Just thought this would be fun and informative to anyone thinking of buying a gti.
My commute to work.
Half a mile on A road.
Then 2 mile on dual carriageway.
Then 2 mile on motorway.
Then 2 mile on A road.
My average mpg in the morning was. 37 mpg.
I know different conditions / roads will give different results.
I was just curios to see what other guys were getting.
-
Had 44.6 mpg door to door Leicester to Nottingham Ikea, 70mph on the motorway, amazing for a 2.0T
-
Easily done if driven economically. I managed an indicated 46.9 on a 13 mile motorway journey (taken at a very steady 60mph though)
My tank average is 22mpg..... :driver:
-
If I averaged mid 30s, I would question why I even own a GTI!
Think my ED30 averages low 20s, I never look. Not what I bought the car for

i agree, my Ed30 drinks fuel like it is going out of fashion but I get so much fun out of using the fuel that quick :happy2:
-
I get 42-45 MPG when driving like I stole it :driver: but then again mine is a TDI :P
-
I average mid 30's. I like a bit of economy. It's only a breathed on family hatchback at the end of the day. If I didn't care at all about mpg I wouldn't have a 4 pot in the engine bay.
-
I only ever once got less than 400 miles to a tank on my GTI
I'm getting 720+ on my Scirocco now. And running 14s 1/4 miles.
#dieselpowa
-
My best over 300 miles was 41.3MPG I was amazed but I was driving with ecomony in mind.
Round town I get about 25-30MPG and if thrashing this will go to high teens!
I have never known such a car with varied economy. Drive economically and it will reward you greatly, drive like a lunatic and it drinks fuel like an alcoholic!
-
I recently got 44.1. I didn't enjoy it though! :driver:
Dave
-
I got 19.6mpg on a 28 mile drive yesterday, no traffic :driver:
-
Can I? No....
:signLOL:
-
I wish I could get back my ED30 MPG
-
Drove to Birmingham and back - got about 36mpg average doing 90mph or just over :P
-
Had around 45mpg many of times, normally on a 20 mile trip sticking to 60 and just very light throttle coming out of one or two 30 zones in the right gear.
Modern petrols can be great if you want them to be, and 45mpg from a 2.0 turbo hot hatch is crazy. Couldn't pay me to have a mordern diesel
Normally it was around 27-33mpg when pressing on In my gti, I dont really clock my mpg as that's not what I bought it for just sometimes check to be curious but it's good to know if you needed to save some penny's etc you can.

-
Not a chance happily!  :driver:
-
Did a longish trip the other and just crossed over 400 miles, with 1/8th of a tank left. Will post up final result!
-
@david25 (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3234) How did you get 404 miles out of tank? Best I have done is 370 miles and I was bored stiff!!
I tried getting the best mileage I could when I first got the GTI, then got bored and was much happier with my 31 mpg on motorways at 90 I mean 70
-
I'm currently at about 280 miles with about a third of my tank left... I'm not sure if I'll use my GTI much since it's for sale, but if I do, I accept your challenge.
-
LOL The point of this thread was to help out guys that are in a similar position to me before i bought my gti.
I am 41 with 3 kids and have had loads of high performance diesels.
I wanted something quick but didn't want to buy a golf gti then find out i was going to get
spanked on the mpg. I debated getting the 170 tdi.
But in the end i plumpted for the golf gti. and 3 months on i know it was the right decision.
If u are having a bad pay week u can take it easy and save the fuel. If your having
a good week u can give it the nuts.
I know this will be an alien concept to some younger drivers with more free cash.
Lol god i loved them days.

Poor bugger
:P How so? If I'm relatively sensible it'll be 50+, sure I could push 60's if I was that bothered!
-
I did 400 miles and still had just under 1/4 tank in my old K03 GTI. Cheshire to Scottish highlands, mild weather, very steady driving. Just over 40mpg :happy2:
My Ed30 managed a flukey 46.7mpg on 95RON over 25 miles 2nd day of ownership

On a serious note I have a 2008 Gti and wife has a 2008 Gt tdi so best of both worlds for us fortunately

Ah! Haha, I did wonder if that's what you meant! :ashamed:
I'd like a GTI or an .:R but I tend to do a fair amount of miles these days, my TDI isn't that slow though :driver: :signLOL:

Haha yeah quite a decline majority of the journey
Usually struggle to see 28mpg on the commute home amongst the rush hour rat race :driver:
Do quite often see 40mpg on decent motorway runs if kept at 80mph or less (430 miles on a tank) :happy2:
-

