Title: Steering is twitching/notchy
Post by: raptor_tom22 on July 07, 2015, 01:34:02 pm
Hi all, having a few issues with the steering on my 2005 GTI. while driving along especially on slow bends the steering has a twitch to it almost feels like it is trying to correct itself as your driving along. The track rod ends and shock top bearings have been replaced and the steering re-tracked afterwards but the problem is still there! has anyone expereinced this or any ideas on possible faults/solutions? also the steering fluid is at the correct level and i have no warning lights of any kind.

Sounds like a potential issue with the motor on the rack if it feels like it's twitching and correcting itself, that sort of feeling could only come from something motorised I reckon.

Have you had it scanned on VCDS? (I am not sure this would throw anything up).

Not tried VCDS yet hopefully get it checked next week and see if it flags anything up.

Did a garage tell you this?

It's an interesting point as the mk5 golf has servo-assisted power steering.. not hydraulic, so no fluid reservoir

Regarding your issues, I felt a similar problem when I borrowed a set of wheels from a garage.. turns out the tyres were unevenly worn due to being on a car for a while which had bad tracking.  Your tyres worn evenly?

I'd start with the free/cheap options first.

Get tyres checked and wheels for flat spots

Get underneath with a pry bar and lever suspension components and see if there's play in anything

Also worth checking springs for any broken coils

Scan it with vag com an see if it throws up any faults, maybe even try a steering angle reset? Think I've read something like that can be done on vag com.

Also I no you've said it's had new parts fitted but poorly fitted parts or cheap aftermarket parts could also cause issues
