for the outers.

Now question, How did you tint inners and what did people use? Is there a DIY for this?

There is, but I wouldn't bother with it. I did it myself a few months ago but you can get the inners for £60 odd delivered for both on ebay, so I recommend you do that. I'll be buying them myself later today.

So are the magnetelli already tinted?

and how are the inners split and what paint? And also how did you get them to match the outers?

Could you just split open the outers and the inners that I have currently and paint them instead of getting new outers?

you will break the outer lights if you try to split them, there stuck together a lot better than the inner sections and don't very easily come apart, easier to just buy them

I see. so what paint is used for the inners?

Just matt black the insides, the lenses are the same. its the black that make the cherry red effect

So like matt black plastikoat? Like the stuff you get from Wilkos? I would have thought that just makes it go completely black opposed to the dark red look

Looking at doing this mod, for those that have already done it, a HOW TOO, would be nice. If not with pics then words, and materials used  :happy2:

Cheers guys

Ive bought the outters from ECP as well.

I now debating whether to tint the originals or buy them off ebay already tinted but they are for LHD cars only. Is it possible to just take the reverse/fog lenses out my original lights and fit them to the LHD units?

I've read you cant just swap the reverse/fog lenses around on the LHD units as the clips dont match up from one side to another BUT the lenses out the RHD units should fit as I'm not swapping them from one side to another just swapping a white/red lense for the opposite colour.

Just want someone to confirm my thinking, if its not that simple ill just tint the RHD lights.

@si-r32 has done and it's straight forward apparently. Waiting for mine to arrive just.

Your right the clips don't exactly match so a small bit of DIY is needed (remove clips and glue in, not rocket science), the correct RHD lights from TPS approx. 78 per side so a significant saving for a tiny bit of work.

plus to make life even easier and for a symmetrical look only one light needs to be worked on, remove the red lens, this is then your reverse light, put a red bulb in other light for fog job done

tinting your standard lights to match the outer ones personally not for me, depends how much money you have and if you want it to look 100% or not

Just to follow up, my inner lights eventually turned up last week. They are actually made by Magneti Marelli as well as the outer lights. All I needed to do was take them apart, remove the red lens and replace it with the clear lens in my existing light unit. Just need to order a red fog bulb now.

Probably 5/10 minutes max involved in getting them right.

All in I think the full set of lights cost me £140 or so- brand new. As mentioned before, in my opinion its a no brainier for anyone considering a second hand set.

Big thanks to Si for the pointers once more.