For that tank
- Only 5% town driving
- Half the trips were very early morning
- New spark plugs, PVC and diverter
- Super unleaded
- Correct tyre pressures
- Only 17" wheels the standard ones are about 1Kg lighter compared to Monza Shadows
- Bluemotion undertray
-
Iirc my best was around 64 mpg on a late night run back from work (40 mile trip no motorways) but in day to day scenarios I tend to see 48 to 54 mpg to work n back.
My previous car a Chevrolet SUV was doing about 30 to the gal, that just about crippled me so it had to go, then I found the little beauty below. It says its a 140 GTs, but I'm not sure if its not been played with if you get me :happy2:
I'd love a fully kitted out GTD but unless I get a company car or a mahoooosive pay rise that'll continue to be a pipe dream.
-
I get low 20's from Ed30 stage 2+ but mpg Does not bother me in the slightest with 360 horses I'm not going to get good fueling.
-
Ive had 46 and 13 all from the 2+ Mistress. Have a guess which was boring as f*ck and which wasn't. Worth a few quid extra in fuel IMHO.
Buy a diesel if you are bothered about such things.
:happy2:

:happy2:
Don't think the point is about saving fuel mate
Think its more about what the great Mk5 Gti is capable of if needed
Again all part of the GTI's all round appeal or as Clarkson said all things to all men
I personally quite often have my 1 year old daughter in back of car with me so that's when the better mpg is quite rewarding on a booring reserved drive
I own/drive a Gti because it's a great car not because I like to hoon it round everywhere! Hence why after 13 years driving ive still got a clean licence and never been involved in any accidents (touch wood) :driver:
-
^^^ Very true.
OP's original question/post title answered in word 3 of my post, what's the probelm with that? How I choose to expand and pontificate futher is up to me.
:happy2:
-
My record fuel economy is 44.0 mpg on V Power driving 40-50mph on A roads. Standard is 20-30 mpg around towns, 35-40 on motorways depending on speed but lower in winter.

Was going to get a picture but forgot but after reading this topic last week I thought I would check what MPG i was getting to work.
I drive around 24 miles on mainly A roads and 50 mile and hour limit so with roundabout and so forth I am probably averaging around 30ish miles an hour but do accelarate hard away from lights etc.
When checked this morning i was getting 36.6mpg :happy2:
-

720+.... WTAF..! I'm in the wrong car...... :congrats:
-
Seriously the tdi guys can try convince themselves otherwise with maps and big torque figures along with mpg etc but it still never be a Gti, never drive or sound like a Gti
Gearbox and drivability in my Gti compared to wifes tdi is simply in a different league, so smooth and driveable, 6th gear 30mph foot down and your off, 4th gear 20mph foot down and your off to 120mph thats 100mph range in one gear  :driver:
-
Matthewsimone uve summed up what i think to the tee.
It pulls away in every gear superbly. love it

Indeed mate
With driving both regularly I really do get a good comparison of the 2
Gt tdi is superb for lots of reasons but the Gti is just that little bit more special particularly when you have had a stressed day

Better not go down that road. Diesel can be smooth and have long gears. Bluemotion's 5th gear is longer than GTI's 6th gear.
If you upgrade your wife's TDI it can also be pleasant to drive. You won't have the same exhaust note but you get the mpg.
Performance wise Jay's Scirocco is better than any stock GTI but it's easier for a GTI to improve. He now has a bit of the best of both worlds.
-
I've had and driven a fair share of fast diesels in the past and although they are great for long journeys, I feel that is the only thing going for them.
Most 4 cylinder diesels sound like white vans with no character at all and the small powerband is frustrating when you are trying to make quick progress. Although a DSG gearbox in a diesel makes a lot of sense.
If I was doing 20000+ miles a year I would get a diesel but anything lower and I would definately be sticking with a petrol.
I would even have an R32 over a GTI if I could afford the added expense but I'm a thoroughbred petrolhead afterall :happy2:
-
I Too love R32's but love boost more oh and the famous Gti badge :pomppomp:
-
My diesel lump needed a remap to have a wider powerband. Stock maps don't really push the engine at higher RPM. After fitting a bigger turbo and removing the DPF its exhaust note became more throaty and sporty.
I know it's nothing compared with my GTI and its BCS Powervalve system but it's better than the stock sound.
In my country diesel costs 1,22 €/L, while petrol 98 RON costs 1,68 €/L. It's easy to prefer using diesel on a daily basis.
My GTI is more of my car toy and for short drives when the diesel isn't available. :driver:
-
Best I've managed is 42.3mpg on a journey to work. That's 4 miles in 30 zone and 26 miles on the motorway.
-
Got an average of 74.2mpg on a run in a mk5 tdi last week!
But get an average of 30 ish in my edition 30. :-)

Yes, of course. It's hard to get that mpg with a petrol engine.

My record is 56 mpg with a Polo 9n 1.2. Really boring trips I did with that car...
-
As i said earlier, i've managed this, over the shown distance on my way to a mate's garage for MOT. Only done this once as a test - never again! (Yaaaawn!!!) Not all motorway driving either, last 3 miles were A roads and country lanes.

My car is a 1.4 tsi petrol :booty: and on the work run I don't drive with any spirit what so ever! On the way home from work however I usually hit 30mpg :)

You and your twin charged engines! You do the almost impossible of being able of doing great mileage and good power output. Really good consumption. :happy2:
You fooled me because you don't have a boost needle like I would expect from a TSI. :ashamed:
