Title: whats next?
Post by: The666 on June 29, 2015, 02:54:19 pm
So been thinking about selling my gti and getting something else since power is limited unless I get a k04 upgrade which I don't feel its worth the 2k+ for a front wheel drive. I'm actually looking for a awd car don't mind hatchback coupe or saloon. I'm leaning a bit more towards the s3's. What have you moved onto after the mk5 or what are you thinking to get next?

Budget: £12,000

Hard to find something as beautiful as the mk5 gti but just not a fan of fwd and now wanting a awd

would love to get a mk6 r but still to damn expensive and a r32 isn't really tuner friendly cant do much to it. Maybe the audi quattros or evo x.
So hard to make up my mind. Some recommendations will be much appreciated! thanks

You won't get much for £12k . Try an ED30 with a remap and i think you'll stick with the MK5 . An S3 is boring to drive and look at too .

s3 awesome when mapped stage2+ mate sold his r-tech mapped in sprint blue with leathers, milltek, helix paddle etc etc 362bhp with 60k miles for £12k and that was a fast car, fwd scrabbling for grip gets boring imo

Yep fwd scrabbling gets very booring and annoying hence why I wont mod my Gti as its fine how it is at 210bhp
Been there done that with big 300+ bhp fwd cars and never again!

Id go down the S3 route mate to be honest or possibly even the A3 Quattro S-Line  :happy2:

i'm currently @370bhp in my touran (s3 engine) and it's a waste of space in 1st and 2nd geard despite all the mods you can throw at the chassis, it sometimes starts wheel spinning midway through 4th in the wet which is hardly idea  :signLOL:

car needs quattro, my last 4 cars were quattro and i don't want to stay fwd  :sad1:

Yup really no point of going ed30 direction just got more power to burn more tyres
Do love the evo x but heard they are not very reliable and high maintenance.
Really want a s3 now can't decide if should go with 6mt or dsg. Currently got dsg and I love the crackle and pop sounds it makes even more after the remap and love the fact that you don't have to spend £1k on a clutch for a remap heard dsg clutch is good enough for up to stage 2+. But I really do miss driving a manual as that's what I've always been driving before I got the gti.
Don't know guys but its driving me mad 6mt vs dsg and s3 vs evo x  :sad1:

I would go for the S3 as i've seen plenty around the £13-14k mark and it will tick all the boxes,I have a MK6 R and love it,will be going Stage2+ next weekend and can't wait!

I guess you have never driven an ED30 with 300bhp as you would not be saying that . The Ed30 might get loff the mark slower than an S3 but being quite alot lighter it will catch up big time and handle so much better than an S3 .But it appears you just want to be quick off the lights !

Noope like me the guy likes to be able to nail it off a roundabout in 2nd onto a slip road joining a dual carriageway and not have to worry about lighting the front wheels up until he's in 4th gear

So the only point you safely get traction is when your at livence risking speeds hmmm sounds like great fun (not)
Fwd car 200 ish bhp 4wd and the sky is the limit hence why my Gti is standard  :P

yup gotta be either a tts, s3 or evo x. All come dual clutch transmission and manual except the evo x has 5 speed manual rather than 6 speed like the tts and s3. Which is your choice which car with which transmission?
Thanks for all the replies guys!

so 8 months down the line and I still have my gti lol. I have however just posted a ad for the sale. All this time I just couldn't really make up my mind on which to get...Still haven't really but I know I want out of the hatchback scene. probably going for a tts dsg but if I find a good spec bmw 335i that will be what I go for. 335i manual is very hard to find in good spec and after driving a dsg getting a steptronic sounds like a big downgrade.
Got a couple guys coming to check out the car tomorrow and Sunday. Hope to get new car within a week of selling.

I like the drama of mental FWD and scrabbling   I like to get my money's worth from the TC / ESP!  If they don't kick in, I'm not driving it hard enough

I went the other way, 4WD to FWD.  I found my R32s to be utterly boring and drama less, and much more understeery than the FWD MK5....especially with a remapped Haldex controller on it.  I think it's just the Haldex tbh.  All that extra weight for little benefit, in this country at least.  Off the line, yeah great.  At all other times, meh.  Funny thing was, a few winters ago, my R32 was no better in snow than a FWD golf. I kid you not.  4WD doesn't make you a cornering hero because it does not increase lateral grip....only traction.  You want something with torque vectoring like an Evo if you want proper 4WD fun.

ye I don't imagine there will be a huge difference on a dry day but in the rain you cannot pull off from the lights without getting a wheel spin and even worse in curvy roads traction control does not help. Just wish the r32 had a turbo or a cheap option to install a turbo.

I hear these remap to about 340bhp

Turboing an R32 is mega bucks to do properly.  The cheaper kits are proper 'buy cheap, buy twice' affairs, but they usually take the engine out with it, so you'll need another one of those as well.

Thing is though, I've 'raced' R32s off the line in the wet and the difference isn't as big as you'd think.  I'm no driving god but careful application of the gas and clutch action, nail it at the top of 2nd once the car has momentum and it's see ya later R32.  In a mapped ED30 I'm talking about.  You're talking a car length's difference if you're good, 2 - 3 if you're clumsy!

Guy on the tt forum paid £10,000 for a turbo kit and another £2 k fitting it so it's not cheap for a V6.

R32 are quick but as mentioned a good second gear will outrun him if you're mapped up right  :signLOL:

I've done it with my tt with misses and both kids in the back coming back from lake side one afternoon and the guy's in the R32 were right up my rear end and I said to son watch this with the misses sayimg no dont do it with the kids but did I listen  :signLOL:
dropped down to third and i was gone 8 car lengths and then disappeared but waited futher near the 50 cameras
My eldest was laughing and saying dad he's trying to come out the glass meaning scream.
When they finally caught up they opened passenger windon and asked me if I had de catted the tt because of the flames a foot long blowong out the dual exits which I never knew about for years  They aren't as fast as people think they are but a lot of noise IMHO  :rolleye: :driver:

You really want power??? Get an Evo 8-9 FQ 300 and above and you'll be smiling all day every day

ye evo 8s and 9s have crazy power and are fun to drive but the cars looks pre year 2000 to me. Service every 4.5k miles doesnt help either.

What model tt do you have? which mods. 8 car lengths from a r32 sounds close to gt-r like ability even more so with 4 people in the car.

I had a mk1 225 with a huge fmic, relentless down pipe de cat and cat back milltek system, 80mm Badger 5 tip, cone filter, forge 007 dv relocated to cold side, fully front and rear powerflex and poly bushes lowered 40mm for anti lift. remapped to 265 bhp and I'm not lying when I say I left him sniffing my exhaust fumes.

I took the forge dv off as it was leaking but that's my old tt beasty  :jumping: :driver:

I love the tt's and planning to get the tts but wish people would stop calling it a hairdressers or girls car  and even worse since I'm planning to get the dsg  :signLOL:

I actually had a race with a tts dsg on the a10 had mine in d with traction on. It barely got past me and it was stock vs my stage 1. Had a few runs beat me every time from a stand still at the lights only once I got ahead from a 40mph roll and it did catch back up and pass me.

though throughout the one year owning my gti dsg stage 1 I have taken out quite a few decent sporty cars like boxter s, 135i, a3 2.0t a5 3.0 tdi, 330i, tt 2.0t quattro, jaguar 3 litre dont know which one, astra vxr and a gtd probably a few other I cant remember

and gave it to a m4 which we were sbs till his twin turbo kicked in and was goneeeee! same happened with a rs6 I thought it was a regular a6 estate  :signLOL:

so I've had plenty of good memories with my gti and now it's time to move on

I really and yes I also mention her in almost every thread as she was the ONE who never let me down 5 years strong with little hick ups like thermostat temp sensor rear wheel bearing rear brake calipers clutch after two years of owning her and all those items are wear and tear items over time not like everyday issues and what you'd expect from an X reg with 100k when I bought her for £6000.
She was the one that got away as it was her or the little baby so I chose baby
If I had a place to store her I would have kept her :signLOL:

Mate don't worry about what those fools say as it's one lovely car to have if you pick the right one as I did. Dsg 3.2 are very cheap now. £4k for a 100k model or even less miles if you look around as I was doing the other day  :happy2:

There's one for sale in the tt forum and it looks a minter with full service etc.

I do like it. Right colour for a mk1, nice wheels, and sounds like you did a good job on the power front. I always remember the old ABT kit for the mk1 too, they looked sweet.

