Been lurking here for a while, finally bought a Mk5 GTI secondhand last October. Absolutely loving it on the daily commute.
Thanks to everyone for all the good buying/maintenance advice, it's really come in handy.
-
Welcome mate, so what's the spec of you're GTI? Also :worthless:
-
Thanks for the welcome, Wooosh. Yeah, wasn't sure whether I should post the pics here or in the members' rides section.

It's a stock 2006 GTI with the only original upgrades being the sunroof and leather seats with heating and electric adjustment.
Since I picked it up, I've swapped out all the worn switches (the ones with the rubbery finish that scratched off over time), added an RCD510 and phone mount, LEDs inside and out, and an Edition 30 manual shifter. Hope to add the Ed30 MFSW and parking brake lever this summer when I have more time.

Don't know how i missed this one. Welcome! Nice to have another member in Barcelona. Have u checked your cam follower and DV?
-
Not yet, though it's on my long to-do list. The acceleration can be a bit squishy, but not always.
Know of any reliable garages to have the work done? My local stealership couldn't even figure out the canbus battery drain issue, so I'm not confident they can sort out a more complicated problem.

I was the same when i purchased my car had no faith in the local garages or stealers so i decided to do all the work myself.
-
Yeah, I took mine around to four places just as a test, and got four different diagnoses and four very different repair quotes.
You're a much braver and more skilled man than I am, though, as if I started tinkering with anything vital in my car, it'd be like fashioning my own coffin!
-
Did they say anything was faulty? When i started i felt the same with each job i get slightly less DIY paranoia.
-
None sussed out the canbus problem, even though I already knew from this forum and others what to expect.
About the occasional lack of kick, I got the following responses: 1) need a new turbocharger; 2) need a new fuel pump; 3) it's normal as cars age (mine's hit 10 years); 4) need to take a lot of things apart to find out what it is.
:surprised:

I can change the cam follower and DV for u and scan with VCDS for a few beer tokens.
-
Cheers, Dazza! PM sent.
-
Dindn't receive anything. Maybe one of the admins can sort it out?
@rich83 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=709) whats the cap for personal messages? 375?
-
Can't remember. I raised it a while back. 500 maybe
-
hey dnr1g
Lovely looking car, liking the blue mood lighting inside :)
-
Cheers, ghuk! The wife thinks it looks chavvy, but I like it too much to care.
It goes so well with the blue of the clocks that when I get a moment I'm going to add another blue LED in the other footwell (which was missing for some reason).
-
Did you also delete your antenna??
-
Yeah, I removed it because the folks round here seem to like to nick them -- of the four people I know who own Mk5s, six antennas have gone walkabout.
-
Welcome. What a great city. I have been staying at the EuroPark hotel the last 3yrs.

Cheers, Stevie! Give us a shout when you're next in town if you fancy a pub crawl.
-
Sounds good. Next year will be getting booked soon. :happy2:
