Title: Creeking/Cracking/Knocking noise from steering
Post by: Lucas017 on June 11, 2015, 08:45:49 pm
Hi all,

I'm new to the VW scene and it's my first post on here :happy2:

I've had my Golf GTI Edition 30 for about 2 months now... I'm very impressed with the car especially the DSG box and it feels better built than my 2013 Fiesta ST!!

However, as the title says... A noise coming from the steering, it only seems to happen at lower speeds, but it can be quite loud!

I've checked the other threads with some steering rack problems, but the noise differs on the videos.

Has anyone had anything like this before? Or any ideas what it could be?
Many thanks

I have the exact same thing, was going to start a post but... hopefully someone can answer.

Mine creaks/click when turning both ways, it's annoying more than anything, doesn't seem to have issues steering and the road holding is ok.

Seems to have got worse with the rain.  I think it may need some sort of full lubrication on the rack/arms/joints etc?

I hope that is all it is!

Looking at another thread on here, it could possibly be the Sub frame bolts? Not to sure though.

Mine seems to get louder or worse the warmer the weather...

As you said, it doesn't seem to affect the handling at all.

I may take it to MidlandsVW as its not to far from me. I'll let you know when it gets sorted  :happy2:

Got the same issue with my GTI...has been the same for the past 6months with no difference in driving. Still holds the road like it should!

Got it booked in for the sub frame bolts changing and wishbone rear bush's changing to powerflex ones. Hopefully the sub frame bolts will cure the issue as its just annoying when parking up!

Yeah it's very annoying! - I hope that sorts the issue out, I'll get mine done then

Let us know how you get on  :happy2:

@Lucas017 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11953) @jaye2992 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10663)

Weirdly enough, last night when the car was at operating temp (drive back from work) I jacked the car up (used axle stands too  :signLOL:) and got underneath.  The 18mm subframe main bolts I torqued up then added 1/4 turn, there was quite a bit of movement until I got to the torque wrench click, which was surprising.

Took it down, tested it and still making noise.  So got in the car this morning to go to work and it's silent! - No creaking and smooth as anything.  Got to work and the car was fully warm (15 mile drive) and in the car park was still quiet, with one click I heard but 99% now.  The bolts must of contracted when cold.

This leads me to think that the ECS spacers and bolts would do the trick.

Hope it helps a little  :happy2:

Thanks @MrACD (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=12758)

I took it to MidlandsVW today as it's not boosting right :(
Sounds like the the intake is alot louder, but air is escaping from somewhere. They're going to have it on the ramps next week when they change the oil. (Millers Nanodrive)  :happy2:

They took it for a little drive and they said 99% its the subframe bolts which is creating the knocking/Creeking sound... so I'll order myself some I think.

Yeah I've ordered some of the spacers and bolts to make sure!

Hopefully it's nothing serious with the boost, maybe the DV or a pipe or something.

Always something with these things  :fighting: - Just drove a 430d M-Sport, makes me think........  :driver:

Top Mounts and Bearings that are on their way out can also cause these noises.

@Redemption (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7164) Think this is what might be happening to mine.  Weird thing though that first thing in the morning when the air temp is cooler there is no creaking at all.  Then later in the day when it's warm it creaks.

Looked at the drivers side top mount and its rusted really bad.  Passenger side is ok..  Might just get them changed.

Mine were clicking/creaking when turning at low speeds and manouvering to park and the noise seemed worse some days than other.  Had new coilovers fitted that included new mounts and bearings and that cured it. The old ones looked somewhat worse for wear.

If you have the funds try TyrolSports subframe spacer kit. Quite complete and high build quality, just not cheap.