How do you find the TFSI compared to the 1.8T? I always found them a bit lazy and dare I say a little bit boring, even though you could get decent power from them.

My k03 GTI feels much sharper, torquier, and makes nicer noises than a comparible 1.8T. And that includes a 280bhp BAM with anti-lag and all the works I had a ride in round Oulton!

also another reason I'm a little bored of my gti is I have run out of nice country curvy roads around London  :sad1:

running the same laps over and over with the same car it just feels to easy and the fun is gone thats why I'm after something new

So what about you guys that live in or around London any nice bendy roads to have a blast on?  :driver:

Your comments are taken with a pinch of salt  :drinking:  or img no way lol
Wish I still had mine to show you how better it sounded than the tfsi not standard of course but still sounded good foot off throttle  with the milltek it was awesome and felt the difference immediately as with all the other mods I fitted before the remap. down side was that I paid £210 inc customs charged for the delay 630 injectors I didn't fit as I would of been pushing a little more than 265 with those and maybe even WMI and then the hybrid k04 I almost bought before having to sell up it would have been a monster

ABT wasn't something I liked as there was nothing but a yellow banana with a wide body and kit that looked  to look at and didn't even come with decent power for the price either. thumbs down I'm afraid  :signLOL:

I'd defo have my tt again sad I know but hey its a beast with 4wd

Yes they so seem lazy as they're carrying around the rear diff front transfer box and a prop shaft as baggage  :signLOL: but when mapped with the right tools fitted the game play changes and you're flying past other cars who think your basically sitting in a girly car :stupid: fools don't know what they're in for. Only car to ever kick my  :booty: was a leon cupra 64 plate and oh yeah and the RS4 down the M1 one night  :signLOL:

Golf is sharper with the response but again it's fwd which is a beech.

passat is naturally aspirated so how can it get a 100hp gain over a stage 1 makes no sense to me.

You've lost me!

The Passat is a 3.6L that came with 300bhp out the box 40ish bhp gain from a map

I doubt you will get a extra 40bhp with just a basic map. This is the reason people go out to buy a 335i over a m3. Naturally aspirated is just not good to mod and cant get much out of. The m3 is na and the 335i is twin turbo which you can get around 100hp from a stage 1 tune.

Just my £0.02 but I'm a big fan of manual Audi V8's, which are a dying breed. Turbo hatches will be around for years, but manual V8 AWD Audis? Not so much.

If you can stretch the budget slightly, I'd be looking at a S5. You need to hear the V8 rumble to appreciate it (especially when mated to an aftermarket exhaust).

they look nice they sound nice but seriously underpowered for a v8 that was meant to compete with m3.

I'd say the RS range is more the competitor for m3/5 etc. S5 would match up with the 335.

Still I would rather have a tuner friendly car. Keep it stock for a few months then slowly mod to keep me from getting bored of it.

I think the 3.6 produces a little more than 300bhp standard and makes just under 340 with a map, http://www.r36owners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=12

Even a JB4'd 335i is no comparison to an M3.....100 extra bhp or not

I'd say the RS range is more the competitor for m3/5 etc. S5 would match up with the 335.

passat is naturally aspirated so how can it get a 100hp gain over a stage 1 makes no sense to me.

I think the 3.6 produces a little more than 300bhp standard and makes just under 340 with a map, http://www.r36owners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=12

Even a JB4'd 335i is no comparison to an M3.....100 extra bhp or not

335i jb4 would probably be faster in a drag race than a m3 but on the track you're right no competition.

Still I would rather have a tuner friendly car. Keep it stock for a few months then slowly mod to keep me from getting bored of it.

I can understand that!

Not suggesting this is at all sensible, but if I didn't need 4 doors and a big boot I'd be considering doing something similar to this fella, Cuppa, over on RS246 and A5OC. 600hp supercharged S5! Better than an RS5 not only because of the extra power but the fact you get a manual box.

His build thread is a good read:

damn that looks good. I would love to have something like that. Well you can go for a s4 3.0 v6 supercharged revo stage 1+ takes it up to around 440bhp thats 4 doors and plenty boot space. I would love that but its slightly out of my budget, you can get a good one for around 17k manual probably even cheaper.

all comes down to what you want from the car, if you want to tune it then it's got to be turbo'd as the cost vs performance gain on a naturally aspirated engine can get ridiculous.

