Hi everyone,
This thread is more or less a log of my ownership of my GTI. Nothing too crazy, just some basic maintenance and minor mods.
My car is a 2007 Golf GTI in Shadow Blue. Its the newer model with the BWA engine, and DSG.
Being in New Zealand we get a lot of Japanese Imports, and this is one of them. There is some up and down sides to imports. The option spec is bit of a mixed bag, some are really high spec with plenty of options ticked whilst some are pretty low spec and basic. A lot of imports dont tend to have FSH, but what they make up for is usually some key modification here and there.
Mine is quite high spec for an import, being fitted with the following
Heated leather
Xenon
Dual climate
Auto lights
Auto wipers
Heated and folding mirrors
Its had a couple of modifications made when it was in Japan
Adjustable suspension
Modified exhaust
Front carbon corner splitters
Rear carbon diffuser
Carbon look cluster trim
Engine grounding kit
LED tube tail lights
18" OEM wheels (Monza?)
A cute little tartan ring around the ignition barrel
Nothing too major, but just enough to make it handle well, corner flat and look unique.
The tali lights are what you guys would call Marmite, but they will stay for now. The look has kind of grown on me as its just so different from all the other Golfs around, and at the end of the day its hard to justify the cost of a set of R32 tails to replace them.
My plan for the car is fairly basic. Soon ill be doing the Cam follower and DV replacements, just because i have no documents to say they have been done in the past. After that, itll be a catless downpipe, intake and a Revo stage 2 tune.
Heres some pictures of the car. I havent had time since i picked it up the other day to give it a decent clean and wax so this will do for now.

Welcome, from Belfast. Nice car.
Where are you in NZ?
-
Well spec'd car you u got there mate. Always nice to see another shadow blue on the forum
-
Cheers guys.
Im in windy old Wellington.
-
Love this colour, what I wanted but couldn't find one! Enjoy
-
so, got bored this afternoon and decided to explore.
Still dont know what the exhaust is, the only marking that i can see is the Jasma cert plate. I can see that a previous owner raised it by adding another set of holes in the hangers. Obviously it as hanging too low once lowered. The tips should be stainless silver, not black like they are. might drop the rear muffler down and give them a polish at some point.
Had a poke around under the bonnet too, just for fun.

Its got a pivot thing to ground my raizins.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2F20150613_145910-resized-1280_zpsfugnscna.jpg&hash=0aeb8598c2be10e49215abbb31098191cc88a035)
Pulled the cover off and started to notice thing that werent normal. First up, it has Okada Plasma Direct coils and some weird "head balancer" things. also has an Audi oil cap.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2F20150613_150824-resized-1280_zps5zqwrplf.jpg&hash=7aede634eb96264d75b589fa91343725e3030f02)

Then i noticed this. Its an aftermarket boost take off point.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06694_zpsfnlrtctv.jpg&hash=dae92f0dd53b79b2af18e9d752d2f9564a0b17e4)
Where oh where does the vacuum line go? To this, a Forge diverter valve on the turbo.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06707_zpsonbutsln.jpg&hash=6ef3d2a1e595726026fa452459f22d88a00e2a95)
it also appears to have the newer PCV

i did find some weird Alpha 16 and CI ignition boosters. Meant to boost the voltage to the coils to 16V, and stabilise the voltage.

I did some digging around under the car too. Found the adjustables are genuine Volkswagen Racing suspension by Sachs. Flash.

one thing i didnt know was that the car appears to have puddle lights. not sure whats going on but they dont seem to work.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06713_zpslxdukdbe.jpg&hash=12e6e439a2d77033da5867b13b91fa2dafa76a86)

i fixed a thing tonight.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2F20150617_191134-resized-1280_zpspmfacytl.jpg&hash=c456ef567a036b62e78a5274940c8610cb7d610c)
Working puddle lights!
Not too hard to work with. push the mirror forward/towards front of car (can take a bit of force), this will reveal the puddle light unit. There is a little torx screw (t10 maybe). Once the screw is removed, you need to use a small screwdriver to lever the unit out from the edge opposite to where the screw hole is. its held in with a little bump. It just pulls out then. To remove the bulb, its held in a little rubber holder. You need to pull the whole rubber socket out of the lamp unit. I just wiggled and twisted.
Once the unit was removed and socket out, i found out that neither side actually had the LED fitted in the socket. The led was also stuffed. popped new leds in, and away it went. in order to fit the socket back in, you need to lubricate the rubber. i used a small amount of dishwash liquid and popped it back in.
Unfortunately ive also found that the light in the boot doesnt work and its not the bulb. need to test the holder for voltage.

