Title: The dreaded wing rust
Post by: GTIdanman on July 22, 2015, 07:56:43 pm
i have recently noticed the rust on my 2 front wings. I have been I talks with VW and  it seems as though they are trying to wriggle out of doing it under warranty. So I was just wandering if anybody had any tips as to any products I could use to slow the rust until VW pull there finger out or until I have enough cash to get robbed at the local body shop. I don't want it getting to bad and have to replace the wings. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

mine have just started on the inner lip. I chipped of the loose material, treated with kur rust and touched in. Hopefully it will slow it down a bit.

There's Kurust that turns the rust blue which should be fine, however I'd be careful not to go OTT with what you use to cover it (paints etc.) as they need to scan the area, and if they deem it's been repaired before then they will say that the warranty/guarantee is void, esp. if they are trying to find a way out. :happy2:

Pertinent point this. VW will use a micrometer to measure the paint depth. Anything outside factory tolerance will make a warranty claim much harder.

There is a PDF going round detailing the problem, print this off and take it with you and tell them to sort it or you will contact VW HQ, failing that go to another dealer?

VW Leicester couldn't have been more helpful

Wow. Thanks for the info guys. The PDF will definitely help. If I have no response off them soon I shall be taking the PDF in with me to see them. It seems weather it's  Diesel or Petrol or even if it has been repaird before you should still be able to claim something. It also appears to be easier to make a claim if both OS and NS have rusted as this helps prove it's not the fault of the current ot previous owners.

I have read a lot a good stories on this and also some bad but I can only try.
I had a quoat from my local independent body shop of £416 to repair both wings (OUCH) so I'm hoping I get lucky.

Wish me luck.
Will keep you updated on how I get on!
