After months and months of looking for a good Edition 30 with low miles, all the spec etc i wanted, i started looking at Mk6 GTis realising that for not much more money i could get a much more modern, nicer car.
As standard theyre specced better than a Mk5 so options wise i only really wanted Xenons. Obviously decent mileage, mint condition, FSH etc!
Came across this Candy White one and had bought it within a few days.
Its a 2010 with just 31000 miles, Full VW Service History and 1 Previous owner.
It has optional Xenons, touch screen media 3 and also full heated leather interior.
Came with some aftermarket extras recently fitted including full BCS turbo back system, Revo intake, KW Coilovers, WALK kit, genuine LED tailights, Genuine LED number plate lights, Anthracite Monzas, black wrapped roof, black painted mirrors and gloss black badges.
Here it is when i bought it;

Thats as far as its got so far... Will update as anything changes or i take pics. I havent even really used it yet. Its my Sunday car that i'll be keeping good, and dry if possible. :)
Im hunting high and low for 19" CKs as thats what i really want for it, but im struggling.
Other than that i will just use and enjoy it, if i keep it until next year i will go stage 3- K04, intercooler and uprated clutch. Then itll be the power i was after and in a nicer car!

Great buy! Looks really well sorted! :congrats:

Looking forward to keeping an eye on this!
How do you find the BCS? Is it the powervalve version?
Also the Revo intake? Do you like it? :happy2:
-
Nice ! That looks sweet !!
I was looking at mk6's but decided to spend a bit less money on a mk5.
-
Thanks for comments.
BCS isnt powervalve, its nice and subtle when driving normally and then has a pretty serious bark when you give it some.
Revo intake seems ok, cant hear much noise off it because of exhaust noise when wide open!

Looks like a great project - must admit, it looks so much better without the black roof. I think that mod has been done to death...
Enjoy your new car - look forward to future updates!
-
Looking good mate, although I must admit personally I still prefer the MK5 shape. Look forward to seeing more work done to this though, I imagine you'll need some new brakes soon.
-
Thanks. Yeh probably because every Corsa on the road has a black roof.
Dont get me wrong, i love a cool Mk5 but if you put one alongside a Mk6 they do look dated now.
Hopefully use it at some point this weekend!

Tbh, your car is very similar spec to an Ed35 with the black wing mirrors, lights, interior.
Do you know if your exhaust tips ar e@ 15 or 35 degrees? :ashamed:
-
Yeh your right, doesnt look any different now really.
Hmm id say they are more than 15 degrees so must be 35. I have new BCS polished tips if you are interested..

Thanks, all i really want is 19" CKs and stage 3 (K04) power. Shame everything i need now isnt cheap!
Not really in a rush as i dont want to spend thousands in one go, but im impatient. :)
After a K04 to have modified to fit TSI, and then i'll need to buy a Helix organic clutch.
Hopefully off VrsAlex if he does a good price.
Might take it for mapping at R-Tech or the like once done but thats a trek for me!

I do mate, 18x8 though - teenier but I really think they look well on the 8P3 A3 like mine.
19" CK's will look an absolute treat on yours  :happy2: Perhaps a nice grey or anthracite?

Thanks Chris, theres pints involved in sourcing me a set. ;)
Thanks Michael, appreciate it. I thought R-Tech was the VAG place for custom maps? Where would you recommend then?
Nice one Pete, ive always loved CKs so im adamant its going to get a set. 19s just look awesome. There was an 18" set just on Ebay but i resisted as i want 19s. It would look good Anthracite but also thought Silver would look really clean..

Mine are in Audi Titanium grey (the OEM Black Edition colour) with a gloss lacquer (I wanted a matte lacquer but that's another story... ). They probably wouldn't look that great without a drop but, hey. You did the right thing, 19"s will certainly work for you :congrats:

So, due to the fact the TSI has a very common problem with the timing chain tensioner ratchet failing and near on destroying the engine when it does- i thought it was a must to take preventative action to stop this from being a possibility!
New revised tensioner purchased from VW, which now cant fail like the old ratchet style ones could and did!
Went about fitting it tonight.
Old vs New Style;
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F08%2F12%2Fcacfc600246bfb9332804122d9e24c38.jpg&hash=39f69c45f7e76072aaa0bb8d697784413eaafc4a)
New tensioner fitted;

Now stuck until i get new lower chain cover ordered from VW as it needed some prying off so not happy putting that back on.

So it all got built back up with the good piece of mind i dont need to worry about tensioner failure!
Went about fitting my stage 2 Airtec intercooler as first step in the next tuning phase!

Will need to get the compressor housing modified to fit TSI engine next week.
Ive ordered a Forge boost pipe kit to get rid of the pancake pipes, and a Unitronic diverter valve relocation kit from the US.
I'll need to get them fitted, then an uprated clutch. Then itll be time to fit K04 and sort out mapping!
-
Hi mate im not able to get any usable photos to help unfortunately. but do remember to block of the PCV port on the K04 as the TSi does not use it
-
Great work there mate, nice to see you've got straight to the chain issue - I kinda of thought VW should've done a recall on the TSI seeing as they do such a good job at lunching the engine.
Can't wait to see what figures you make, I've got a feeling you're going to have more PWR/TRQ, pund for pund than a TFSI with K04... time will tell :happy2:  :popcornsoda:
-
No worries Michael, was just hoping to get an idea what you've done.
Yeh ill make up a simple blank plate for the pcv port.
Yeh Scotty, i cant believe that VW havent made a recall, its surely cost more with the amount of engines theyve had to replace under warranty than it would have to replace the tensioners!
Im hoping for good power as the TSI generally makes better power due to being a better flowing engine, plus ive went with a good intercooler and getting rid of the pancake pipes, and a custom map!
Kind of thought of water methanol too.. Hmmm

Hopefully found a photo of the K04 bolted to the TSI block with the outlet modified. You will love it when you drive it with the k04 i need to change the PCV on mine as its now shagged

Front end is looking lovely Gaz :happy2:
I hope the IC and hoses give you noticeable gains :driver:
-
Thanks chaps, i do like the look of the Mk6 a lot!
Been buying bits and cutting sh1t for the K04 conversion.
Bought Forge boost pipe kit to get rid of the restrictive pancake pipes and so i can fit a standard fitment silicone hose between turbo outlet and turbo outlet pipe.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.tapatalk-cdn.com%2F15%2F08%2F21%2Fbe43784ffa4bea994050a8222edd4c43.jpg&hash=49f57ad76f9e9075791b577384a47798b34ce605)
Bought some other random silicone hoses so i have a selection when it comes to fitting to the turbo, and an alloy pipe to cut up to have welded to turbo outlet as silencer needs removed for fitting to the TSI.
Silencer cut off and alloy pipe cut to be welded on

Thanks chaps. With the CKs im hoping im totally happy with the look of it. Might need to adjust the coilovers to suit but will see.
I dont think theres much point spending all that money to upgrade the K04, if it makes 360bhp+ which they can i will be happy, theyre quick cars at that power and i will be happy there. :)

Enjoyed reading your thread and noticed you've done the tensioner mod but If your engine code is the CCZB I would be looking at changing this 27 item

This is a bit extra info
http://www.autoserviceprofessional.com/article/93400/noisy-audi-chain
It's becoming a common problem and an expensive repair when it fails. However, a simple enough job if caught early but a real chew if the gauze breaks free giving G40 fault code and a nasty knocking at 2000rpm.
-
I have suffered the indignity of this failure and the bill attached to it
-
I have suffered the indignity of this failure and the bill attached to Ithaca
The cheap or expensive one?
-
My car is about 1 year newer than the effected engines but i'll make sure i double check to be sure. As per tensioner, id rather spend £100 now than risk £1000+ later!
Michael, so youve been bitten by both? Sure you said you had a failed tensioner too!?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
I had luckily just the failed tensioner. But was a whole new engine
-
If you still have a rattle after the tensioner job has been done when cold get the bridge bearing replaced or you'll end up with a new cylinder head and cams!
-
I never had a rattle before, i just changed it as a precaution.
Thanks anyway.