Well this afternoon was productive, yay.
Started with this.

and these

Started with the oil change as the engine was hot.
Got the car in the air. Pretty easy to jack and axle stands went on the rear wishbone mount.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06717_zpsbzyd3bdr.jpg&hash=2f0fac2fa951a9351caf6c1e79dd48b1a32a6c11)
Where my droop at? oh thats right, adjusties.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06718_zpsfxmyn2yc.jpg&hash=4991c5ab6cd1720a17b59a0e8ce8c7b642e48e19)
Its all pretty straight forward apart from the oil filter housing. Its a cartridge filter but the canister is upside down hanging under the engine. Obviously its full of oil, thank fully VW implemented a drain into the housing. You unscrew the little cap, get a 3mm allen/hex key, push it into center of the orange nipple and as you push in gently push it towards on side. it will pop over and oil will drain out. There is a genuine special tool, but pfft, thats money.

Youll need a big 36mm socket to get the housing off. Thankfully i have mine from my BMW days.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06719_zps9l8drxwz.jpg&hash=e242ab6ea2cf0b011036034ffef2604bf250bd8c)
Chucked new filter and gasket in, and dumped in 5L of oil (put in 4.5L, checked level, added further 500ml to bring to full mark)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06734_zpsxfmqyctx.jpg&hash=3f500fa86e8072005288efd1480c4c7de02127eb)
Once the oil change was done i moved onto the diverter valve. I wanted to service it as its a Forge unit (and meant to be regularly serviced) and i had no history of any service for it.
I removed all the arch linings on the RH side of the car to gain more access. Be sure to have a bucket near when you pull the rear section off as its usually packed with mud, and sure enough mine was.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06724_zpsriz93uho.jpg&hash=1a5b15678c173a3de05cad5497254fd38a2e536a)
Bit of a pain to get out, much fussing around with different length extensions on my ratchet and much bashed knuckles. No fun at all. Got there eventually though.

Pulled it to bits. Lots of dirty slimy grease and some dirt. The piston pushes out from the front of the unit, stick your pinky finger in and it should pop out. Mine was a bit sticky.

cleaned it all out, slathered some synthetic great in the space between the o-rings and reassembled.

Popped that back together, and reassembled all the trims and shields i removed.
Moved onto the HPFP cam follower.
Removed the cover with stupid integrated air filter

Easy to remove, just dont be like me and break the farking clip off the sensor plug. Zipties to the rescue. Ill get a new plug and repin it at some point.

Leaks a bit of fuel when removed, but otherwise straight forward. i did not remove the rubber hose under the pump, i left it connected.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06742_zpsqhretqzp.jpg&hash=fcc23b6307b1f6a2ba9b93bd8f1ec5b1c72caec9)
Pulled the follower out and HAPPY DAYS, its in good condition with moderate wear. About what i would expect if it had been replaced 30,000km or so, so someone has done it in the past. Cam lobes looked good.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06741_zpsu52apuwc.jpg&hash=4f4745ef1dc523dc5a8ac9f96d34cf8e1023c4bf)
Popped all that back together, primed the pump to check for leaks, all good.
And lastly, fitted my new wipers. So good, they actually clear the screen unlike the old ones.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06747_zpswgo6ehq2.jpg&hash=2a9d08b2a76b4dd6dbc2ebe122434b36fdd81c33)
Over all the car doesnt feel much different, maybe a bit smoother. because i disconnected the better the DSG is learning again so its a bit iffy on its change speed and timing at times but that should sort its self as it adapts. I have noted boost is smoother, and i can hear more of a turbo intake noise and woosh on throttle let off.
one annoying thing is that since disconnecting the battery my indicators dont flash when i lock and unlock the car now. will have to do some googling.
-
Good job on the car so far - I did my cam follower today too and broke the exact same sensor clip. Thought it was gone forever until I saw it lying on the floor where my tools were. How annoying!
-
Great work - that's a really good read. Love the amount of work that has gone into your mk5!
Whereabouts in NZ are you? I was born in Auckland, but seem to be stuck in the UK now...
-
Ooops - just noticed you said you're in Wellington :ashamed:...
-
Did some things today.
Boot light now works and is now LED. success.
Also noticed when the sun was in a certain position it was shining on a plaque on the top of the exhaust tips. Turns out its a legit as f*ck Kakimoto Einsatz Type 2 exhaust.

