just wondering if you guys can show me options for changing the number plate on my car, it has a bulky plastic holder with the number plate attatched to it and spoils the front in my opinion, what you got and where from, thanks
-
Raised carbon letters are legal and look nice mate.
-
I used (and now have for sale) a us front grill with no number plate plinth.
Means you can use smaller plates if you want etc
-
for some reason im digging square plates under the headlight, alfa style.
-
I think there was somebody on here who did that but to me it looks .

Yes a Black Pirelli GTi (paul), WhiteGTi's mate
-
i think that really suits strats car, i prefer it to small plates personally, but then i like the look of standard plates :chicken:

I hate square plates (not stickers) attached to one side - They draw too much attention and look like an afterthought
Yes a Black Pirelli GTi (paul), WhiteGTi's mate
....WhiteGTI's is/was a sticker number plate - Not strictly legal.
I dropped my whole front plate in Wolverhampton and excluded a plate mount when I fixed my new (legal) plate.
There's a write up and pics here : - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2081.0
HTH
-
I am currently fitting the U.S grill with shortened but still legal plate as I have a 5 digit plate. pics tomorrow :happy2:
-
RedRobin your plate is awesome - would love to do that to the front of my car but looks complicated and I'd probably cock it up! :xmassmiley:
-
Benje i have put my number plate under the driver side headlight like someone else on here because i jus got the us style smooth grille and i am trying to avoid putting the plate back on the front... because like you said it looks better without it on the front...
i know 9 out of ten people probable wont like it but i decided to give it a go....
another option is what i might do is to put plate back on front but lower down... maybe half way down the smooth grill part...
il post some pics in a min to give u an idea how mine looks... :happy2:
-
Here u go Benje...

Chavs also like White wheels..... :P and red wheels...... :P......OPPSS!!!!!! i had red wheels too :sad1:....guess theirs a bit of chav in all off us...... :signLOL:
but back to the thread il be putting plate back in centre but lower down benje so il post pics to give u an idea of how it will look in real life.....
But beaware benje that if you take bulky plate holder off you will have marks and scratches around were the outer edge of holder was sitting on top of smooth part of grill as well as the four holes....so u should probably buy a smooth grill before you remove it.... :happy2:
-
2/3rds sized plate , no holder :happy2: (non legal!) , either in OE place (me), or lower down in grille looks good too (Greenouse)
the advantage of in grille is that its removable for shows
-
to the side looks
If you want to keep the centre area free then I would say to put it on the lower honeycomb grille at the same height as the fog lights. Seen a couple of people do it that way.
-
i think thats awesome.. (the side look)
:happy2: about the vinyl plate under the headlight
im sure regal(was it regal?) had a vinyl plate?
-
Voila!

^^^ Great pic there smiler! :congrats: :happy2:

i relocated my plate because i got the carbon fibre grill and didn't want to cover that over with a number plate.
i know some people don't rate it but i actually think it looks decent especially with the xenon lights on. whenever i drive past a shop window head on, i think, f*ck me, thats one mean look mutha! haha
i must admit there is a chav who runs a silver corsa in my town with a square plate, but he's got a corsa and im driving a GTI Pirelli, so .... at the end of the day he can scoff me off! :booty:
here's a couple of pics of mine for the original poster to help him decide:

@ Scarpicus...............
I drilled two tiny holes in the plate and attached it with teeny tiny tie wraps. Was only going to be tempory but I liked it. :happy2:
I may have issues with cooling in very hot weather as it may block some air going to the rad. If so I can move it!

The type of car does not dictate whether someone is a chav or not mate. Its what they do to it that makes it chavvy.
If you think he is a bit of a chav for having a square plate, then I would tend to agree. However, I would look at any car with a square plate that never came from the factory with one and think it was chavvy, regardless of whether it was a Corsa, a Golf or a BMW. Each to their own, but I think you have ruined the look of the front of your car with that plate. Sorry.
-
Loved this on mine a while ago.. Very much not legal though, even though you could read it way easier than any of the messed about it plates, of which most people get away with!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fo304%2Fjonnnny28%2FAvatarED30.jpg&hash=e32202c7a9f5d670da897d67f352815be7395805)
Unfortunately I was stopped twice in 3 days, so decided to take it off, as it had already cost me £60 lol..
-
To be fair to Strat, whilst his choice of front number plate solution is not to my tastes (although I'm sure my plate isn't to his liking either!), it does look better in real life. The problem with those photos is because he has blanked out all of the digits, it just looks like a very lost, random and misplaced white square....
-
Voila!

so would u say its not wise to put the plate halfway down smooth grill part so would only block half of honeycomb part or would that be ok
-

No, I was saying that he is a chav who happens to drive a car with a square plate. I wasn't saying anyone who drives a car with a square plate is a chav because that would mean I would be calling myself a chav, when in reality I couldn't be further from one. The fact is a square plate on a gti works because the car is good enough to enable one to get away with it. It's a shame your so quick to judge someone based on the shape of their number plate. :congrats:
Luckily, I haven't ruined the look of the front of my car because that would require some sort of permenent alteration, which this is not.
Chris is right in that the car looks a lot better in reality. I can certainly vouch for the fact that I get a lot of positive comments about the car which includes the look with the plate, so it isn't as devasting to it's looks as some people love to point out. In actual fact I think it gets more attention because it doesn't look like every other GTI out there!
Be different I say, you can't be the don by being the same as everyone else!

I'M The Don :fighting:........you know y.........

is joesgti still running commando on the front so to speak ?
He was John but I think he got stopped in Spain of all places when he was driving to Portugal! The local fed's escorted him to the nearest garage and made the mechanics there drill number plate holes through his nice shiny unmolested carbon grill and screw the plate on!
He doesn't have much look with the five-o does our Joe, ask him about the tire incident last week :xmassmiley:

crikey :surprised:

yeah had it taken off about 2 weeks ago Whitegti.....just wanted a new look..... :happy2:
