Title: Timing Chain kit
Post by: Pesky jones on July 08, 2015, 12:51:56 pm
So at some point I'm going to have to replace the timing chain due to the diesel noise and me being paranoid about it slipping etc.

I'm going to get a garage to do the replacement for me, as I don't think i'll be able to. I've also emailed Volkswagen to get a price on the chain, tensioner and bolt, and also how much for them to fit it.

If it is considerably more expensive to get it genuine from Volkswagen, ill use one of the following kits and get an indpedent specialist to fit the hit.

Any comments guys?

I'm just in the process of getting mine replaced by my pal who has his own vw specialist garage, so I will let you know how much it costs. All parts are from volkswagen and I think the chain was £40 tensioner is about £90 bolts a couple of quid plus labour. Mine was sounding terrible, like a tractor with no engine oil bad!

Brilliant that would be great if you could let me know. I've heard that if you get the adjuster done as well, then with labour you won't get much change from a grand! The adjuster is ridiculously expensive however. I don't think il get the adjuster done.

Yep the adjustor is expensive, but many people have not changed it and still had the diesel sound.
I'm gonna get mine changed for peace of mind.

I've also read a few posts where people haven't changed it and its been fine. I havn't actually seen or met anyone that hasn't changed it and still had the noise.

If I get it all changed, and it still makes the noise, then i'll have to cough up for the adjuster and extra labour, but at least the cost will be spread out. Fingers cross I don't even need to!

I have the dreaded rattle.after engine is warm so I expect to have to change these parts next Monday at service hopefully the labour cost isn't too much

I'd get the valve cover gasket as well.

I was told that it's a rubber gasket and could be reused but was going to order another one anyway any idea of that price if the gasket ?

Personally I'd never reuse one, at a guess I'd say about £15.

Well if that is the case then that's good to know, might be able to save myself some money, have to wait and see.

Well I got a scary email today from VW:

To replace the Cam chain the Prices are as follows :

Chain Pic 2 Item 3         : 06D109229B   £66.50 inc vat
Tensioner Pic 2 Item 4   : 06F109217A   £101.14 inc vat
Bolt Pic 2 Item 7            : 06D109281D  £3.42 inc vat
Sealant Pic 1 Item 10     : D154 103A1   £68.94 inc vat
Parts Total                                               £240.00

If Item 6 In picture 2 The Camshaft adjuster is required it only comes with Item 15A Picture 1

Camshaft Adjuster Pic 1 Item 15A  06F198088D £438.40 inc vat

Parts Total Including Item 6  : £678.40

The labour to replace the cam chain is quoted at 2.5 Hours so £345.00 including vat

I’m thinking that I’ll get the chain and tensioner for £166  from VW and take them to an independent VW specialist, and see what labour cost they’ll give me.

Hopefully around 250, so all in all around 400

Apparently so. Is this not a fixed price everywhere?

I've no idea, I avoid main dealers if I can help it. I knew that they charged a lot but had no idea it was that much!

no idea why the quote included sealant.

Thanks dazza

It's funny, I started of adamant that I wouldn't attempt this myself, but im considering it now.

But then I remember trying to get the fuel lines back into the pump, and think - fark that.
