Hmm. This is worryingly familiar for me.
What's the deal if you have these symptoms then? I'm guessing it only gets worse and it's not cheap.
-
Replacement rack. And no.... Not cheap.
-
I got a sort of creaking like that after installing new springs immediately, never was there prior.

This is my case exactly - H&R 30mm fitted a few weeks ago. Thought it was the topmounts.. maybe not!

Dont think so... top mount noise usually occurs over speed bumps.
Maybe @vRSAlex (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1981) can advise on the noise and confirm its the rack
-
Yeah true Rich. Had issues with the mk4 even with new rubbers and that was a clunk/thump over bumps.
Is yours making more noise on left lock? I think the early mk5s had a recognised issue and the rack was revised.
-
I have the same issue soon after fitting H&R springs, coincidence ???

Maybe. My springs have been on for a while and ive only noticed the noise sort of 6 months ago.
-
What springs are you on?
Doesn't make much sense to me that a subtle drop of 30/40mm would cause the rack to wear/fail that much quicker than standard springs. But... that certainly seems to be the pattern.
-
H&R 30mm

H&R 30mm
Definitely a pattern then.
Do others on coilovers or other springs have the same issue I wonder?
Let us know when you've had it looked at, I'm sure there are a few of us that would like to know what the cause of the problem is.
-
Sorry to revive this but I'm on hr 30mm and mine had been knocking abit since they've been fitted. It never did it before.did you get it solved?
-
Mine has the same problem. I'm changing the subframe bolts soon just incase it's that

Thread revival .
What was the outcome? New rack or something else?
I have this noise and I also have H&R springs
-
Pretty sure it was the rack - bit of a common thing. I've had to change mine.....
