Probably been covered before, but what upgrades are there for the R32/R/S3 that use the 310mm rear brakes from the factory? I've only ever really seen 2 modifications which is a Forge Motorsport kit or the rear brakes from a Cayenne/R8/Gallardo, both of which are a little pricey!
Is there truth in using a larger 330mm rear discs from some sort of Audi? Just want to work out a good, non-bank braking way of being able to bank on my brakes (I'm here all week). :happy2:
-
I'm looking for a R32/R20 rear brake setup. If you find anything better, give me a price for yours.
In your place I'd look into an used Cayenne/R8/Gallardo rear brakes. A friend of mine has it in his Golf mk5 GTI APR Stage 3.
-
I'll certainly look at what's involved, ideally a set up that wouldn't require spacers is ideal as I'm doing some maths at the moment and figured I can run staggered offsets/widths which will keep my current track unaltered. But I'm not completely against running rear spacers.

He has replica Detroits that are 8J and ET35, with 25 mm wider front wings from SRS Tec and rear rolled arches.

There is one more kind of an upgrade, two piece rear rotors from VWRacing. Pricey though!
@Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590) - If you're after the R32 setup you should try these part numbers from TRW, they are the same as the OEM ones (TRW is the producer). I found them really cheap: :happy2:
TRW BDA690 - R32 caliper carrier rear left
TRW BDA691 - R32 caliper carrier rear right
TRW BHS938 - R32 caliper rear left
TRW BHS939 - R32 caliper rear right

Combine them with Zimmerman Coat Z discs and that's it!
-
There is a 335mm disc upgrade from an Audi which I believe uses the same r32 caliper. I think it requires a hub change tho.
-
@teo_parvu (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11916) Well, you convinced me to get the brakes now. Got the calipers and the right carrier from an ebay shop: http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/partsrunner (http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/partsrunner). And ordered the left carrier from Mister Auto: http://www.mister-auto.pt/pt/suporte-pinca-de-travao/trw-bda690_g1009_a161BDA690.html (http://www.mister-auto.pt/pt/suporte-pinca-de-travao/trw-bda690_g1009_a161BDA690.html).
Total (with shipping) of 337,92 €. :happy2:
I think I'll order EBC Redstuff for the rear as well. Just need to find the discs now.
PS: Mister Auto required a deposit for the calipers, to be returned when I returned my old calipers, which I don't have. The ebay shop didn't have the left carrier.

Rear brake discs ZIMMERMANN Sport Coat Z 310 mm from Oscaro.es: http://www.oscaro.es/juego-de-2-discos-de-freno-otto-zimmermann-gmbh-100-3309-52-3608531-82-p (http://www.oscaro.es/juego-de-2-discos-de-freno-otto-zimmermann-gmbh-100-3309-52-3608531-82-p).
I'll order the pads from a local shop.
-
Super! This is what I've got, they are the same as OEM. :happy2:
Except one thing, the slotted rotors are prone to cracks, I've got these:
Zimmerman 100.3309.20

I've made the request to Oscaro.es to modify my order. I hope they read it before they process my initial order.

Now we have the same setup. :)
This improves stability under hard braking!

@teo_parvu (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11916) Thank you for your help! :drinking:
What pads do you recommend? Ferodo DS2500?
-
Yes, DS2500 is what I'm using.
It is a good idea to have rear pads with a lower friction coefficient than the fronts. So you have a bit of oversteer under braking. ;)
@Shoduchi (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10590) - Forgot to mention that it is the same pad as the one you have now. Gti and R32 rear brakes are using the same pads.

Hmm, I like the idea of a full Cayenne brake set up... As much as I'd love VW Racing front brakes, the cost of those compared to upgrading all the brakes all round against VWR ones, just means the Cayenne upgrade makes sense!

I didn't know that... Searched EBC official site and it didn't have any pads for the R32 rear brakes but they list all for the GTI. :rolleye:
So I ended up ordering the DS2500 from here: http://www.nh-tuning.de/Brake-technologys/Ferodo-Bremsbelaege/Ferodo-DS-2500/Hinterachse/VW/Ferodo-DS-2500-Bremsbelaege-Hinterachse-VW::132335.html (http://www.nh-tuning.de/Brake-technologys/Ferodo-Bremsbelaege/Ferodo-DS-2500/Hinterachse/VW/Ferodo-DS-2500-Bremsbelaege-Hinterachse-VW::132335.html).
Oscaro.es didn't have Zimmermann standard Sport Coat Z discs, just perforated, so I changed my order for the normal ATE discs: http://www.oscaro.es/juego-de-2-discos-de-freno-ate-24-0122-0219-1-1767650-82-p (http://www.oscaro.es/juego-de-2-discos-de-freno-ate-24-0122-0219-1-1767650-82-p).
I got EBC Redstuff for the Brembo 18Z front calipers. Now I'm not sure if they'll go well with the DS2500 in the rear.
-
It will be ok don't worry, DS2500 are not that aggressive 0,42 friction coef compared to EBC Red Stuff 0,5. :happy2:
You'll also get better cooling from the vented disks.
Can't wait for your first impressions. They will need 200/300 km to bed in properly. :driver:
-
Nice. I can't wait to have all done and the car back in my hands. :driver:
I've ordered the R32 dust shields too (5N0615611E and 5N0615612E), to have a complete OEM look.

No, they will fit fine on normal hubs. ;)
They'll fit perfect on yours too.

AFAIK only one bolt might not fit properly, so it may be required to drill an hole for it to fit perfectly. :happy2:

I might go down this route you know, looking at costs and it's crazy not to! So far I've found these on eBay...
Fronts:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281729609971?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Rears:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231610832790?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Need to work out discs, pads, adaptors and lines now! But so far calipers and refurbs looks to be less than £1000, my mission will to be to get both front and rear set ups for less than the cost of VW Racing front 6 piston brakes.
Saying that:
http://www.awesomegti.com/car/vw/golfmk6/ecs-stage-5-big-brake-kit-drilled-grooved-358x32mm
Could be a winner, just get the rears at a later date to match the ECS Tuning kit.
If anyone's got a how-to guide for doing this kit, PLEASE let me have it as I'll need as much info as possible. May even fit these myself to save more money, rude not to now I have a full work shop at my disposal!

It's better to get the pads for the Brembo 17Z calipers since they match perfectly with the 350 mm ML discs. I got the EBC Redstuff for the 17Z (DP31521C).
You can get the calipers, adaptors and brake lines from this shop: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151515479484 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151515479484)
Addiction Motorsport has all that you need but not all items have the best price available. The store also recommends to get the smaller pads (DS2500 FCP1625H) for the 18Z: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111049676173 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111049676173).

What about the HB caliper? I know it does FA but it looks

I didn't get the HB nor the FA... Sorry dazza.
-
Handbrake caliper? I posted about them a while back as someone on vortex had a group buy on the brackets think they were using Cayenne calipers and a Handbrake caliper from an R8 or jag.
FA = f*ck All.

Right! :happy2:
Yeah, the HB caliper should be from an R8. Not sure if the bracket wasn't a custom order from a latte...

@dazza (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=10457) - http://www.creationsmotorsport.com/product-detail.php?pid=667
Found this while on a massive Google search last night. I e-mailed them to find out about whether you can fit a Brembo HB rather than use the stock OE caliper (as mentioned in the description). Brembo HB:
http://www.brembo.com/en/Van/Original-Equipment/Products/Pages/Freno-di-stazionamento.aspx
And for info, I've used PW Motorsport before, they're top guys! Trouble is, I'd like my calipers in matching colours and both in blue so I'll probably buy some calipers that need a refurb and get them done myself.
So much for the Golf R staying stock!
-
Also, if anyone can find where to get parking brakes from, that'd be great. So far I can only find a set of Aston Martin ones in the USA at $600 before shipping!
-

Brembo HB caliper part numbers i think 22.5921.03 22.5921.04
-
Thanks for those part numbers, will be a massive help. If they work with the brackets from Creation Motorsport I'll probably take the plunge and order some used Aston Martin ones, as I'll get all 3 sets of calipers completely refurbished.
This is getting g silly now, its supposed to stay stock FFS...
-
Everybody sais they'll stay stock, and then "somebody stop me!!!"

With 3 sets of calipers i think you'll be in the price territory of AP Racing or VWR.

I certainly will be, but the cost of those fronts alone will be the same as front and rear upgrades if I do most of the sourcing and work myself, plus I can spread the cost over some months.
If all else fails, I'll use the brackets that allow the use of the stock rear discs and calipers (as the hand brake) and then fit the 4 piston rear as well. Works out cheaper.
-
Hmmm, I'd choose to keep the R rears and get a serious front kit.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Well the kit from Creation Motorsport allows you to use the stock caliper as the hand brake and keep the stock 310mm disc, but mount 4 piston brakes that do the actual braking. I'm sourcing a set of 6 piston fronts to use as we speak, seeing as this plan has gone from just an idea to a definite build. Bigger brakes are never overkill as long as they're not excessively large. The number of times my larger brakes on my GTI saved my bacon has made me want to do it as modification number one, as in the words of Revo "power is nothing without control". True that!
-
Totally agree about the need of bigger brakes, but I never felt the need for bigger than 310mm discs + OEM 41mm pot caliper + Carbotech XP10 pads rears (maybe because I'm FWD, the rear is lighter), but I've definitely felt the need for bigger fronts. I've boiled the brake fluid so many times on track that I've lost count (RBF660, SRF), the rears were fine, but even the AP Racing 6 pot fronts have overheated.
Now I'm in the process of building some ducts.
Any way, as long as you keep the balance, the rears to have less braking power than the fronts, so you can induce some oversteer entering the corner (trailbraking), it is a nice upgrade.
-
See, I'm in a 4motion so the rears do a bit more of the braking than in a FWD (in theory). More to the point, it's just a learning exercise as no-one really does it so it's probably worth documenting so others can do it if they wish. We're spoilt for choice when it comes to front brakes but very little on rears.
Having said that, I do need to look into the Audi RS4 330mm rear upgrade and see what's involved as well, mainly for the sake of knowing. Think I read somewhere that it requires a hub conversion but could be wrong...
The other thing I need to try and work out is wheel clearance. Does anyone know if Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2's will clear the front/rear calipers that we're talking about here, or will I need a 5/8/10mm spacer? Was kind of thinking I'll need 5mm front and rear but if anyone knows that'd be a time saver!
