Ive done 77000 miles in my edition 30 and never needed any tools other than those to take  wheel off.

Usually the only tool in my car is me!  :popcornsoda:

I have a small tool bag in my boot at all times, always have in all my cars
Just a few basic bits and bobs
Fortunately I've only ever had to use them on other people's cars

I used to have quite a complete toolkit in a highly modified Volvo S40 T4 I used to own... Everything from split pins to axle stands! It got a bit silly... And highly strung cars are not practical!

Leave all your tools at home and make sure you have full breakdown cover.

I always have basic tools in the car however I don't recall ever using them for a breakdown.

You might want to consider taking a few spare fuses and bulbs. It's not nice getting pulled over for a brake light failure   :sad1:

Did i quick once over on the car. One of the CV boot clips is leaking tried to tighten it up but the clip is mangled. Decided to take the clip off. If i get a new clip can i undo it and put it on or will i have to remove the hub?

This is urgent as we set off tomorrow.

If you have an undercarpet boot storage compartment, you can get basic tools in there like screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, gas soldering iron and even a emergency tyre repair kit thingy

I did manage to slip a new clip on. Got a much better seal this time.

I can't be bothered to mess about with tools not much room with my boot build and all the luggage.

Always had a litre of oil in any car I drive and tools for changing a wheel. Other than that, good break down cover and less worrying are my tips.

Is the gaiter split?  You may get away with a bike inner tube cut correctly and then strapped down with a decent zip tie... Purely as a temp measure though, Its amazing how fecked the joint can get from a small amount of grit.

Regarding tools, I too thought there was a higher basic level in Europe.. High Vis, warning triangle... Breathalyser!?  Check here:http://shop.theaa.com/store/advice-on-driving-in-europe?ito=86411

Defo a litre of oil, and basic toolset... Road side assistance with towing for sure.

Check tyre pressure for load you're carrying, if no xenons, alter manual height.... Blah blah:) have a great trip!

The gaiter is new (a few months) The larger clip did not crimp nicely when i tried to crimp it more the pliers would just slide off. Got a good crimp this time.

I have High Vis for all passengers, warning triangle, the regular vw tools and a vw lights and fuse set.
No Breathalyser. lol

I have breakdown cover from my insurance company no idea what it covers. Will pop a litre of millers nd in the boot.

Sounds like you are taking the essentials - I'd add Duct tape, zip ties, WD40. These will mend absolutely everything, apparently...!!

Seriously - I have a basic tool set with torx bolts, plus - hi-vis vests, first-aid kit, oil, coolant, tyre inflator, tyre weld, towing rope, zip ties, WD40, duct tape, fire extinguisher - in the back of mine. Overkill for sure, but might help with any small issues...
Also, breakdown cover - just in case of something serious...!

Thank for all the suggestions guys. It was a nice drive down the car performed well. Took a bit longer than expected 5 1/2 hours. I think i may have got a speeding ticket don't think  they can put points on a UK license though.

I have lost about 4mm of oil.

Made it back in one piece 1200 km in total. The cars in a bit of a state will give her a good clean this week. If we go away for more than 5 days i will need a trailer and roof rack.

Cool, glad it went well.  That's a decent distance with kids in toe, think I'd add some Chloroform in the rear vents for that duration. :innocent:
