Over the last few days my car has developed a knock when moving off from stationary. It doesn't happen every time, and is just a single knock. It's coming from the front. I don't believe it to be the steering as its when the car is straight, and jiggling the wheel doesn't induce it.
Any ideas as to what it may be?!

Sub-Frame perhaps? Fairly common issue that can be solved by fitting these:-

Thanks. I read about it but it seems to occur on lock too?
I suppose for the £ it would be safer to fit them anyway.

That's a cheap option to start with. Chasing down knocks can quickly become an expensive ball-ache.

I think I may have the same issue.
Does it appear to be louder some days than others?

I had side to side knock. Spirited driving caused it to knock on every corner and full lock in and out of parking spaces.
Sub-frame bolts solved it. :happy2:

Had this knocking myself when taking off ond stopping one knoch could be heard! Went for the big solution straight away because i read that the VW spacer kit not always worked...

That link says there's a TSB for it? Is that America only?

Don't know that, i am in Sweden... :pomppomp:

I have a knock but its a rarity so I will go for the cheaper kit and post results

More noises.
A fairly loud continuous knock that gets louder/faster the faster you go- slows right down when moving slowly. It pretty much disappears under heavy braking and accelerating, and is loudest when you lift your fit off the accelerator.
I should add that the car is booked in next week, so I'm not after an Internet diagnose as I appreciate it could be anything. Knowing nothing about mechanical bits, I'm just curious as to what it may be.

From your description it could be a drive shaft! .
Interested not to hear if that cheaper bolt kit from awesome has solved the op original problem. I guess the cheaper option was upgrade to what VW had come up wit and the more expensive options is every bolt in the subframe

Well, the mechanic looked at it last night and thinks it's a gearbox issue or the DMF. He's to remove it this weekend for a better look.
Is the DMF common to go in the Mk5?
