Hell everybody,
Looking for some advice before I take my 2006 GTI to the garage to get a proper diagnostic.
Recently something very strange is happening under hard acceleration once I hit around 4K revs the car will die (revs drop to zero, and bounce) and I need to change to a higher gear, its kind of like i am hitting the redline and the car is putting me into safety mode, before I do it any damage.
This happens in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, (havent really tried in 4th +) gears.
But if I sit in neutral, I rev the engine and hit any rev range without issues, which makes me think its a safety/electrical issue.
Car seems to be driving well, and pulling as normal except for this issue.
wonder if anybody else has had any similar issues? fixes?

Have you had chance to remove and clean the MAF sensor?
Could be mucky
-
If you get any warning cels in the dashboard then some one with a vcds cable should be able to scan the car to localise the issue.
-
Thanks - no lights on the dash, although they flashed up and went just as quick.
Just read on another forum possible faults could be:
G28 Crank Senor
Plugs
Coil Packs - How do I check if these were replaced? or is it far too late now to ask VW (I bought the car in 2013)?
-
Mines a right turd as well at the moment. Similar problem but my revs won't go past 2500rpm and can't go above 40mph just a loud hissing.
Been diagnosed as a turbo cut off valve problem (Divertor Valve)... No warning lights and the fault is intermittent
If your coil packs have been changed under warranty then VW should have it on file. Mine was change as part a recall on a service about 2-3 years ago

VCDS scan will tell you if your coil packs have ever failed so do that first.
VW also keep a digital record of all the work done on your car whilst it was under YOUR ownership. For some reason they're very reluctant to tell you what was done when the last owner had it.
Just to rule out here entirely but if it gets to 4K and drops but picks back up is there any chance that could be a clutch slipping?

Found another topic on this - sounds identical.

Is this what I require?

Just had the scan done.
G28 - Crank speed sensor error
&
Boost pressure intermittent (but could be related to the sensor)
-
Don't go cheap, get the proper one if you can source it.
buy cheap, buy twice.....

£740 lighter but I finally have my car back!
It was the speed sensor that was causing this issue, just in case anybody else finds the same issue.
While the car was in the garage I also had the following done:
1)Cam Belt Change - all pulleys and belts, and water pump
2)New Front suspension bushes (rear alu)
3)CV Boots
4)Discs and Pads all round
5)Full Service - Oil Change, Filters (Oil, Fuel, Air, Pollen), Spark Plugs, Anti Freeze
Great to have the car back, but fallen out of love with it! :surprised:

Yep. I've had that problem before. Changed the crank sensor and hey presto :happy2:
