Title: Switches.
Post by: Vwgtiking on June 13, 2015, 06:17:26 pm
Next to the esp and set switches I have 2 blanks. Just wondering is there any switches that physically click on and off that I can use.

The esp and set switches are like electronically on and off if that make sense

These have the option to be just for show of as switches for additional costs  :happy2:

They have a push button or latching switch.

I have two push buttons for my garage and gate. Not cheap though. But look the nuts.

Yeah not cheap for a button. If I bought an esp, can it be wired to turn something off and on. But how would it work when turning ignition on and off??

If you want a cheap alternative you need to get yourself is a latching relay and wire it to any vw switch,  no vw switch stays on,  it's like a door bell switch,  but with a magnet type latching relay it remembers if it was on or off regardless of turning ignition on and off.

Hi. Which latched relay would you recommend. Also how would I wire the esp switch to it. I am not after illumination. Which pins?

This is a good one,  ie standard terminals,  standard looking relay,  no need to solder wires to terminals etc,  price is reasonable for what it is

I did the same thing, wired my garage opener to three switches. Also before that I had a blank switch with the VW logo on it, looked very good. I had to buy a different ashtray to get five slots so I could have ESP, SET and the three buttons for the gates etc.

Looks great, really OEM. They can also make them bespoke if you aren't going too complicated.

The other option maybe is the USB aux button from a SKODA. I was tempted to try this but no room so didn't investigate much. It looked doable though.

If I bought say an esp switch. Can I use it turn off my boost gauge? If so which pins will I require? I don't want illumination.

Have you wired one up yet?

In short no. Because I Also already have esp and TPMS buttons and couldnt find a W switch cheap. I ended up using a normal rocker switch. I chose one which looks pretty OEM and have since stuck with it. If I come across one at breakers then I will replace it. What are you looking to use on for?

I am looking to use it to turn my boost gauge off when I don't want to use it. I want to use a tyre set button and stick a blank on top of it. But I wouldn't know how to wire it to a latching relay?

I am looking at latching switches on eBay just plain square ones and somehow use that.

there is a good youtube video in the thread I have linked earlier explaining how relays work. Do a bit of research, they really not that difficult to understand once its been explained a few times.
Latching relays are anything up to £20.00, where as in the video it shows a way of using 2 regular relays to do the same job.

Alternatively if you are considering replacing the top and not having it illuminated then check this out:

It's just trying to find a suitable switch to stick the blank cover on.

Measured up an old switch and I found a "rectangle latching button" on eBay which looks like a good donor. Only £2.50 from HK

That definitely is the easiest option mate. Euro car parts do rocker switches etc for a quid. U may find summit similar and not have to wait a month!

I bought it now but I don't mind waiting as I still have to install the boost gauge yet.

Well. I trimmed the eBay switch and the blanking button. And this is what I have, a bit messy underneath it all but looks fine on the outside

Off is raised

The buttons are fitted snuggly by friction so in 2 minds about gluing the switch to the blank.