Dont think mine is the burnt titanium tip, likely the black chrome but until i drop it and give it a polish i wont know for sure.

in other developments, my persistence has paid off.
My carbon front splitters are made by COX in japan. They also make the carbon cluster surround (which according to the site is actually real carbon).
The splitters are about $300. no idea how to buy them if i wanted to though. None on Yahoo JPN.

FML, finally managed to look into why the electrics on the drivers seat dont work.
Checked the plugs under the seat, and found this.
A disconnected and taped up yellow wire,

and a large plug that was disconnected. the other half was stuck under the seat.

I checked the wiring on the passengers side, which does work, and the big plug was connected. disconnected it and the electrics stopped working. Ok, obviously the large plug has the heater and lumbar wiring in it.
I fished the plug out from under the seat and plugged it in. Noticed the clip on the plug was broken off, so used a ziptie to hold it together. Tested, heating and lumbar both work now, but as soon as the ignition is turned on i get an airbag light. FML.
Will try disconnecting the battery later, but i feel i might have to VAGCOM it. Not sure what the yellow wire is, but didnt touch that one.
-
Great success!
Borrowed the Launch CRP129 from work in the hopes of resetting the airbag light i triggered.
Plugged it in, read the code (something about drivers seat airbag trigger unreadable, which is no surprise being that the airbag wiring is bypassed and looped), cleared the code successfully and so far it hasnt come back. Hopefully its gone for good. In the mean time, my backside is super toasty and the lumbar support works again.

So the Golf reminded me that the Germans have an awesome sense of humour. Today was the first time ive driven the car more than around the block since doing the work last weekend. I took it to work.
I noticed straight away last weekend that the indicators werent flashing when the doors were locked like they used to. i figured this was down to coding. Today i also noticed the LH puddle light and mirror werent working. Hmmm, weird. Tried the LH front window, nope. Crap. Tried the LH rear window, nope. LH doors also arent locking at all. Balls.
When i was doing the work last weekend i disconnected the battery (as i was working on the fuel pump). Apparently its a well known... feature.... that if the battery is disconnected for a period of time, or replaced, that the body control unit can throw a wobbly and chuck its toys out of the cot. The byproduct of this is it usually forgets there is a LH side of the car. The cure? To disconnect the battery for half an hour, and when reconnected it should stop being a little bitch.
Ill do this tomorrow, and then ill be winning again.
On a side note, car drives mint. Turbo is making more boosty noises, obviously the diverter valve wasnt in good shape but its working great now. Also makes wooshy noises when throttle is let off. Airbag light still gone.
Have ordered a couple of things through the dealer. Namely the electrical connector i broke on the fuel pump last weekend, and an ORing for the intercooler pipe (which i noted the other day had weeped some oil from inside the pipe, indicating its leaking air). Apparently no one in NZ has ever ordered that connector, so its on its way from Germany. PN 3B0 973 703 G