Today i got the K04 compressor housing back with the new outlet welded to a great standard thanks to Scott at Magma Fabrications! He also made me a wee blank plate for the PCV outlet i wont use on the compressor housing.

Had to change my tyres from the Goodyears back to the Falkens as the rim protector was so huge on the Goodyears that it fouled the rear arch very slightly when loaded up. Although both 225, the Goodyear was 10mm wider! How stupid.

Falkens are pretty good tyres IMO they don't have the grip of Goodyear or Michelin etc but they are still pretty good
I don't buy them for the performance tho I buy them for the way they stretch so if you like to push your car then get a get something better

Ok, so now she is lifty i thought id best get some big stoppers.
We all know that bigger is better, so i bought myself a set of Porsche Cayenne 18z 6 pots.
I could have bought a refurbed set at £550 but i got a set for £340 needing refurbed, and it doesnt cost £210 to refurb them- so i bought them and stuff to rebuild em.
As bought;

Wanted to have the Brembo stickers fitted properly and before lacquering, so went down to Fife Powder Coating after they were coated red to fit stickers, before powder lacquering.

So, 3mm hubcentric spacers ordered and some Mk4 R32 front braided hoses which are a direct fit into caliper.
Will order some discs and pads at the start of the week and hopefully have the setup fitted by next weekend.

Ended up behind my cousin in his Lamborghini Hurracan, had a little bit of sport but from low speed so in second gear i just have masses of wheelspin, its a 3rd gear onwards car so i was frustrated! The Hurracan is 4wd and 610bhp so is a proper super car! Wish i had the chance to give him a bit of a shock! :)

See, I'm an Impreza fan myself, but I certainly wouldn't turn down an Evo VI TM Edition! Kind of feel that once I finish off the V5 and shift the R32, I may well break my 8 year VW Golf spell and get into JDM a little bit.
The Golf R will stay of course... :)
-
Ive always wanted an Evo 8 as long as i remember, i looked at them before but was put off by the rust underneath the first one i looked at. Now ive seen one that someone as OCD as me is selling and it looks perfect.
If the Golf sells, its sells and ill see what happens. A car isnt a daily for me, its just a toy!

Oil changing OCD- 3 changes in 1000 miles..

Yeah, you're going a bit overboard with the oil change, but I guess you must have a good reason to do it, right?
For me 5L of that oil costs 30 €, while 5L of Millers Oils CFS 5w40 NT Nanodrive costs 88 €.
Have you thought about trying Millers Oils Nanodrive?
-
Yeh mate it wasnt for no reason! One was when i done chain tensioner, one was when i done turbo and this time im changing to Shell Helix as i cant get the Gulf oil i was previously using.
I use the Shell Helix Ultra ECT because it has the specific VW 504 approval. I bought enough to do another change too, aswell as 2x 1L bottles for top-ups because the Forge catch can system slowly fills with oil and therefore i need to top the engine oil back up every so often!
The Shell Helix Ultra costs £43.50 for 5L here.

That oil there is 2x the price it's sold here in the cheapest store. :surprised:
At least you do it yourself. :happy2:

Was out and done a few hundred miles today, the wild power band from 4k rpm upwards with the APR map still massively impresses me, its nothing short of wild!
It either makes me laugh out loud or have a good old smile on my face, and Im not easily impressed by cars at all! :)
Seemed to see a few Mk6 about too, up the North of Scotland. Including a guy driving his nice GTD with some spirit, much to my entertainment!
Thought Id take some proper pictures of it since i dont actually have any proper pictures!

The Golf got treated in a different kind of way tonight!
A heater and thermometer from good old Screwfix to make sure its kept warm and dry in the garage!

Was getting annoyed with water off the car after a wash not drying out in the garage now its a bit colder. Hate dampness! Now the heater comes on when it gets cooler, help keep it dry and warm!
It got a wee wash too.

Detailing level +1 for the climactic drying in garage... That's dedication.
