Get it scanned with VCDS http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,88875.0.html and see what it shows as I've had a few strange things happen when this item fails

Have scanned it at work with our snap on top of the range scanner but there are no codes stored

With the engine running and the aircon on low are both fans running?

Yes both fans kick in when turn aircon on and then they go off when I turn it off

Assuming there's plenty coolant and your thermostat and inline stats are ok I would look at the auxiliary coolant pump
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Volkswagen_Golf_GTI_Mk_V/33-WATER-Electric_Coolant_Pump_Replacement/33-WATER-Electric_Coolant_Pump_Replacement.htm
With VCDS you can run and test the pump in output test etc and check system values for temperatures.

Just done a battery test with a computer from work and it says bad and replace
Would this have anything to do with it
