Title: The List of issues
Post by: smifffy9 on June 02, 2015, 09:47:53 am
Hey guys, just starting out on here but the car has a few issues. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

1) When still, every so often there is a "wobble" in the car body. This will happen all the time of that particular stoppage. It has to be engine issues as that is the only thing that has any movement (ie rotation of crank etc).

2) The temperature gauge drops when under any real acceleration and if I do a 30-130 pull (on a closed track...) by the end of it, has dropped almost to a quarter on the gauge.

3) The exhaust tips are a no go... I have tried to polish up and every other thing I can think, but no its pitted and corroded.

Any help would be much appreciated,
Cheers,

Also I have paintwork issues, its diamond black, and it appears that there have been stickers in random places. There hasn't, I know the full history of the car but they have appeared. Its weird!

Manual has 2, DSG has 3.

It's a big job for a home mechanic but doable.

Wobble in the car body? Is this when you're idling whilst fully stopped? Possible incorrect air flow due to carbon build up.....

I've yet to see a set of exhaust tips that cannot be reborn! It took me 4 hours to do mine and they were black and never washed for about 8 years.

Hey luke,

So I take it I should change both thermostats (mines a manual).

The wobble is small but noticeable idling whilst full stopped, like at traffic lights, theirs no fluctuation in rev/min or sound of the engine.

These exhaust tips are 9 1/2 years old, with moon miles on it. I really don't think there salvageable.

Very brief idea on thermostats... Main thermostat causes temp not to reach 90deg unless sitting in traffic. Inline thermostat slows the warm up time to 90deg.

I'd change both if I was doing one, I only did the main and will probably go back and do inline at some point.

Your wobble is very noticeable on a mk4 gti, think (but don't quote me) that it's due to carbon build up. I'm not personally worried about it!

Have faith on the exhausts. Put photos up.. Think my build thread or detailing guide has info on it....

wow  :notworthy:

you have put so much detail in the links you have sent, its crazy!

I will change the thermostats, I'm still undecided about the exhaust I am toying with the idea of a new one anyway!

Are there any threads of people doing a carbon clean?

There's a few at home use products that "state" they help but I believe the only true system is called Terraclean. Have a forum search and see if you want to advance on it.

Depends on year of car for how many thermostats it has fitted!

My late 2007 manual only has the 1 main thermostat but earlier cars had main plus a inline stat where as dsg has main plus 2 inline ones  :happy2:
