Title: just had service done........ cam belt advice
Post by: NDGTI on June 18, 2015, 05:39:01 pm
I had my cam belt changed 3 and half years ago
since then my car has only done 15,000 miles
The garage recommended i get cam belt changed , is this really necessary after only 15000 miles ?
if it needs doing i have no problem getting it done, i just don't want to line the garages pockets because of their greed

I am in a similar situation, except that my car has done about 4k in 3 years...

Its 4years or 40,000 miles. It will be fine until your next service (assuming it's within 12 months or so) but they're not really pushing it as 3 1/2 years is close to what VW recommend anyways.

Definitely sounds like a case of a greedy garage IMHO. My handbook actually says it doesn't need to be changed for 1st time until 120,000 miles, but of course VW brought in new guidelines since then.

If I remember correctly the original VW recommendation of 120k was a big error on their part and yes, it has been revised.

40k or 4 years is a bit more realistic isn't it!

If you have the cash now, get it done. I wouldn't say the garage are being greedy as such. Pointless splitting hairs over 6 months.

If you have a Inchcape VW nearby they are doing an offer on Cambelt changes for £299 and £349 for water pump at the same time (which is worthwhile). This is about the best price you're gonna get from a stealers.

Well, I'm sticking to Audi's policy which is every 5 years/75K on the exact same engine. Seems to me that the 4 years/60K is a bit of a money earner for VW...

The official line is 4 years for those pre September 2009 and 5 for those after. Although as said, they also recommend every 40,000, whichever comes first.