Audi TT can look like a hair dressers car BUT the right spec or exterior upgrades can easily change this, also the Audi TT is a nice place to be inside but not really any good if you want to carry more than 1 passenger.

Audi s3 is a very good all round car, plenty of tuning options, very practical and look nice but there's a lot of them around and most of them look the same, there easily blended in with other cars in traffic if you no what I mean.

BMW 335i is a beast of a car, quite rare In manual, never heard anything bad about the auto box in them but never heard anything good either. The one I drove ages ago felt quite stiff. Probably going to be dearer to insure than the above 2 as its rwd and also won't be as economical.

Hairdressing  :surprised: :scared:

This hairdresser took on a 335 on the A13 coming towards Limehouse link and took him on every light as he thought his car was better and i had a shi** old car and he's is a 64 plate. what a pri** he opened his window and to ask me what I'm powering under the hood and I replied nothing compared to yours and laughed in his face  :signLOL:

yup 335i gearboxes are solid but most of the ads on autotrader have hfhp's and turbos replaced, checked bimmerpost for reliability and many of the 335i owners said make sure you get warranty if you buy it. This kind of put me off. No point of warranty for me since I will like to remap it get exhaust etc. I was after the n54 twin turbo engine the n55 is slightly over my budget.

It's really hard to decide what to get after a gti mkv dsg. Also seeing a lot of previous mkv gti owners coming back for more like yourself.

at this point I can easily up my budget and get a golf r or rs3 but doesn't make sense to pay soo much money for a car when I don't own a house yet :(

Thanks very much!

The A4 was good and had lots of potential; 211hp standard, but 350+ easily achieved with a turbo swap and map.

It looks good too and has lots of rear space (a lot more than my B7).

On the negative side, it sounds like a hairdryer as standard.

I never spent the money on it I ought to have though (e.g. Exhaust, intake, suspension, brakes), because I knew I wanted an RS4. Only significant thing I did was a revo map to about 285hp.

So 2 people have come to see the car and tried to negotiate the f*ck out of me even though this is the lowest price black dsg 5dr under 80k miles I have decided not to sell her and go for a stage 1+ r-tech with stage 1 dsg remap too  :happy2:

I've decided to pay for the deposit for the flat and instead spend some on tuning the car rather than paying a extra 10k on top of sale price to get a better car.

Before the buyers came the previous night I took it for a blast down forty hill just off the a10 curvy roads which made me remember how much I love this car.

So question has anyone got a r-tech stage 1+ done? how much should I be looking to spend on the r-tech site it states:
Stage 1+= Stock car with just cats removed  hpfp upgrade & air filter upgrade
Stage 1+ tuning aim is to unlock the mid-range torque band which is limited by the stock pump at stage1
Stage 1+ custom remap           255-260 hp        335-350 lbft
Custom Stage 2 &  2+ TFSI (I think this is for 1+ too) = £350 (any thing with decat or sports cat added or HPFP)
VAG DSG  Gearbox mapping = £250 but when if carried out at same time as the engine tuning the price will be £150

How much should I be looking to spend in total and would r-tech do the pre-cat removal for me because so far to date I haven't been able to find a garage which will do this.

Will make a new topic for this sorry don't reply here

Love the shape of the E92, as much as I've never really had a big love for Beemers. Wouldn't mind a nice E30 M3 though..!

Any plans for the new motor then? They look ridiculously good with a nice set of Y-spokes and a proper stance. 335 should be a grunty engine too.

my main priority is to get it all blacked out first :) black grill, black 19 rims, tinted windows and maybe tinted lights not to sure about that yet.
Once the cosmetics is done then straight on to tuning. Downpipe, intake and jb4 should do the trick of around 420hp and 420tq according guys on the bimmer forum.

looks wise I'm aiming for it to look like

Is jb4 a tuning box, from the US? Rings a bell, pretty sure Nige was singing their praises when I was chatting with him at Powervalve hq a few weeks ago.

420bhp will be lovely. I'm not a huge fan of black wheels, I'd go for anthracite if it was me, but we all have different tastes!

for sure if I was going for a classy look I would also go for the anthracite but I want it to look sporty and at the same time a little evil :D
Yup jb4 is from the US http://www.burgertuning.com/jb4_pnp_BMW_performance_tuner.html I don't really know myself but kinda seems similar to bluefin superchips but with a ton more customizations.

and I'm already missing the gti that I'm thinking to get back to one probably a ed30. This car is soo f*cking heavy its annoying doesn't feel nimble like the gti cant cut in and out of traffic as easy.
on the plus side the noise from the twin turbo v6 is just f*cking amazing. The speed yes its fast but it really kicks in after 60mph its all in or nothing. You don't feel as fast as the gti even though its probably quite a bit faster. It's too comfortable imo I don't like that the suspension needs to be stiffer.

Got to say as an owner of a 330bhp LSD equipped Pirelli this statement is inaccurate. Mine has none of the issues you cite as impediments of FWD. I don't have as much torque and power as the seemingly most popular tuner mentioned on this forum that's not Revo can provide but I have a very nice smooth map. An LSD isn't the only thing that's responsible for my tuning package working so well but it's an example of an extremely worthwhile transformative MOD that most don't do because of the expense and the fact that it can't be taken off and sold.

Title: Re: whats next?
Post by: The666 on March 30, 2016, 08:16:43 pm
I'm loving it now. Most of the 335's have the wastegate rattle issue and mines been sorted. Couldn't be happier. Though I wouldn't recommend the autovogue kit if you live in a place with a lot of speed bumps. I'm gonna be tuning it soon once the dealer warranty runs out and should be looking at around 400bhp+ and 400tq+ with just the tune and a downpipe. got my tints on got my blacked gloss grill and now just waiting to put on some alloys and I will have a few pics up soon. Go for it mate it's a great car but just make sure you inspect it with someone that understands these cars.

But having said that if I would rather have a ed30 dsg 4 door just a more practical car. Another but is that in the 335 I don't feel like boosting it all the time most of the time I'm just chill it's too damn comfy :D I will see how I feel after the warranty runs out if I would want to tune or px for a ed30.

Sounds like it's grown on you then. 400 through the rear is going to mental, Michelin  supersports a must. I'm staying with my 3 door eddie for now. The more I see and hear how good mk7R's are the more I want one. Just waiting for the prices to come down, which I think they will eventually as It seems VW have mass produced a lot more from say the 6R which are still megabucks for a low miler.

That's the thing with the steptronic and the traction control on the 335 I get no wheelspins even if I stomp on it from a stand still. Taking a fast turn I feel like I've got the same grip as a quattro. Not the same with the manuals though.
Personally I think the 6r looks better than the 7r and is what I want my next car to be. Though having some time in the 335 I don't know if I will go back to a hatchback.

I've been looking at a 335i myself recently as a change to my stock GTI.

Did you notice any major changes in costs between the two? i.e. fuel, servicing, parts etc.?

I think the fact that you keep stating you want the ed30 is now talking me out of it already  :signLOL:

It takes some getting used to mate. The 335i is a much heavier car and it feels that way too. I can't really say its the faster 0-60 than my old stage 1 gti which was 326tq compared to 335i stock of 301tq but after 60 is when the car really comes alive  :driver: I used to really love the upshift fart on my dsg but the 335i has a much better exhaust note even from the stock exhaust or you can do the golf tee mod which costs nothing, all you do is disconnect 1 cable from the boot and you have a much louder exhaust.

There are a couple reasons I said I would like to get a ed30, 1. Being that it has 4 doors which is just more practical. Sure there are 335s that have 4 doors but don't look good. 2. With the 335i you cant filter through traffic like you can on the gti.

On the plus side it's a bimmer and you don't look like a kid :) you don't get fiestas revving their engine at you. No one is trying to challenge you. You just don't seem like that nutter that is about to do something dangerous :D  The bimmer has made me a more calmer driver I sometimes just cruise and relax. On the gti I was on attack mode all the time  :jumping:

Having said all that if I had a good px offered to me for a ed30 dsg I might still take it.

Thanks for the info buddy!

I'm always on the look out just like everyone else so every time I see a nice A5 or 335i I think abot buying one...

335i with an older driver pulled off next to me at a roundabout on Monday and even though he wasn't even putting the foot to the floor the noise was incredible!

I've my eye on a really nice one but the price is still €17k so I'll wait a while and see if it drops!

at that price it's probably a n55 engine not the twin turbo n54. if you want the twin turbo go for models before 09.