What a day.
After breakfast i went out to the Golf, disconnected battery and started a timer for 30 mins. Stuffed around during this time, cleaned some pine needles off the car and cleared a blocked drain in the engine bay (fecking pine trees). Eventually the timer buzzed in my pocket, so i reconnected the battery, and did some further testing.
The car has suddenly remembered it has a LH side, and all electrics are now working. HURRAH! As i suspected the indicators are now flashing again when the car is locked and unlocked, and all the doors, windows and mirrors do what they should.
In my excitement i decided to take the car for a drive for some shopping. Drives there mint, showed some cars who was boss on the passing lanes, awesome. I park up, return some things i didnt need, and move the car to another carpark for some further shopping.
Now, before i continue, lets look back at yesterday. I took the car to work, no LH side of car and all. At lunch time i decided i wanted to go out and get some feed. Jump in the golf, turn the key and the barstewards doesnt start. just cranks over and over and over, no signs of it trying to fire. Oh stuff this. I jump out, in the rain, pop the hood and do some generic "trust me, im a mechanic" poking and prodding under the hood. Jump back in, and she fires up first turn of the engine (like usual).
Did some reading online, couple of reports of vapor lock in the fuel system causing hard starts when warm. thought it was a bit odd because the car had been sitting for 5 hours, so hardly warm, but accepted it. car started and drove home after work fine.
Now, back to this afternoon. I finish buying my awesome stuff (ie: nothing), and go to start the car. It does it again, just cranks over and over. FML. Jump out, be a mechanic again, still wont start. Figure if its heat related, doing more shopping and leaving the car there would A: do me some good, i need a walk B: let the car cool down and it might start, if it feels like it.
Shopped for a bit, came back to the car, still wont start. By this time its been a couple of hours, im pretty pissed off and the better half is getting a bit worried. I reassure her but once again showing im a mechanic under the hood. Still doesnt start, she is losing confidence in my mechanical (and magical) abilities.
Its getting cold and dark, so i call defeat and ring roadside rescue. They checked a low car suitable flatbed was available, and booked it. Unfortunately it was on a job, so would be a while off. in the mean time i decided to do some more digging.
Obviously it was fuel or spark that was missing. I always have my OBD2 bluetooth scanner in the car, because its fun watching things on my phone screen whilst driving. I did a quick check, if the fuel pump wasnt working, the fuel rail pressure would be poo. Sure enough, when i checked the fuel pressure in the rail it shot up as soon as the engine was cranked. Fuel ruled out, the low pressure pump is feeding the high pressure pump and the pressure was quickly increased to almost 1000psi.
So, its spark then. Its coil on plug, so it would be pretty unexpected for all 4 coils to fail in one go. Wait, what about the japanese ignition booster boxes? Turned the ignition on, and popped the hood. sure enough, the lights on the boxes were not lit. Wiggled and jiggled the wiring going to the boxes, and the light came on. Turned the key and the car fired into life. barstewards.
Drove around the block a bit, and the car was running fine. Decided to YOLO it, so rang roadside rescue and told them to cancel the truck as i was going to limp the car home (and not pay the $80 towing fee).
Got home ok, no issues at all. DSG is even operating a little better with the battery reset, and its learning my driving style. Rev matching on downshift is a bit better than it was too.
So all in all, the car is now in the garage, didnt need a tow, and ill be ripping all the useless dodgy japanese electronic boxes out from under the hood.
Didnt need this in the end, but made me feel like a mad hardparker driving home with it in

I thought i should probably get the stricken Golf out of the garage so the daily can get out of the cold. Poor thing.
So this is where i started. removed the engine cover (getting real good at that now), and took a good geez at what was before me. The two boxes and the clump of wiring.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06748_zpsdmvqvkpf.jpg&hash=00bdbf60fec8ce6d30d76c8488ffdea90feda53f)

I started by physically removing the boxes from their mounts and removing all the dozens of zipties holding the wiring in.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06750_zps54kccwf9.jpg&hash=9e8f439b8ba332bffdeca4b6acebc0c462ac72a3)

Disconnected the (unfused) mains connection, and ground
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06754_zpszbmis47j.jpg&hash=4906b0a6ec57719c62cb7101748a9f9d23501850)

When i weeded out the wiring for the Alpha CI box, i wasnt left with a lot. In fact, only two wires were heading into the loom.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06757_zps8j8yndbd.jpg&hash=632e26f357ba73f5b65168a38977a5bbded31919)

Followed the two wires, and found them intercepting the main power feed to the coils.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06760_zpsffejghmj.jpg&hash=a7639105cdd8e485e0cc40cb94a03434f37c12c5)
Now, i did intend to solder the wires back together when i started, but its bit of a poo to reach, the wires are now short with not much slack (due to them being cut), and the lovely japanese installer has installed bullet terminals on them. I decided it was just easier to reuse the bullet terminals, so i plugged them together and wrapped the loom in insulation tape.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo541%2FKelvinatorNZ%2FDSC06768_zpsrpuyfhrq.jpg&hash=2afdc0ebd1faf4a5ed0c19c9de324be392336e44)
So after fixing that mess i had a look into the Raizin box. After some careful investigation i noted that the Pivot system comprises of the box with a power and ground, and a completely separate grounding kit. Left the grounding kit in place (after a quick tidy up of the wiring to the battery), and removed the box and its wiring.

Car starts and runs normally again. No other real noticeable differences yet, hopefully i dont notice a reverse placebo by removing the boosters.
-
Cars been running great since removing that rubbish, no noticable difference.
Ordered some extended DSG paddles, and a generic ebay decat 3" downpipe. Should be a bit of fun.

Its also the little things.

Lame question, but how did you get the old VW logo off the keyfob? I tried getting mine off with a screwdriver but I just chopped and chewed at the logo instead of actually lifiting it off...
-
no worries. I used a tiny little jewelers flat blade screw driver to lever it off. You can see the little mark i made when i started to lever it off in the first photo at about 1 oclock position. Once i got the blade under the edge the badge just popped off.

Got the pipe home, and had a decent nose over it. Preliminary investigations show that its actually pretty well put together.
Packaging couldve been better, the flange was poking out of the box (heh) when i got it, but seems although it was sticking out it hadnt been bashed around and was OK.

The pipe is also pretty damn big. 3" with bellmouthed flange. Standard size lighter for scale.

The welds are pretty decent, tidy with no splatter or obvious holes. Good penetration.

Comes with VBand to join the sections, and a new gasket for the turbo (although apparently its better to reuse the standard metal gasket)

As long as the O2 sensor adaptor arrives this week, ill endeavour to have this fitted this weekend. Sound clips to come.

This is the pipe i purchased.

Was a huge risk, but has 100% feedback from 21 reviews. I havent fitted it yet so not 100% sure of fitment, but looks OK. Ive checked the flange and it appears straight and true with a straight edge, so thats a good start.
-
Hi mate, any idea where the rear carbon bumper piece came from? It looks nice IMO
-
Hi, i cant be 100% sure as it was on the car when i got it, but it appears to be an OSIR rear

Lovely, thanks, I will look into it. Like the threat btw

where can I get those rear lights?
-
If youre in NZ, Trademe, if not, probably ebay.

Downpipe is in the car, pretty easy to fit really. Remove the engine cover, Disconnect O2 sensor connector and feed wiring down. Remove the two top nuts from turbo flange (long extension on ratchet). Lift car, climb under and remove the axle heat shield. once thats gone you can easily access the two bottom flange nuts. Remove them too (needed to buy a 16mm 3/8" socket and spanner for this as my 1/2" ratchet and socket was too big to fit).
Remove rear O2 sensor from pipe (will be fecking tight!), undo rear sleeve on pipe and side up pipe. Undo bolts on hanger and wrestle the pipe off the turbo and out of its home. Pull pipe out from under car.
Reassembly is reverse of disassembly.
Old pipe out,

And what a MK5 GTI sounds like with an open downpipe
And with new downpipe fitted
I do have one issue though, the centre hanger does not line up at all. This is something that i have heard others have issues with on other ebay downpipes. Its nothing major, and i have the car booked in on the weekend to see if i can get them to cut the mounts off and reweld them correctly. Dont want to drive too far without it attached as all the weight of the downpipe is resting on the flexi and turbo flange. Not ideal.

Overall impressions arent great. Its louder on cold start as expected, but other than that its really not that different. At WOT its noticeably louder but not amazing. DSG farts are marginally louder, and no popping or crackling. I suspect the fancy Jasma certified catback is stifling the awesome, but its a nice civilised exhaust.
Throttle response is good, maybe a bit sharper. The idle issues i had the other day were fixed with an ECU reset, its running great again.
-
cars back, goes like stink and i dont have to worry about the exhaust falling off now. Success.
Its is louder, makes some great noises at WOT. There is a whistle coming from the exhaust under boost, suspect the mid clamp between the two sections, or the VBand clamp is leaking slightly. Will deal with it another day, no tractor noises or smells though.
Also got around to fitting the DSG paddle extensions. Holy sh*t for something so simple, i cant believe it didnt come out with paddles this long standard. So much better, its more natural to flip the paddles now as i dont have to search for the little button on the back of the wheels. They do limit the space for fingers on the inside of the wheel, but its barely noticeable and didnt seem to impact me when test driving.

Great thread love the build, where did you get the puddle lights from?

Puddle lights are factory fit, with LED bulbs fitted.
