You should be ok with 0w-40 but it is not adviseable to just shove any old oil in without checking its specification. You were lucky this time, although 40 weight might be a tad too viscous for the your engine (1.4 TSI IIRC?). You must make sure that what ever you top up with meets or exceeds VW's specs or you'll potentially be looking at some premature wear and/or expensive damage.
The light coming on is not good, it might be worth while getting into better (weekly) habits in terms of your under bonnet checks - especially with a tuned engine! Run that turbo dry and you'll be in all sorts of trouble.
After spending all that money on the body work, it would be criminal to let the engine go because it's run dry. I'd also be a little concerned as to why a fairly new engine is using so much oil too. When was it last serviced?

@ animal as per Rich's sig he has a Pirelli now.

Oops, missed that!

I use halfords VW spec 5W30 in a 2 litre bottle for my top ups (plenty of them!)

Is that 502 or 507 spec??

I bought 5 litres from VW a few months back for topping up it's 5W-40, and just had a service this week and received a 1 litre bottle of 5W-30. Not sure how these line up under the VW gradings.
From memory one of the original VW grades in the manual has been discontinued, but can't recall if its 502 or 504?!

You're kidding right? Have you seen the tolerances from VW on oil consumption? They're MASSIVE. My cousin bought a new beetle a few years ago and it was drinking about a litre of oil every month. She complained and 2 VW dealers told her 'that's within expected tolerances'. :surprised:
The tolerance for a mk5 R32 according to the dealer is 1 litre of oil every 600 miles. That's a hell of a lot of oil!
-
Just to make sure, are the oil specs 502/504/507?
-
I've done 6,700 miles since getting the Pirelli
As soon as the Oil light came on, i filled her up. She was low :signLOL:
What is the best Oil for my Pirelli then ?
Castrol Edge 5w\30 ?
Would like to know and i shall get some and fill her fully up - only put 1 litre in yesterday, had very little money on me.
Since i've put this Castrol Edge OW-40, is it recommended i use the same Oil or is it still OK to use, lets say - i.e Mobil 1 OW-40 ?
Thanks :drinking:

That sounds more like it. Just because tolerances are (apparently...) silly doesn't mean you should not be concerned when it does drop quite low relatively quickly. It doesn't rule out a holed-sump or ruptured line.
That said, even if the tolerances are silly, it wouldn't be an issue if you kept a regular eye on it.

What is the best Oil for my Pirelli then ?
Castrol Edge 5w\30 ?

Out of my last 15 cars, only 1 has ever needed a top up between services
That was a Saxo VTS with a big leak on the cylinder head.
I do check regularly, I think I have just been lucky

OK Chaps,
This is the Oil i put in
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_169697_langId_-1_categoryId_165581
It says its Longlife and it is Synthetic.
I should be alright ya ?
Since you folks scared the sh*t out of me, im still going for a oil change, filter, book it in for Wednesday next week at VW.
Been reading up some forums, Castrol Edge OW-40 is the best oil to use :chicken:
-
@Rich.
Halfords website even does the hardwork by letting you put your Reg number in and then selecting the CORRECT oil unlike the one you chose.
You should have picked this one.
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_210681_langId_-1_categoryId_165581?messageId=SUMP_SIZE_MESSAGE&messageParam=4.50
As it says VW 504/507.
In the words of Metallica - Nothng Else Matters.
-
1l per 600 miles is a helluva lot. By that reckoning, my car would have gone through 30l in less than two years - enough to make anyone concerned about oil consumption. Over 15k miles, my car has used 1l of oil (not incl oil changes).
