Title: Track Rod Ends - replacing every 10,000 miles
Post by: monk180 on June 20, 2015, 10:30:31 pm
Hi Folks,

Firstly, apoloies I am starting a thread with an Oil Burner, an 05 GT 2.0 TDI

However the track rods ends are being worn and being replaced pretty much every 10k miles, I think in the MK5 there are 2 area's of weakness, the trad rod end - and some other part that connecting the steering rack to the wheels?

Awful knocking sound, going over small "pattering" bumps, and on the motorway can feel the car drift in and out of tram lines, without any steering input.

The car mainly does town drivng, and pots holes in country lanes. However had a Volvo 850, with 270k on the clock, and never had any of these issues.

What do you reckon?

Thanks
Freddie

Although I think much the same as the last poster.

Well I have not idea what it is.

When the car is stationary, and better if on tarmac, with engine off of steering lock off.

If you wobble the wheel left and right, there is a loud clonking, also the car will drift in about out of tramlines on the motorway with no steering input.

Thanks

Its  not a common issue. Ive had 3 mk5 (a5) platform cars and never had this.

Are you using genuinely track rod ends or cheapy replacements..?

I'd suspect your steering rack might be at fault here, causing extra load on the track rod ends. Have you ensured that the bushes are all in tact and the gaiters that seal things are all in tact? Also check the wishbone bushes too to make sure those aren't ecessively moving.
