Title: Pioneer SPH DA120 - apple CarPlay

anyone use one of these and pleased with it?!

I had one of the next models up... F960DAB with Carplay.

its a cool feature and easy to use etc.      Just be aware that the Pioneer Avicsycn function which is supposed to allow you to add apps to your headunit has never come into reality.. They keep saying it will, but over a year down the line its still not here.

http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/newsroom/news/AVICSYNC/page.html

Apart from that, the Pioneer headunits are very good and easily installed with the correct SOT loom.

Thanks Aidi.

I'm not fussed about other apps. All I want is something that I can use for calls and music from my phone, and use to navigate.

Think I will probably go for it. Easier to install than RNS/RCD510 which is what I was also looking at - given no need for new canbus/bluetooth install/vcds coding.

I installed my SPH-DA120 this week - only took about half an hour (although I still need to tidy up the microphone cabling). Sound quality is a huge improvement over the standard RCD300, even using standard speakers. The display is very good too. I wanted to stream music and answer calls via Bluetooth, then use Carplay for satnav/audio duties on longer journeys. So far I'm very impressed - seems a no brainer for iPhone users (assuming you won't miss using CD's). I paid £280 for the HU from Amazon, then £60 for a CTKVW01 VW fitting kit from Dynamic Sounds.

Good choice of head unit, where did you run the microphone? Do these have DAB?

I placed the mic at the top of the driver-side pillar, then ran the cable down and under the steering wheel - as shown in this guide:  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=151928.msg1391615#msg1391615

And nope, the SPH-DA120 doesn't have DAB.

CTKVW01 VW fitting kit from Dynamic Sounds.

Do you have a photo of the CTKVW01 fitted to your car?  From the photos of the fitting kit it looks like the fascia is in two parts - one that screws into the dash and some sort of 'cover' plate.  Is this how it works?

What is the colour / material match like to the rest of the dash?

If we use this photo for reference:  https://d11tezxtmr089.cloudfront.net/image/cache/data/products/Fitting%20Kits/Volkswagen/ctkvw01-1-840x840.jpg

The cage slides through the plastic mount which is then screwed into the dash. The outer facia then clips around the edge once the head unit is installed. Colour/material/texture etc. is all a very good match. The lighting in the photo below makes it look slightly darker than the surrounding plastic, but in reality it isn't.

Thanks adamski - very helpful.  I'm looking at a Kenwood, which comes to £330 Inc the fitting kit, I was also contemplating a used Kenwood dnx521 which doesn't need a fascia, but they are about £450-500 used.

From your photo I think I'll go for the cheaper option as I think it looks great.

Hi guys

Does anyone know if the pioneer da120 maps on CarPlay need 3G to function? So if you're trying to navigate in an area you're not covered in or your data allowance is low(!) can you still use this function?

Quite like the look of this and some of the other pioneer touch screen systems.

I wondered this and couldn't really find an answer. I use the TomTom app on my iPhone and couldn't find out whether this worked with the headunit or not. I've now bought the head unit but I'm waiting for the fitting kit to be delivered.

I'll report back once it's all fitted.

The phone needs to be connected to either 3/4G or Wi-Fi, otherwise it can't get your location. I connected mine today, then put the phone in airplane mode... it just throws up an error asking you to connect to a network.

I’ve fitted the Pioneer unit now and it’s great. Works perfectly.

It does work with the TomTom app. Although it doesn’t display on the Pioneer screen, the audio does work through it. So we will either just put the phone in the glovebox and just listen to the audible instructions, or we’ll get a Brodit mount and mount the phone next to the stereo. It’s good that you can use Spotify or iPod on the Pioneer and use TomTom on the phone display.

One thing we have noticed, and I don’t know if it’s how I’ve installed it, or it’s just what they do, but when you change the display on the highline display, it also changes the song track. Rather annoying. So if we want to cycle through the trip features (MPG, average speed etc...) then it changes the song track too. Have I installed it incorrectly?

I used the Autoleads steering wheel adapter from Halfords. Should I have bought the Connects2 adapter?

Considering this as an option to save me from the complicated misery and cost of an Rns510 system with Bluetooth.  Do the MFSW controls work with the unit?

Bump.

Also interested in whether you can utilise the MFSW controls with this. And what sat nav apps work well with it?

I plugged my iPhone 6+ in one of these at the weekend at halfords, I was pretty impressed, it was behind a glass panel so I couldn't have a proper play, but I like the fact maps shows up on the unit, as does Spotify, my two deal breakers, only trouble I see is when people call you while you're trying to use the sat nav, I imagine it'll cut the map like in my avh x3500. That's annoying.

I just had one of these fitted last week and very happy with it! You have to buy an adaptor to enable the steering wheel controls. The volume control works, can't recall using the up/down buttons on the RHS of the steering wheel!

Looks very neat! Is the sound a huge improvement? I've read the OE unit holds back the speakers a fair bit.

OK it's bonehead question time, so apologies if I come across as an idiot... but I just don't know the answer.

This is the car I'm picking up on Friday, 2007 2.0 GT TDI   (yay)

I've decided to install the Pioneer SPH-DA120 and have a couple of questions:

1) From that pic is it possible to know which install kit I need? IE the C2CTKVW01 or C2CTKVW01 Twin aerial. Is it in fact even the right kit?
2) I see from the description on the RoadRadio website that the installation kit comes with 'Canbus for steering wheel control'. I don't appear to have any buttons on the steering wheel, so do I need that part at all?

I'm actually quite good with electronics, but just never really dabbled with car stuff.  Any pointers would be great. Thanks.

Oh yeah....  I got £50 in Halfords vouchers for xmas. So with those and the £50 off the stereo, it all came to about £270!

Anyone want an RNS510 'Q' for £250?

Very interested in this setup.

I had the original AppRadio (still have sitting somewhere actually) and found it beautiful. Lovely screen and the sounds was great (typical for a Pioneer headunit).

My question is, if I pickup everything from Halfords, will it allow me to use MFSW buttons? Or will I need to go elsewhere for that adaptor? The reason I ask is that a mate works in Halfords and might be able to look after me.

It's possibly supplied with a usb socket lead that you'd run from the rear of the unit into the glove box. Then plug a lightning cable into that, it'll charge the phone, yes.

Hi everyone! I just registered on this forum for this specific topic.

Could someone please tell me what kind of functionality do you get in the steering wheel buttons? And what kind of information is displayed on the MFA+?

I have a RCD500 installed and a very old, nokia bluetooth adapter just below the passenger's seat. Do I need to remove or to upgrade the bluetooth device I have installed?

I've just mentioned this unit in another topic...

I'm thinking about getting one and have an Android phone...

I can't find any details specifying whether maps from an android will work as a sat nav? Whether the phone needs constant 3/4G connection? whether you can use a pre-loaded maps app on the phone that will work on the head unit?  Can you input from the headunit, or does it have to go through your phone?  I'm surpised none of the details on Pioneer's own website offer an clues to these questions!

Just installed this in my GTi. Used the fitting kit from Dynamic Sounds.

I also have a MFSW and can confirm the with the kit from Dynamic Sounds, I have the following functionality:

Volume controls work
Star button is almost a mute button
Phone button seems to pause music
Ok button seems to change modes on the unit
Arrow buttons skip tracks

The MFD ( I have a high line MFD) only displays the word "Audio" though which is a bit disappointing, but I wasn't expecting much functionality there to be honest.

More functionality on the wheel that I thought I'd get so pretty pleased.

Not pleased with the facia however.

It's mottled plastic rather than smooth, fits well though. So just need to find a facia that matches the sash and I'm a happy bunny.

I also added USB sockets in the blanks next to the ESP and tire pressure buttons, but the unit only reads my iPhone as an iPod and won't activate CarPlay, it has to be a genuine apple cable direct from the unit it would seem.

I'll post some photos up later today

Unfortunately, I've yet to figure out how to get the USB sockets to accept my iPhone. The CarPlay device has to be connected to USB1 on the back of the unit, and it has to be a genuine apple cable, so I need to figure out how to get a genuine apple cable to the usb socket on the dash now.

At the minute, I have a cable sticking out of the dash next to the unit near my phone holder, looks a bit untidy, but works.
